Can I please ask your thoughts on Lauren?

Just that really. My husband and I think it's super adorable but also works for a girl in her teens and as an adult.
I think it's a classic name but am worried others will say it's dated? Any (not too critical) opinions would be great Smile

Lauren is a lovely name. Don’t think it’s dated at all. Two of my best friends are Lauren (30s) and my niece is a Lauren (20). Not as common now but I think that’s a good thing!

Sdoo4 · 11/07/2020 11:19

How about Laurie as an alternative?

HelloDulling · 11/07/2020 11:21

I work in a girls school. We have a fair few through different year groups. It’s a nice name, and doesn’t really shorten, which I like.

Lots of Lauren’s in my class at school. I’m an early 90s baby.

I’m not sure it’s time has come back quite yet.

Hannah was another popular name back then and 100% use it.

I had a Lauren in my class at school - in the late 60s. It was unusual then and I think it’s pretty and quite stylish but it has suffered terribly from 90’s caricaturing.

Names wax and wane. I also knew a Sylvia and a Shirley growing up and their names sat wrongly on 1970s teenagers. I think Lauren now may be similar.

When I grew up every class had Amanda, Susan, Sally, Helen, Jane, Alison, Julia, Fiona, Cheryl. Much as dd every class had: Eleanor, Isabel, Imogen, Rose, Maddie, Alice, etc.

Names are important.

I think from my own perspective it'd be surprising and refreshing to hear a baby born in 2020 called Lauren. Like you say OP there aren't many these days and it's on a massive downward trajectory numbers wise so there'll be far less by the time the 2020 stats are released

The negative is that whilst a baby Lauren born in 2020 is highly likely to be the only one in her class and school, everyone's "uncool" mums and their mum friends will be Lauren. So she may quickly start to feel her name is a dowdy mum name. There was a girl called Susan and boyS called Colin and Phillip at my school in the 80s. Only ones in the school with those names but I felt a bit sorry for them as I associated them so strongly with Middle Aged accountants which seemed very uncool when I was at school (obviously different now I'm an adult and an accountant is a very good job!)

I think @whatsyourflava has got it spot on

From a child/teen's point of view its more 'cool' to have a name that a bit ahead of its time popularity wise than one which was very popular a generation earlier. So Laurens born in the 60s, 70s, 80s were ahead of the curve but a Lauren born in 2020 will be behind the curve

Not such an issue for a name that was never top 10 and therefore less closely associated with any particular generation but Lauren was very popular from around '90 to '00

I love it. I do like Laura and Lara too, but I'd go for Lauren.

foxtiger · 11/07/2020 14:55

I think I slightly prefer Laura (I tend to go for traditional names), but I do like Lauren too. To me it has quite a gentle and elegant feel. I was going to say that it had been around for a lot longer than those 30-somethings everyone's mentioning, and quite the example of Lauren Hutton, but sadly I've just discovered that that's not her real name. I think my mental picture of a Lauren still owes a lot to her though. I definitely don't think it would be ridiculously dated for a baby born now.

Heh1991 · 13/07/2020 01:03

I like it. It doesn’t seem as common these days which I think is a great thing- classic name and yet she’ll probably be the only Lauren in her class!

Charis1503 · 14/07/2020 00:16

Lauren is OK....but how about Laurel?

bottleofbeer · 14/07/2020 21:36

My second son would have been Lauren and I still think it's very pretty but it screams mid to late 90s to me now.

Danniiaddy · 14/07/2020 22:10

It’s very 90s, my cousin’s name and people still mispronounce it as Lore-run...🙄
