I have a first name that is originally from another culture (I am originally from that culture) however in the U.K. it is seen as chavvy. It’s affected me my whole life and I refuse to do the same for my child.

Could you tell me if these names are even remotely in the chav sector.

Girls:

Sienna
Skye
Matilda
Florence
Emily
Luna

Boys:
Rafe
Louie
James
Oliver
Oscar

Thanks

I really want to know what your name is!!!

I don’t consider any of the names you have listed as “chavvy” although the closest to that would be Skye in my opinion!

LoafingLiz · 16/06/2020 14:25

All perfectly fine names OP.

Cheesecakejar · 16/06/2020 14:26

Not to me and I'm in the North. I quite like them all! 😊 Sienna and Louie are my personal favourites though!

GalwayGrowl · 16/06/2020 14:27

I think Sienna and Skye are chavvy, since you asked.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 16/06/2020 14:28

I'm in Ireland, not UK so perhaps a slightly different demographic. All the names you have chosen are very nice, none of which would fit into that category. Closest possibilty would be sienna though.

ChelseaCat · 16/06/2020 14:29

I would say Sienna and Skye are a bit chavvy. I also think Rafe is chavvy when spelt that way - spell it properly (Ralph) and it isn’t

Sorry OP, hope you appreciate the honesty

Diverseduvet · 16/06/2020 14:29

Skye

Flappingflamingo · 16/06/2020 14:32

I think your boys names are fine. As for your girls names, I wouldn't say chavvy but I just don't like sienna, skye or luna

Jazz2020 · 16/06/2020 14:34

Thank you all so much. I truly appreciate your honest feedback, and I am not here to offend anyone. I think I have a complex about it because of my own name.

Sienna, Luna & Rafe due to them being popular with celebrities, the rest are lovely, classic names.

NannyR · 16/06/2020 14:34

Louie looks much nicer and more of a classic name when it's spelt Louis.

Jazz2020 · 16/06/2020 14:38

Actually I’d like to rephrase my question, as I don’t want to offend anyone or hurt anyone’s feelings.

Which names are LEAST chavvy?

Thanks

I think the best names on your list with what you are looking for in mind are Emily, Florence, Matilda for a girl or James, Oliver and Louis (with an S not an E) for a boy. Nice list! I would also say just pick the name you like best it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks!

Brevityisthesoulofwit · 16/06/2020 14:41

I think all of those are fine names and I wouldn’t specifically associate them as chavvy names. Some have mentioned Sienna and Skye but even those are only in context - if you’re not chavvy them names won’t seen it either

Zhampagne · 16/06/2020 15:32

I would recommend that you spell Louie as Louis.

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2020 15:42

The word 'chavvy' is nasty, judgemental and offensive, and I hate how often it's used on here.

As for that phrase 'chav sector'. Urrggh. There's absolutely no need for it, OP.

pinkpinecone · 16/06/2020 15:43

Op, all the names you have chosen are so commonly used that I wouldn't say any of them are particularly attached to any class. None would seem out of place being used on a working, middle or upper class child. There is so much variety of names nowadays and I'm not convinced names are so tied to class anymore. I used to think of Sienna as a posh name but I certainly don't anymore and contrary to another poster, I have known of very posh girls called Skye and Luna. For the boys, the only one that sounds a bit posher is Rafe.

I'm sorry to hear you were teased for your name, some people can be ridiculously small minded! I really dislike the term chavvy as it's so horribly classest.

Lamazey · 16/06/2020 15:46

I would personally steer away from sienna, Sky and Rafe...but I like really boring ordinary names. Anything too modern/unusual I tend to think sounds a bit "chav" for want of a better way to put it. That's just my opinion though - just pick a name you love! One of the names I picked was last popular in the 70s apparently, I couldn't care less Grin

lazylockdowner · 16/06/2020 16:05

Sienna, Skye and Luna for girls and Louie for boy definitely come under that term where I'm from

lazylockdowner · 16/06/2020 16:06

Oh and Rafe

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 16:08

Matilda
Florence
Emily
James
Oliver
are the most classic and classless names from your list in my opinion.

LemonBreeland · 16/06/2020 16:08

I think Sienna, Skye and Luna could possibly be seen as chavvy. But it depends where you live.

Zhampagne · 16/06/2020 16:08

I think that if OP has herself been targeted for the connotations of her name then she probably has a better idea than many of just how unpleasant some people in the UK can be when it comes to class. The vocabulary might be unfortunate but she's just trying to understand the connotations of her chosen names.

Whatsyourflava · 16/06/2020 16:51

I don't find any of the names chavy but seen as you've asked, I'll put my snobby hat on and close my eyes:

Sienna - potentially chavvy
Skye - potentially very chavvy
Matilda - not chavvy whatsoever - least chavvy
Florence - not chavvy
Emily - not chavvy at all - joint least chavvy
Luna - potentially chavvy (I love it though- one of my favourites)

Boys:
Rafe - potentially chavvy
Louie - potentially chavvy. Not chavvy if spelt Louis
James - least chavvy- not chavvy at all
Oliver - least chavvy - not chavvy at all
Oscar - not chavvy

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 16/06/2020 17:00

I hate classifying a name as 'chavvy'.

I'm not keen on Sienna or Skye personally. All the other names are lovely... especially Florence.
