Is Olivia too common?

SqidgeBum · 18/06/2020 15:25

We are expecting our second baby in november. I love the name Olivia but I know it features in the top names of the past few years. For my last girl I purposely avoided popular names. However I also know there are so many girls names that rotate yearly that this may mean very little. I dont want my baby to be one of 4 Olivia's in her class so I thought I would ask how many Olivia's do you know that have been born over the past 2 or 3 years?

In answer to your question. Yes it is too common. However it's also not faddy and probably won't date.

Zoey92 · 18/06/2020 15:39

Only a handfull, but I've always said if that's the name you like then nothing should matter

VinoOlive · 18/06/2020 15:40

My DS is 4 and only know one Olivia and she goes by Livy, she's also just 4.

WilheldivaHater · 18/06/2020 15:41

I personally know 3 Olivias all aged 2-3. It is a nice name but around where I live you can't move for Olivias, it's the new Bella/ Ella.

Angelonia · 18/06/2020 15:42

It's popular but it is gorgeous!

youwereagoodcakeclyde · 18/06/2020 15:44

I know of an Olivia in her 40s, one who is 14 and one who is 10. I do a baby clinics every week (about 6-8 babies but see the same ones 4 times!) for 6 years and cant remember an Olivia yet.

megletthesecond · 18/06/2020 15:46

Too common. Unless you want her to be known as "Olivia X" instead of just Olivia".

GoingBackTo505 · 18/06/2020 15:46

I know 4 of them all under 18 months. It's too popular for me but not a horrible name.

LST · 18/06/2020 15:47

I don't have an Olivia.. I have an Oliver, but everyone used to say how ''common" it is. I don't know a single one! My DS is now 6. I only know 2 Olivia's.

Pinkginhelps · 18/06/2020 15:49

Timeless and classy. The abbreviations are all lovely too.

Enterthedragons · 18/06/2020 15:49

Yes.

emilybrontescorsett · 18/06/2020 15:53

I don't think any name now is common like it might have been 80 years ago.
There are so many different names.
I don't know any little Olivias, just young adults/teenage obes.

Whatsyourflava · 18/06/2020 16:08

It is popular but if you look at the official statistics the numbers of Olivia's have been declining year on year, so it's not like it's shooting up the charts and about to boom

What is your other daughters name? Or if you don't want to say, what approximate number is it in the charts

SqidgeBum · 18/06/2020 16:16

My others daughters name is Heather. Very rare for a baby. Both me and DH are teachers so it's hard to find a name we both dont have bad associations with, hence Heather as it's not a common name for kids. I have never taught a bad Olivia.

I personally adore Olivia and think it works really well with Heather, OP
I also love Olive
Sylvia sounds a bit like Olivia.

userabcname · 18/06/2020 16:57

I don't know any baby Olivias. I know multiple Amelias, Florences, Poppys and Arabellas though. I

Carouselfish · 18/06/2020 17:05

Know teen ones, not baby ones. Don't like it though.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/06/2020 17:10

Yes
They are all about 10 now but there are gazillions. The fact that it became so huge about that time moves it out of timeless.

In 30 years time MN will be full of mothers of teens all called Olivia.

sweetnosugar · 18/06/2020 17:25

I only know 3 Olivias, 27,25 and 10 years.
The 10 year old is the only one in my little boys school. I’d say go for it, it’s lovely!

Sunflower2025 · 18/06/2020 17:46

I only know one, love it. X

MikeUniformMike · 18/06/2020 19:15

It's a nice name but a dull because of its popularity.
Heather is nice.

I'd go for something a bit more like Heather. Neither unusual or overused.

Anappleaday1 · 18/06/2020 19:46

I don't know any and have 2 preschool aged children/am around babies a lot! I think it's a lovely name, but if popularity bothers you then maybe it's not the name for you. Although you never know what the names of your child's peers will be, perhaps the question to ask is - if you don't use it because of popularity but then there are no other Olivias at your child's nursery/school etc will you regret not using it?

twittawoo3 · 18/06/2020 19:55

I work in a school and there isn't one Olivia.
Out of school I only know of one. It's a beautiful name 🥰

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 18/06/2020 19:56

She was at my school. Grin

WinnieWonder · 18/06/2020 19:59

I only know one and she is 18. It has been popular for two decades so you're at the end of the naming trend, ykwim. If you met a 35 year old linda her name would be unusual amongst 35 year olds but ubiquitous among 55 year olds.

I like olivia though. It's a soft pretty name. But to be honest, soft pretty names are not on trend.
