Too plain?

very plain, probably OK for a middle name

Discotastic · 15/07/2020 09:08

Classic name, but prefer it to be spelt with a y - Jayne 😊

MaryLisbon · 15/07/2020 14:02

I like it and think of Henry VIII's wife. It's stood the test of time.

passthemustard · 15/07/2020 14:05

Love it. And Mary. And Mary-Jane actually 🤔

KetoIFWinnie · 15/07/2020 14:06

I love it. It's so refreshingly simple in amongst frillier names.

KetoIFWinnie · 15/07/2020 14:07

ps love Jeanie

For some reason, I don't like Joan or jOanie though.

thesunisup · 15/07/2020 14:12

I love it. I know 2 Jaynes, both 30/40+. Years ago I knew a very elderly lady whose name was Jane and it struck me then how beautiful and classical it was.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/07/2020 14:16

I loathe the Jayne spelling. Jane is a great name. I am in my late 50s. There were two Janes in my secondary school year group. It wasn't the commonest name at all. It's not like Linda, Barbara and Jacqueline. Those were very uncommon names before the 20th century whereas Jane has been popular for centuries. A baby born in 2020 would grow up knowing Granny, Great-Aunt, Great-grandmother Jane. Far enough from parents' generation to be OK.

Annebronte · 15/07/2020 14:20

It’s lovely. I do t think plain Jane: Jane was the most beautiful of the Bennett sisters! It’s relatively unusual at the moment too. I’m a teacher and I don’t think I’ve ever taught a Jane.

thesunisup · 15/07/2020 14:21

Really dull and boring and Joan and Jean are equally as bad

I love Jeanne. Jeanne Tripplehorn is so glam

Alongcameacat · 15/07/2020 14:29

Ah don’t mess with it putting unnecessary letters into it. Embrace its simplicity, that is what makes it so lovely.

KetoIFWinnie · 15/07/2020 15:15

I agree, if you add a y, you're not getting it.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 15/07/2020 15:20

I love it and we used it. The proper spelling. It’s classic and simple. Due a comeback for sure!

Destroyedpeople · 15/07/2020 17:00

It's a great name. Good point about historical Janes. It's kind of timeless.
Good name for an adult too.
I am.55 and there was one Jane in my class.
Fashionable names then were..Claire..GillIan. .Deborah. ..

Binkybix · 17/07/2020 05:38

I’m a 40 yo Jane and very rare to meet another of my age, so think it was common the generation above.

I like it. Don’t like the ‘y’ spelling though.

lookoutfor · 17/07/2020 05:57

I think it's lovely, always liked it. Classic but not at all old fashioned.

IntrovertedUnicorn · 17/07/2020 06:28

I like it. I'm a sucker for the old names, and think that, in a world of "you-nique" names, it's actually the classics that stand out.

Pegaroo · 18/07/2020 07:19

Love Jane......favourite book is Jane Eyre, so it’s a win from me.

helly29 · 18/07/2020 07:27

I'm biased as I have a 2 year old Jane, I love it! Not at all common either (only 26 the year she was born). I think it suits both children and adults

Keyperfect · 18/07/2020 07:50

Love it and must be the Jane spelling. Please use it!

BoudicasBoudoir · 18/07/2020 08:01

And I have one of the other 25!

Don’t use it OP. I want it to go on being rare. Grin

helly29 · 18/07/2020 10:43

@BoudicasBoudoir - great taste! I don't think we have to worry though, it's still 1272nd most popular Smile

raindropshateyou · 18/07/2020 10:47

I'm a Jane and I hate it.

Calibrachoa · 19/07/2020 14:01

Such a classic. Catherine is another great Henry VIII wife name.

The3rdWatermelon · 19/07/2020 14:16

I’m a Jane in my early thirties.

At primary school I was the only one, and my secondary school of about 1500 kids had only one other Jane (who coincidentally also shared my middle name!).

As a child I got a lot of ‘plain Jane who lives down a drain’ and I hated my name. I wanted a long name with lots of syllables so I could have a cool nickname. Jane doesn’t lend itself to diminutives or nicknames and I was desperate to have one.

As an adult I really like it. I’m usually the only Jane in a room. If I’m speaking to someone for work on the phone or email I feel like I get treated as though I’m older and more experienced than I really am. People seem to assume a Jane is in her 50s and knows what she’s talking about. I have a friend Janet, the same age as me, who has noticed the same thing. I do get called Jade quite a bit, when people aren’t listening properly.

I’d say Jane is a pretty good name to live with, but it wants a good nickname or a pretty middle name to give it a bit of a boost.
