Jemima or Juliet

VintageGirl89 · 10/07/2020 21:28

We struggled for so long for girls names and couldn't find anything we loved, then suddenly we heard Jemima and it was perfect!
However, we have since fallen in love with Juliet too and can't decided between the two. So......

Which would you choose and why?
Jemima Isabel or
Juliet Isabella

Thank you Smile

I have a Juliet and she's never been a Jules, or an Etta. You can control the use of nicknames and it's not such an obvious one (or shortening one) that people immediately go for it.

It's also not a diminutive of Julia, as, um, k'tan

LBOCS2 · 11/07/2020 10:59

It's not shorter than Julia? And also they're completely different names.

LotusClover · 11/07/2020 11:03

Juliet is timeless and beautiful. Jules would be the obvious shortening (which I also love) but I knew a Juliet who went by Lettie and one who simply went by Juliet. It's a gorgeous name.

Jemima on the other hand, I find very ugly. Frumpy, fussy and makes me think of Jemima Puddleduck. I don't think it goes particularly well with your boys names either - I thought all this when you posted your original thread, but you'd already decided on it so I didn't want to put you off by saying anything.

Juliet wins by a mile for me. Juliet Isabella is lovely.

dicksplash · 11/07/2020 11:03

I love them both. I would have gone for Juliet for my daughter but don't like julie.

LarkDescending · 11/07/2020 12:32

You can’t really go wrong with these lovely choices.

I love Jemima and know two brilliant ones - one a senior lawyer and the other a junior doctor. It does have a particular brand-name association in the US but not elsewhere. I like Jem as a diminutive.

Juliet is also fabulous: Shakespearean, international, timeless and will take her anywhere in life. I don’t like Jules but it isn’t inevitable.

Maybe take both into the delivery room and see which fits?

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2020 12:34

Jemima.
Don't like Jules, or the way people say Julie-ETTE.

daisypond · 11/07/2020 14:12

I know Juliet is longer than Julia, but length isn’t what makes it a diminutive. A suffix can make something a diminutive too, like -et. A pet form, if you like.

Roadrunner550 · 11/07/2020 14:18

I absolutely love the name Jemima, so annoying about the puddleduck because that’s what loads of people think of! Not that she isn’t a lovely puddleduck, would just be annoying for your little girl to be constantly associated with said puddleduck 🙈

Heytheredelilah99 · 11/07/2020 15:06

I love them both. I love Jemima and Mima for short. Juliet is more unusual and really classy. GREAT choices!

DreamMeOffMyFeet · 11/07/2020 15:37

I love Juliet, but prefer the spelling Juliette.
It's actually my sisters name (she is known as Juliette or Julie, never Jules) but I would quite like to use it as a middle name if I ever have a girl.
Although Jemima is nice, I only hear puddle duck afterwards. Confused

villamariavintrapp · 11/07/2020 15:44

The racist connotations put me off jemima completely. But I prefer Juliet as a name anyway. Or Julia.

steppemum · 11/07/2020 15:47

Jemima = duck
Jemima= rag doll on playschool

horrible name

Juliet, very pretty and classic, also suits grown woman

Woodlandtree · 11/07/2020 15:49

Juliet by a long way

Flappingflamingo · 11/07/2020 16:09

I would stick with Jemima Isabel, it's beautiful

Theforest · 11/07/2020 16:13

Jemima

Imissmoominmama · 11/07/2020 16:18

My daughter is a Jemima- named after Jemima Puddle Duck. I’m a huge Beatrix Potter fan.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 11/07/2020 18:08

Juliet. It's a beautiful name.

pilates · 11/07/2020 18:11

Definitely Jemima and love nn Jem

Gremlinpoop · 11/07/2020 21:03

Jemima is a fantastic name querky and known but rare, lots of nickname potentials ( Mima, Mimi, Mim, Jem, Emi). A duck from a Victorian children's story is hardy a bad association, it just shows its a known classic name.
Juliet is also nice but I just don't like the Julie part and somehow seems more mundane. It might be that Julia, Julie, Juliet are just more common so more familiar to me and associated with an older generation I know quite a few Julia's and Juliet's ( Jules) in their 50's.
You will not go wrong with either but Jemima is my favourite out of these.

PhoenixBuchanan · 12/07/2020 01:23

We considered both of these for DD2. Ended up choosing Jemima. Still absolutely love it. We live in Canada and do get a lot of people who don't know the name, but we get lots of compliments on it. If you choose it do not worry about American connotations. They're not relevant to us and we live much closer to the US than you do!

My advice with names is generally to go for something you've liked for a long time rather than an "upstart" name. I think there is less potential regret that way. But they are both great choices.

Ginandplatonic · 12/07/2020 01:37

I really like them both. All other things being equal I think you should choose Jemima because it’s been your favourite for longer, and because I prefer the most obvious nicknames. (I know a Juliet who gets Ju and a Jemima who gets Mimi...)

KoalasandRabbit · 12/07/2020 01:45

Much prefer Juliet to Jemima though prefer Juliette spelling. I'ld probably do Isabelle after that.

Grufallosfriends · 12/07/2020 08:53

I much prefer Juliet.

Also, often names don't get shortened. I know an adult Juliet. It's so easy to say.

My dd has a 3 syllable name that never gets shortened.

bridgetreilly · 12/07/2020 09:50

I really like Jemima Juliet. JJ for short.

But otherwise I think Juliet Isabel is slightly my preference over Jemima Isabel. I don't like Isabella.

BiscuitLover3679 · 12/07/2020 13:29

Jemima Isabel flows better
