To ask what is actually ‘popular’ for baby girls at the moment?

I’m kind of wondering about popularity of names in general. I often read on here ‘oh that’s so popular/overused’ and I’m wondering what it’s actually based on.
As a teacher I would say the popular names are:
Ava
Evie
Mia
Amelia
Sophia

But then these are children around 8-10 years old.
What are the ‘popular’ names for baby girls at the moment - I know I could just go by the charts but it doesn’t seem to always correlate.
Do you know of lots of baby girls being called the same thing?
I’ve heard of a fair few Ivys recently for example.

I would agree with your popular name list as a fellow teacher. In terms of babies, names I've heard more than once in the last couple of years: Alice, Everly/Everleigh, Arabella, Florence, Luna, Poppy.

Luna
Penny / Penelope
Astrid

I once taught a class with 4 Freyas and 3 Bellas! (Girl’s school, to be fair..)
Any variation of Isabella or Amelia, really. And Niamh/Neve.

ILoveStickers · 13/06/2020 09:11

General trends in baby groups here:

  • Shortish names ending -a
  • Names starting with vowels, especially A
  • Names with V sounds in them
  • "Old lady" names popular around 100 years ago - flowers, gemstones, things like Edith and Mabel

I don't know any exact doubles of any girls' names at the moment, but most fit into these trends.

ILoveStickers · 13/06/2020 09:13

Sorry, flowers, gemstones, Edith, Mabel etc are examples of the old lady names - formatting went weird.

All this is in contrast to the names of my generation. All my friends' names start and end with consonant sounds and none contain V! Not a flower or gemstone among us either.

Does anyone think Matilda is popular?
This is our frontrunner at the moment, with just six weeks to go.
I was also a teacher, and I've never taught a Matilda, but over heard it's quite popular.

Sleepyquest · 13/06/2020 10:36

@Liverbird77 I know of one Matilda born in the last 12 months so I'd say it's not too popular

honeybee1986 · 13/06/2020 10:44

I have a Matilda aged nearly 4 and never come across another Matilda in her nursery or any of the activities she attends . I'm in south east , doesn't seem too popular really ! X
