Emily or Jane?

My friend is going to be having a girl soon. She wants to name her either Emily or Jane.

She’s going to name her after Emily Brontë or Jane Austen.

I’ve told her I prefer Emily.

What do you think?

Emily

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/06/2020 02:29

Id say Jane as it seems more unique, or Do you think she'd like Emily-Jane

Kokeshi123 · 15/06/2020 02:34

Emily is nice enough but every other girl is called Emily, Millie, Amelie, Amelia, Emilia, Ellie.. Jane really stands out and it is a pretty name. Janey is a cute NN too.

Emily

ivykaty44 · 15/06/2020 05:57

Jane, it’s very pretty

Grufallosfriends · 15/06/2020 08:08

Emily is so overused,

Jane is more interesting but a little plain.

So neither.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 15/06/2020 08:14

I think Jane is due a revival.

RoLaren · 15/06/2020 08:16

My sister is Emily Jane (surname) Win win!

Willowa · 15/06/2020 08:31

Emily, it's popular but popular for a reason. Janes a bit dull to me X

worstwitch18 · 15/06/2020 08:34

Both lovely classic names. I love the inspiration.

I think Emily is a teeny tiny bit nicer but Jane is more unusual nowadays so I like Jane more.

missmouse101 · 15/06/2020 08:35

Neither. Both very boring and nondescript.

NaToth · 15/06/2020 08:42

Another vote for Jane.

Spam88 · 15/06/2020 08:58

For all the claims of Emily being super popular and overused, my Emily is 3 and I've only encountered one other little Emily since she was born.

GU24Mum · 15/06/2020 09:03

I've (not intentionally) ended up with a surname and names for my DDs which are very "Austen" but you don't have to stick to Jane unless she's very set on it.

Agree that Jane actually would stand out and I'd probably go for that one.

Orphlids · 15/06/2020 09:11

Jane. Honestly, I think I’ll weep with boredom the next time I encounter another Emily (so probably sometime within the next five minutes).

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/06/2020 09:39

Jane. It seems like every other little girl is some version of Emily/Emmy/Emme/Milly/Mila/Amelia at the moment...

Jane is a lovely name.

toastofthetown · 15/06/2020 10:07

I prefer Jane. It's beautiful in its simplicity and sounds very refreshing in contrast to the vowel heavy names which are popular at the moment. If popularity is a concern in 2018 there were 2676 Emilys and 26 Janes.

Palavah · 15/06/2020 10:14

I've always thought Jane a bit of a plain name. Isn't Emily wildly overused? Neither is objectionable, though.

What about a character from one of their novels? Elinor, Marianne, Catherine, Elizabeth? Or use Jane or Emily or Eyre or Austen as middle names?

Alexandernevermind · 15/06/2020 10:18

Both lovely names, but have Jayne - like my own name, or both - Emily Jayne sounds really pretty. I love traditional names. Damn, need to change my ID now!

Whatsyourflava · 15/06/2020 10:28

Love Emily! Such a classic

123Dancewithme · 15/06/2020 10:44

Jane! Much more interesting than Emily nowadays.

babynamelover · 15/06/2020 10:47

Another vote for Jane 😊. Would be unexpected.

MamaLion1319 · 15/06/2020 10:51

Emily-Jane, either double barrelled or first and middle names.

kennyjenny · 15/06/2020 11:08

Emily, only because I'm not really keen on 1 syllable names.

Pinkypink · 15/06/2020 11:12
