Isabel, Isobel or Isabella

Which do you prefer and why?

After long discussions, we have these names as our top choice at the minute but unsure of which name and spelling.

I know the name doesn't go great with my surname however baby will only have my surname until we get married so happy to go with it til then.

Thank you all x

I personally prefer Isabelle or Isobel, Isabella just doesn’t roll of the tongue as nicely as the others imo and I’m not super keen on the spelling Isabel.

Ulrikaka · 01/07/2020 23:52

My favourite is Isabelle. Apologies that not even on your list, but I think the spelling is prettier.
Isobel feels Scottish
Isabel sounds made up
Isabella sounds like the name of a million 14 yr old girls.

ThirdOne · 01/07/2020 23:55

I'd go for either Isobel (Scottish spelling) or Isabelle

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2020 00:00

There are so many variations of this name:

Isobel is Scottish
Isabel is Spanish
Isabelle is French
Isabella is Italian

My favourite is the simplest spelling, which to me is Isabel, but I like Isobel too.

Isabelle is to frilly for my taste, as is Isabella.

Welcometotheneighbourhood · 02/07/2020 00:04

My sister is an Isobel. Lovely name choice, but my goodness, she has spent her life spelling it out for people

MrsGilly1 · 02/07/2020 00:22

Isobel X

WhatALump · 02/07/2020 00:23

I prefer Isabel because I have one of those

Buttercup54321 · 02/07/2020 00:36

I know several . Personally prefer Isabella spelling.
Its very popular at the moment.

Beeinthecountry · 02/07/2020 00:46

I prefer Isabella, but they’re lovely names

DramaLlamaMeditation · 02/07/2020 01:41

Isabel is classic, simple and beautiful.

MaitlandGirl · 02/07/2020 01:58

I have an Isabelle and a friend has an Isabella.

What short version will you be happy with? My DD gets Issy, but my friends DD automatically gets Bella (which makes me think of the Tweenies).

blankethog · 02/07/2020 02:06

Isobel or Isabel. Don't love Isabella just because as PP said it will be shortened to Bella which I just don't like

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 02/07/2020 02:09

it doesn't really matter. Whichever you pick people will always spell it the other way. Try not to get hung up on it, or it will drive you bonkers.

MrsAvocet · 02/07/2020 02:31

As a PP said, if you have a name with multiple spellings then many people will spell it "wrong". You can either spend half your life correcting people or just let it roll over you. I suggest the latter.
My DD's name has several legitimate spellings and she gets them all on birthday cards etc, along with the occasional bizarre made up spelling. I thought I'd chosen the most obvious spelling but it seems not.Grin It irritates her a bit that certain members of our extended family still spell her name wrong after 22 years but other than that she doesn't care. The only times I have ever objected was when her teacher in Reception used a different spelling on all her books etc and once it was wrong on an exam certificate. On those occasions I asked for it to be changed.
But generally I think we pick names because we like the sound of them, it doesn't matter so much what they look like. Personally I would go for Isabel or Isobel. Keep it simple. The extra letters in the "elle" and "ella" versions are a bit too fussy for my taste. Nice and straightforward when she's learning to write her name too! Its a good, classic name and all the versions are fine though. Its not like you want to spell it Yzzabeller or something!

ILoveStickers · 02/07/2020 06:32

Isobel for me.

VintageGirl89 · 02/07/2020 07:59

Thank you.
Before posting this I was leaning more towards Isabel to be honest.
Shorter, neater and Spanish inspired too.
I would prefer to use the full name too rather than a shortening and think with Isabel its more likely to happen. As like people say, Isabella will most likely become Bella.

Shortlist now consists of: Isabel Marie, Chloe Marie and Sofia Marie. Not sure which we like best at the minute!

Isabel is my favourite over Isobel and Isabella, but I like Chloe and Sofia better! Isabel and all its variations are so popular now that they're a bit plain and boring. And as others have said, no matter which spelling you choose, the fact that the name has so many legitimate spellings means that she will constantly have her name misspelt.

Thistlegirl4 · 02/07/2020 10:22

I love Isabella it's one of my favourite names. Personally I prefer the flow of it and the ending in a. Isobel doesn't sound as nice, if you compare it to Isabel, it sounds harsher.

PiratePetespajamas · 02/07/2020 10:27

Isobel. I like the “old” Scottishness of it. (I’m not Scottish). I don’t like the “ll” spellings (Isabelle/Bella), they look twee to me. I love Isobel, it was on my shortlist.

user495275 · 02/07/2020 10:30

@Thistlegirl4 but Isabel and Isobel are pronounced exactly the same..? Hmm

I like Isabel best but I really love Chloe too.

CaffiSaliMali · 02/07/2020 10:34

I like Isabel the best, followed by Isabella.

The shortness and simplicity of the Isabel spelling appeals over Isabelle/Ysabelle etc.

A classic example of a name which is so popular because it's nice. It was my favourite name growing up and we had a lovely cat called Isabel, known as Izzy.

Borisplums · 02/07/2020 10:38

We have had all 3 variants in my family for generations & it makes genealogy a fucking nightmare.

I prefer Isobel Smile

Tomorrowsanewday · 02/07/2020 10:41

I like Isabel. It’s an unusual spelling. I like it because it was the name of my late MIL (Bell) who was a MIL in a million.

Thistlegirl4 · 02/07/2020 10:48

Where I am in Scotland you would pronounce the Isabel as Is - a - bel and Isobel as Is - o - bel. There is a difference where I am anyway.

Thistlegirl4 · 02/07/2020 10:49

And Isobel is usually said faster and it all runs together when you say it if that makes sense, whereas Isabel is sounded out more and a bit slower.
