I have a first name that is originally from another culture (I am originally from that culture) however in the U.K. it is seen as chavvy. It’s affected me my whole life and I refuse to do the same for my child.

Could you tell me if these names are even remotely in the chav sector.

Girls:

Sienna
Skye
Matilda
Florence
Emily
Luna

Boys:
Rafe
Louie
James
Oliver
Oscar

Thanks

OP if you want a classless name then these are your safest bets.

Matilda
Florence
Emily

James
Oliver
Oscar
Louis (with an S not an I)

Names like Emma, Sophie and Charlotte and William, Henry and Thomas would also fit your criteria.

I have a Welsh name in England so understand that people can be very rude sometimes when they encounter names they're not familiar with, and don't realise/take a moment to consider the possibility that said name is from another culture.

IndecentFeminist · 16/06/2020 21:26

Sienna. Verging on chavvy
Skye. As above
Matilda
Florence
Emily
Luna. A little chavvy

Boys:
Rafe
Louie. Getting a bit chavvy
James
Oliver. Verrrrry popular
Oscar. As above

hopefullydevoted · 16/06/2020 21:29

I think sienna and Skye are the closest to chav names. Luna might come up soon as a bit of a chav name. Emily and Florence aren't at all. The boys name are fine

hopefullydevoted · 16/06/2020 21:35

James is getting very overused as a middle name (including by me before anyone kicks off) but there aren't that many babies around with it as a first name. Agree with others about spelling of Ralph and Louis.

user1493494961 · 16/06/2020 21:36

Matilda, Florence and Emily are beautiful. Skye and Luna are chavvy, and Sienna potentially chavvy.
I agree with pp, Louie needs to be spelt Louis. James and Oliver are classic and Oscar and Rafe OK.

formerbabe · 16/06/2020 21:38

None of your boys names are
None of your girls either. Some people think Sienna is but I think it's beautiful.
I see Skye as more hippy than anything else.

Spied · 16/06/2020 21:48

Least chavy
Florence and Oliver

Most chavy
Sienna and Louie

PainintheholeSIL · 16/06/2020 21:55

I'm in Ireland but I think sienna and Skye are a bit chavvy. The rest of your names are lovely. Florence, Louie and James are my favourites from your list.

PainintheholeSIL · 16/06/2020 21:58

Oh and I agree with pp, Louis is better than Louie.

Jazz2020 · 16/06/2020 22:44

Thanks everyone about your responses

I’m surprised about Skye and Sienna as I think those names have been used by people from Made in Chelsea? Though I’m just basing it on that!

I do see your points about the Louie/Rafe spelling but I thought it might prevent mispronunciation issues. But I will definitely take it on board.

For girls I’ve whittled it down to
Matilda, Emily and Florence.

Sienna and Skye are the chaviest. Louis if spelt Louie is also slightly ‘chavy’

QueenOfPain · 16/06/2020 23:00

Sienna and Skye are chavvy.

bluemoon2468 · 17/06/2020 12:06

The only ones I would maybe consider 'chavvy' are Sienna and Louie, and with Louie it's just because names with made up spellings have that connotation for me. The name Louis is very classy. I think Sienna only feels that way to me because the only two little Siennas I've known fit that description 😕

bluemoon2468 · 17/06/2020 12:07

Oh sorry, I completely missed Skye! That's the 'chavviest' of them all imo.

bluemoon2468 · 17/06/2020 12:09

I really wouldn't worry about people mispronouncing Louis - it's a very common name (and Prince Louis' name) and I would say the vast majority of people know how to pronounce it correctly!

Dovefeather · 17/06/2020 12:16

Considering your question, I suggest:
Florence or Emily
James or Oscar

RuthW · 17/06/2020 12:21

All perfectly good names

ShowOfHands · 17/06/2020 13:42

@RedWedding we all make judgements all the time. It doesn't mean that we discriminate based on those judgements but spotting patterns and learning from experience is an innate ability.

If you were told a family had four children named Ludmilla, Ptolemy, Tristram and Ophelia, you'd likely infer a couple of things about that family. Similarly, Demi-Leigh, Kaeden, Nevaeh-Grayce and Kai might have a slightly different background.

We all do it. Irl, I'd hope that 99% of us treat the people we meet according to our base norms and moral compasses but that doesn't mean we don't spot patterns in naming trends.

Cabin · 17/06/2020 13:52

Nuances of how names may be perceived are understood by most people for names of their own culture, and we take this knowledge for granted when making choices. We can ignore the knowledge once we know it, if we wish. But we don't all know how names in other countries or cultures may be perceived. I don't like the word chav, but I was in the OP's situation I would want to know the typical perceptions of names too.

sweetnosugar · 17/06/2020 14:05

Unfortunately as humans, we all judge to a certain extent, but we really shouldn’t, not on a name!
My LB goes to a private school, the names there are so mixed. There are 2 Sienna’s in the school and a Skye in my little ones class, a lot of you mentioned it being downmarket and chavvy, for the record their parents are nothing but!

DoctorBambino · 17/06/2020 14:17

I will be calling my daughter skye if I'm ever blessed to fall pregnant and I'm not chavvy Grin

I dont think any of them are chavvy. The least chavvy I guess would be Florence and Rafe. But they sound pretentious to me, personally I'd rather chavvy than pretentious.

Lulu1919 · 17/06/2020 14:39

Green ones....bit chavy

I would say Rafe and Sienna used to be very posh, but Sienna is getting more popular. Not sure about Rafe. If you aren’t super posh then I don’t think they’re a great fit.

okiedokieme · 17/06/2020 14:55

Luna, Skye, rafe,

Chartsandgraphs · 17/06/2020 14:56

Skye, Sienna, Louie are all chavvy. Rafe to me is the shortened form of Rafael. Using a nickname as a full name is most definitely chavvy.
