We like classic style names for boys that are known but rarely used. Teachers, and all Mumsnetters, can you help with some suggestions that you've rarely heard of please but still have the same qualities as names like:

William
Edward
Elliot
Gabriel
Thomas
Alexander

... but hopefully less popular.

These classic names used to be common but have all but disappeared (I was a teacher but retired 5 years ago so there might have been a resurgence in some of them).

John
Richard
David
Gary
Jonathan
Barry
Kenneth
Brian
Vincent
Patrick

There are probably a lot more that will come to me later,

Bananasplitlady · 13/06/2020 09:58

I have only taught a dozen or so boys over the last 5 years with an "English" name, I teach in an area with practically no White British children, so my responses may not be typical!
I haven't had any boys named James, Matthew, Andrew or Richard in a long time.
I do currently teach a little Barry, don't imagine there's many of those about...

Christian and Christopher - there were lots of both of these when I was at school but I don't think we have any in the 800 boys at the school I currently work at.

solidaritea · 13/06/2020 14:34

I'm interested by some of these suggestions - Nicolas, Patrick and Edward are very common where I work/live as they're popular Eastern European names. Not trying to be a pain, just highlighting that local context matters.

Had a class with 3 Henrys once. Not taught any other Henrys or known of one in any other school I worked in!

I like Steven, Gregory, Thomas, Hugo. Never taught one of these, though I'm not sure they're super rare.

bigbluebus · 13/06/2020 14:42

EveryDay I think Stanley is quite a popular name these days. I know a 3 yo Stanley and since knowing him havd heard of quite a few others.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 13/06/2020 16:11

Probably new testament type names?

Paul
Michael

chubbyhotchoc · 13/06/2020 17:47

Don't know why someone suggested Henry. There are 5 in my dd's class. I'm a teacher and I'll list a few I don't hear much.
Douglas
Gregory
Frank
Wilfred
Hugh

emmathedilemma · 13/06/2020 18:34

It probably depends where you are too, Ross, Scott, Douglas, Alistair are all quite common in Scotland across all age groups.
