Having DS2. My dad is called Tony. He has been a big huge support in my life and DS1. Is it too outdated?

I love Antonio nn Tony

I have a Tony, it suits him and nobody has an issue with it. If it makes you happy and all that ☺️

2boysinapod · 02/07/2020 21:38

@Clevererthanyou thats lovely! How old is he if you don't mind me asking?

I am not keen on Anthony, Anton.

2boysinapod - he’s seven now and he is strictly a Tony and not an Anthony or any other name as he will happily tell people who try calling him Anthony 😁 Trust me, when your child gets to school there will be a vast ocean of unusual names in his class and Tony will be borderline dull by comparison...

lottiegarbanzo · 02/07/2020 22:50

I like Antonio. What do you think about Ant?

helpmum2003 · 02/07/2020 22:56

I like it.

Personally would use Anthony then has choice of that or Tony or Ant. Could there be confusion if they have exactly the same name? We used same name as a grandfather but use a different nn.

HemulenHouse · 02/07/2020 22:56

I’d just go for it. No point dancing around it - if he’s meant to be a little Tony, then he’s meant to be a little Tony. There are lots of note acceptable variations of my daughter’s name but I’m so glad we didn’t compromise.

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 02/07/2020 22:57

My Dad was Tony, full name Anthony. I've known another couple of lovely Tonys too in my own generation (born late 1960s). So I like the name but it feels dated. I agree with some others, Anthony has aged better so maybe use that so he/you have a choice.

morefun · 02/07/2020 22:58

I love Tony!

4amWitchingHour · 02/07/2020 23:00

Antonio on the BC - gives him options even if you're going to call him Tony :)

Toilenstripes · 02/07/2020 23:02

Love Anthony with Tony as a nn.

Twixes · 02/07/2020 23:05

I really like it. Anthony on bc and then Tony as a nn.

Maduixa · 02/07/2020 23:22

I like Antonio on the bc and nn Tony (nothing against Anthony, Antony, or Anton except you've said you don't like them). If he doesn't want Tony as an adult and Antonio's too much, there's also Anton as a natural shortening.

DoTheMaccaroni · 03/07/2020 08:16

If it wasn’t for your Dad being named Tony I’d be saying hell no! However I love the idea of your Dads face lighting up Grin

I prefer the idea of Antonio with nn Tony but it’s upto you OP. Do whatever feels more comfortable Smile

MikeUniformMike · 03/07/2020 13:10

Anthony nn Tony is fine.

Antonio if you are not Italian or Spanish is naff.

Anton nn Tony?

Cindie943811A · 03/07/2020 17:20

There is so much more diversity in names nowadays and no one accuses parents of little Luca, Raphael, Carlo, Kai, Stellan etc of being naff because of their lack of foreign blood. Anyway, who is to know outside the family exactly what ethnic origins are in your child’s heritage?
If you like it go for Antonio ( by no means an outlandish name) on bc and nn Tony
Hope your lovely father is thrilled. Good luck

NC4Now · 03/07/2020 17:24

Anton?

golddustwomen · 03/07/2020 17:32

I have a Toni - girl, called after my dad who is Anthony but only ever known by Tony.
Love it OP!
One of those names which is cute and cheeky for a child but also very much suits an adult IMO.

daisypond · 03/07/2020 17:37

But neither cute or cheeky is desirable, so I can’t see why anyone’s would burden a child with them.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/07/2020 17:42

@ThroughThickAndThin01

Outdated.
But maybe due a comeback. I like it.
Letthemysterybe · 03/07/2020 17:57

It sounds outdated to my ears, but it won’t to his contemporaries. I know little Paul’s, Richards, Johns, Jason’s and Malcolms etc and they sounded like middle aged names when I first met them, but they don’t now. And their mates don’t think of their names as any different to the more popular Freddie’s, Arlo’s etc. If you like the name then use it!

2boysinapod · 03/07/2020 18:23

@Cindie943811A My first DS name is German and my name is actually Spanish with no heritage to either.

I do love both names equally. I am leaning towards Tony more as that's his actual full name. I can picture the DS2 being a Tony(pregnancy hormones maybe? Grin)

If you like Tony then go for it. There is a little girl in my granddaughters class (4) called Toni. Her full name is Antonia. I’ve never given a thought to whether I like it or not. She is just Toni. Lovely little girl. Her family are not Italian.

Namechange8471 · 03/07/2020 18:32

What’s your dads full name op?
I’d just name him after your dad, either Tony as full name or nickname.

Makes a change from all the bloody Ezras and Noah’s around here 😂

Fleamaker123 · 03/07/2020 18:39

I would just go for Tony.

@TheGardenFairy
How gorgeous!

Uhtredswoman · 03/07/2020 18:39

Sorry haven't read the whole thread, but how about Tonino as a shortening for Antonio?

I knew a lovely Italian man of that name.... 😍
