Haider - boys name. Help needed!

Hi there.

So I've had this question for a while now. I've been thinking about boys names for the whole time I've found out baby's sex. I've been stuck on the name Haider for a few weeks.

The reason why it might sound unusual is because it's a muslim name and I was wondering how you'd pronounce it?

The actual pronunciation is Hay-der with the D being a soft D rather than a hard D (as in Day). I wanna know how it sounds to a native english speaker! Does it sound like "heather" if someone told you their baby's name was Hay-der with a soft d?

Please help a girl out! Thank you! ♥️

I’ve only heard it pronounced Hedder

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/06/2020 23:37

It would be pronounced as High-der.

Hushabusha · 25/06/2020 23:38

Sounds like it could be "hey there"

BertieBotts · 25/06/2020 23:40

I don't know what you mean by a soft D - is there another way to pronounce d? In English I only know of the d sound as in day.

I would think it was pronounced Hey-der. It doesn't make me think of heather at all.

KitKatKit · 25/06/2020 23:40

It's a lovely name and I know a few of them.
If you like it, stick to it and just correct people on the pronunciation until they get it right. It's not difficult and actually think it's a huge sign of disrespect to not bother trying to say someone's name correctly.

Bananasplitlady · 25/06/2020 23:42

I know children called both Hay-der and Hi-der. My instinct would be the first.

Hayder. Perfectly fine name. Good choice.

RaininSummer · 25/06/2020 23:49

Never heard that name but I think it's a good one.

BertieBotts · 26/06/2020 00:00

It doesn't sound anything like hater unless you're in America maybe. UK accents don't tend to correct weak t to d.

It reminds me of Hayden, Taylor, Aiden. So I think it makes a nice boy's name.

babba2014 · 26/06/2020 00:01

I'm a Muslim and there was a boy in my class who had the same name. People pronounced it properly. There were no issues with mispronunciation. This was 20+ years ago.

Emmmie · 04/07/2020 01:08

We just found out we are expecting and if it’ a boy, it will be Haydar😊
All the best OP!

NannyPhlegm · 04/07/2020 01:15

There was a Haider in my child's playgroup, and his name was pronounced High-der. Either way, his mum only ever had to correct the pronunciation once, and everyone learnt it.

It's a lovely name. If you like it, that's all that matters

titnomatani · 04/07/2020 01:27

Sorry OP- I'm not personally a fan and I come from a culture where the name is fairly common- though for older men who are 'uncles' in their 50/60s. It's pronounced Heddher- like Heather but with a soft D as mentioned upthread. Reminds me of the word header.

ShinyFootball · 04/07/2020 01:45

I would say hay Der if reading but if met or heard would follow that.

I think it's a nice name.

foxtiger · 07/07/2020 12:19

There was a Haider in my child's playgroup, and his name was pronounced High-der.

Pronounced like that it was the surname of a very right-wing Austrian politician who is now dead. I would have been wondering if the parents were admirers of him (though maybe not if they were Muslims - I don't think he was very tolerant of them!)

zingally · 10/07/2020 13:05

I wouldn't really know what you meant by a soft d. I only know d as in dog and day. I'd say Hay-duh. With the emphasis on the Hay, and the der as very short, almost throw-away.

I wouldn't have known it was a Muslim name, and wouldn't associate it with that community, had you not said.

whichteaareyou · 10/07/2020 19:31

I automatically pronounced it Hay-Der

@titnomatani where are you from?

@BertieBotts ahh, thanks for correcting me. I speak in an American accent so that’s why I must have assumed the same (weak D).

It should be pronounced “hair-the”. But I went to school with someone and it was always mispronounced as Hay-Dar.

allhappeningatonce · 18/08/2020 20:00

I taught one pronounced Hayder - believe background was british indian
