Isabel, Isobel or Isabella

Which do you prefer and why?

After long discussions, we have these names as our top choice at the minute but unsure of which name and spelling.

I know the name doesn't go great with my surname however baby will only have my surname until we get married so happy to go with it til then.

Thank you all x

Isabella.

All very very popular

Iwalkinmyclothing · 02/07/2020 12:21

Isobel.

I have a great auntie Isobel (Scottish family), it would definitely have been on my name list if I had had girls rather than boys.

bridgetreilly · 02/07/2020 12:42

Isabel.

Sojo88 · 02/07/2020 13:11

I know it's not one of the spelling suggestions you gave but personally prefer Isabelle most. Isabel and Isobel look kind of misspelt.

Pemba · 02/07/2020 16:48

They are all lovely. (not helpful). Agree with some pps that Isabelle is a bit frilly, seems to contain unnecessary letters! Unless you have French connections of course.

You could maybe hedge your bets and have Isabella, then use Isabel for short and see how it develops?

People on here always say Isobel is the Scottish version. I always thought that was Ishbel?

I think Ishbel is the anglicised form of Iseabail, which I think is the Scots Gaelic variant of Isabel; hopefully someone who knows much more about Scottish names and Scots Gaelic can confirm or otherwise though :)

xmummy2princesx · 02/07/2020 18:31

Isabella is sooo pretty

thesedaysarescary · 02/07/2020 18:54

I prefer Isabelle or Isabella your spelling isabel like that just looks like a spelling mistake as it's Isobel or Isabelle

Pemba · 02/07/2020 20:25

No it really isn't, thesedays. And try telling that to all the Spanish speaking people of the world! And that's where the name Isabel originates from, all the other versions are variations.

PeraltasWife · 02/07/2020 20:28

Isobel looks the prettiest to me

MaverickDanger · 02/07/2020 20:33

Isobel out of your options, but my favourite version is Ysobel.

123Dancewithme · 02/07/2020 23:41

Isobel

micc · 03/07/2020 12:20

Hello, I'm an Isobel!
Its different, it's more popular than when I grew up but every other Isobel I went to school with spelt it with an A. Only thing is I find people instinctively write Isabel unless I say Isobel with an O! Haha, but I think Isabel does sound a bit more feminine. Weirdly my family is Italian! I think my mum just wanted to be different Haha x

Roasties89 · 03/07/2020 13:08

Isobel. I like that.

My partner's friend has an Isabella and another child called Matilda. It's such a mouthful. Especially when you say both.

autumnkate · 03/07/2020 17:29

Isabel for me! I think Isobel looks like isobar

LarkDescending · 03/07/2020 20:20

Isabel for me.

I love Sofia too.

coco2020 · 04/07/2020 08:56

A vote here for Isobel. Always loved that spelling, I think it looks beautiful

zingally · 05/07/2020 11:59

@LotusClover

Isabel is my favourite over Isobel and Isabella, but I like Chloe and Sofia better! Isabel and all its variations are so popular now that they're a bit plain and boring. And as others have said, no matter which spelling you choose, the fact that the name has so many legitimate spellings means that she will constantly have her name misspelt.
Agree with all of this.

As a primary school teacher, I've seen a million of the different Isabel/la variations. It's a pretty name, but well-overused.

Whereas in 15 years of teaching, I can only bring one Chloe to mind, and only a small number of Sophias (no Sofias!).

foxtiger · 07/07/2020 12:15

Isabel. I'm surprised to see people saying it's unusual, it's the default as far as I'm concerned. I have two problems with Isobel - I can't unsee the word "sob" in the middle and I also think it looks like it should be pronounced like isobar. Isabelle is OK but why complicate things? And Isabella is a bit fancy for my tastes. Worst of all in my opinion is Isobelle which believe it or not I have seen a couple of times - the one spelling that doesn't occur traditionally in any language!

Isabel is classic, strong and feminine.

Isobel I like but prefer the ‘a’ version

Isabelle and Isabella always seem a bit frilly, fluffy and high maintenance.

BrickOgrassie · 07/07/2020 12:27

Isobel

VintageGirl89 · 07/07/2020 12:57

Just to update you if you haven't been following my other threads, she has been named Jemima Isabel ❤

Congratulations and lovely name choice.

TurquoiseDress · 07/07/2020 14:27

I do like all the names and the way they sound, however, for me it would be the constant clarifying of how it's spelled as there are so many variations!
