Is Olivia too common?

We are expecting our second baby in november. I love the name Olivia but I know it features in the top names of the past few years. For my last girl I purposely avoided popular names. However I also know there are so many girls names that rotate yearly that this may mean very little. I dont want my baby to be one of 4 Olivia's in her class so I thought I would ask how many Olivia's do you know that have been born over the past 2 or 3 years?

All the Olivias I know are in the 14 -17 age range

123Dancewithme · 18/06/2020 20:08

I know two, both are 3.

peajotter · 18/06/2020 20:13

I know quite a few.

Bear in mind that when she becomes an adult, it doesn’t matter so much how many people of your age have the same name. What matters more is how many people overall in your workplace or social circle.

I was the only one with my name in my year group, but because it was moderately popular for years I often find another in my social circles. It is a bit annoying to be Peajot M in my 40s.

Duchessofealing · 18/06/2020 20:21

There are three in my daughter’s Y3 class (aged 7-8), it’s a beautiful name, does it matter if it’s popular?

MikeUniformMike · 18/06/2020 20:24

I think it suffers from the number of other names that are vowel heavy and with L and V as the main consonants.

Olivia, Viola, Eva, Ava, Isla, Evie, Ellie.

I think that names like Doris will come back.

BabyDust13 · 18/06/2020 20:31

I don't think it's too common it's high up in the list but I don't know anyone young or old called it

loobylou44 · 18/06/2020 20:32

My niece is called Olivia and there are 2 Olivias in the neighbouring houses to mine.

RuthW · 18/06/2020 20:38

I'd say it's out of fashion now. I haven't heard of one for a few years now.

Lavenderblues · 18/06/2020 20:52

Yes very common. Wasn't it THE top girls name for years?!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/06/2020 20:57

It's not common it's popular rather like Sarah was once upon a time.

Ploppymoodypants · 18/06/2020 20:59

I know a few. But it’s a beautiful name and all the Olivia’s I know are lovely people.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/06/2020 21:18

A lot of the girls names that are currently popular (common means something entirely different IMHO) are really pukka - Amelia, Isabella and Olivia being but three. They are also quite beautiful and timeless. They won't date in the same way as names like Mia (where did that suddenly appear from about 20 years ago?).

It's the same with a name like Oliver. Popular yes but also a really strong and timeless one.

Spied · 18/06/2020 21:24

Lovely name but I wouldn't want my DD to go through school as 'Olivia A' or 'Olivia with the glasses' or 'Olivia with the blonde hair' - you get my meaning.
I know of 3. All 2yo.

newmum332 · 18/06/2020 23:05

I don’t know any young Olivia’s.
The youngest I can think of is in her 20’s.

It’s a gorgeous name, I would go for it if you love it.

PJCase · 18/06/2020 23:13

I know an elderly one, an 18 year old and a 5 year old. I don’t think it’s that common any more.

Xmasbaby11 · 18/06/2020 23:16

I know a few Olivias under 10. It's popular.

SionnachRua · 18/06/2020 23:17

It's ok but such a dull, wallpaper name to me.
Heather is a really lovely name, I'd give second Dd something that measures up to it.

SqidgeBum · 19/06/2020 16:10

Thanks everyone! I think after doing some research and realising there were thousands of babies names Olivia last year, we have concluded that we wont call our DD Olivia.

However, the search now continues. We spent an hour today going through hundreds and hundreds of names. We have tried to go for a less popular one to match our DD1 (Heather). We vaguely said Faye was nice, or Alice. I cant believe how fussy we both are to be honest haha.

Alice is a lovely name. In my son's 17 years I've only heard of 1 Alice in his peer group. My nan was Alice Smile

Whatsyourflava · 19/06/2020 16:48

Alice is so beautiful @SqidgeBum

How about Sadie or Greta?

Lavenderblues · 19/06/2020 17:17

Faye is beautiful and goes well with Heather

MikeUniformMike · 19/06/2020 17:42

I like Fay - without the e. A friend has a Fay.

SabrinaThwaite · 19/06/2020 19:43

I knew three sisters called Heather, Hazel and Holly. They’d be teens by now.

Fundays12 · 19/06/2020 19:48

I know off 10 Olivia’s all under the age of 15. One child I know off was 1 of 3 girls in her class of 25 kids called Olivia. When i hear people announce the name Olivia I do think “ohh another Olivia” not in a nasty way as I don’t dislike the name. It is very common but ultimately it’s your choice what you name your baby.

missmouse101 · 19/06/2020 19:55

Yes, it is incredibly common.
