Clementine - all the questions!

stardrop87 · 28/06/2020 17:50

We're expecting our first little girl and quite keen on the name Clementine but wondering about a few things...

Pronunciation - would you pronounce it Clementyne or teen?

Nicknames? Which are best?

Middle names - really struggling with middle names that flow nicely.

Any help appreciated! X

Teen!

Flowerpowersy · 28/06/2020 22:05

Clemen tEEn.

Like Josephine, Christine or Evangeline.

Like the fruit!

Flowerpowersy · 28/06/2020 22:05

Mandarine and Clementine are both TEEN.

Tillygetsit · 28/06/2020 23:02

I always said Clement ine like the song but dd has one in her preschool called Clementeen and her nn is Teeny!

VetOnCall · 29/06/2020 03:18

I would pronounce it 'tyne' at the end. I'm not at all keen on Clemmie though, it sounds too much like 'clammy' or 'phlegmy', neither of which are great associations!

caribooshriek · 29/06/2020 03:27

Love Clementine

Edenember · 29/06/2020 03:43

@stardrop87 I would pronounce it -tyne. Quite pretty as a whole but in my neck of the woods clems is local vernacular for balls so that’s all I can think of. I think this is very localised to my region though so not a general problem.

Blursula · 29/06/2020 06:44

I’ve never been sure on tyne or teen but both are nice. I like the full length version but can’t stand Clemmy as it just sounds like Clammy. Emmy could be a much nicer alternative perhaps

stardrop87 · 29/06/2020 07:33

I think I like Clemmie more than Clementine but I like that she would have options. I think Clemmie suits a child more whereas Clementine sounds more grown up...

I know one which pronounces Tyne. Nickname is Clemmie. Lovely name. I tend to think middle names should be family names. So grandparents or parents names or middle names. Or aunts/uncles (the child's) names or even someone significant to you, real or literary.

stardrop87 · 29/06/2020 10:29

I think it needs a short middle name as our surname is quite long too...

My friend has a daughter called Clementine and insists it is pronounced "teen", like in French. She says the song "oh my darling Clementine" popularized the wrong pronunciation ("tyne"). It seems people pronounce it both ways, which annoys her!

I think it's a nice name and Clem and Clemmie are both good diminutives.

Namechange8471 · 29/06/2020 10:41

I’d pronounce it clemenTYNE.

Any other names you like op?

stardrop87 · 29/06/2020 10:47

I also like;

Millie
Evie
Gracie

Any thoughts on these or any suggestions of other names I might like always appreciated! X

Those are lovely names op. Similar I’d say:

Rose
Rosie
Willow
Evelyn
Odette
Imogen
Otillie
Grace
Luna
Lola
Jasmine
Eva
Lori
Sophie
Heidi
Maddie
Hallie
Hayley
Katie
Lucy
Lucia
Piper

LilacSloth · 29/06/2020 11:00

I would pronounce it TYNE. Like the nicknames Clemmie or Clem. I think Joy would be a lovely middle name.

Other suggestions:
Madeleine
Genevieve (could use Evie as a nickname)
Valentina

daisypond · 29/06/2020 11:04

Clementine is much nicer than either Millie,
Evie or Gracie. They are too cutesy by far.

Minty82 · 29/06/2020 11:05

I think it’s usually -tyne in the US and -teen in the UK. Certainly all the British Clementines I’ve known have been -teens.

stardrop87 · 29/06/2020 11:08

@daisypond I know what you mean...I think the other options are safer too.

I've seen lots of other posters say how they love the name Clementine but wouldn't be brave enough to use it which I suppose is how I feel but then I think is it really such an out there name??

OP posts:
daisypond · 29/06/2020 11:34

I don’t think Clementine is out there at all. I think Florence has a similar feel.

HelmutShmacker · 29/06/2020 11:36

I would pronounce it Clemen-Tyne

stardrop87 · 29/06/2020 13:05

I didn't think it was that out there but there certainly seems to be some nervousness over using it over more safe options...

OP posts:
Whatsyourflava · 29/06/2020 13:48

In my opinion, Clementine would be a brave choice 10 years ago but it's not now @stardrop87 it's much more mainstream, I can see it reaching top 100 in the next few years. It's still fairly rare but so much more used than it was 10 years ago

I agree about a short middle name - I think Clementine Anne sounds lovely or Clementine Emma or Grace

SunbathingDragon · 29/06/2020 14:19

I think it’s a bit of a marmite name and that’s why. It’s not out there at all.
raindrop22 · 29/06/2020 16:42

I wouldn't say it's that marmite of a name, I think it's becoming more and more popular...
