To ask what is actually ‘popular’ for baby girls at the moment?

I’m kind of wondering about popularity of names in general. I often read on here ‘oh that’s so popular/overused’ and I’m wondering what it’s actually based on.
As a teacher I would say the popular names are:
Ava
Evie
Mia
Amelia
Sophia

But then these are children around 8-10 years old.
What are the ‘popular’ names for baby girls at the moment - I know I could just go by the charts but it doesn’t seem to always correlate.
Do you know of lots of baby girls being called the same thing?
I’ve heard of a fair few Ivys recently for example.

Sofia/Sophia
Harper
Zoe
Aria

Their big sisters are called
Eva/Evie
Ava
Emily
Olivia
Amelia

Does anyone think Matilda is popular?

I taught a Matilda last year. She’s 6 now. Only one I’ve ever had. A few Tillys about though.

I think it's a lot to do with certain letters and sounds. M/L/A/E and the "ie" ending are all popular, hence these names, some are popular in the charts and others just sound popular because they are so similar sounding to the top 20 ones: Mila/Mia/Lila/Lyla/Aria/Aurora/Evie/Ellie/Ava/Luna/Ella
Any girls' name with these sounds, even if it's completely invented will sound popular and 'typical'.
Amelia is the most popular of all and it's no coincidence it includes A, L and M in one name.

Sienna, Summer, Winter, Willow, Luna, Lottie and variations on Lila/Lilah/Lyla/Leela/Leila seem to be popular where I am. Plus some of the the usual short, vowel-heavy names: Ava, Evie, Ivy, Isla etc.

The longer flowery names seem to be getting slightly less popular (Isabella, Annabelle, Amelia etc) and double barrelled names have disappeared for newborns. No more Lily-Roses and Gracie-Maes.

Looking at the boards, there seems to be a sudden increase in names starting in Ar- and Ad- this year. Ada, Adelay, Adelaide, Adelyn, Aria, Ariel, Ariella, Arianna.

SiaPR · 14/06/2020 06:27

Place names and animals are still very popular; London, Israel, Panda, & Wolf are some I have heard over the last few years.

SpillTheTeaa · 14/06/2020 06:33

Tilly
Isobel
Cali
Penelope
Daisy
Poppy
Chloe
Ava

Recent babies have been Matilda, Mabel, Daisy, still lots of Olivias too!

123Dancewithme · 20/07/2020 00:45

Quite a few Aurelias and Auroras recently.

I think this is accurate. There are so many similar names that although individually they won’t all be high in the charts, collectively they sound very frequently used.
Heh1991 · 20/07/2020 01:26

Common names I’m seeing a lot are:

Isla
Penelope
Mia

sel2223 · 20/07/2020 01:42

Olivia
Eve/Eva/Evelyn/Evie/Ava

Whatsyourflava · 20/07/2020 07:33

You can check the top 100 by area @Prettylittlelady so you can see how many Matildas were born in your area
That's much much reliable than asking here

I don't know any matildas

Prettylittlelady · 20/07/2020 09:59

@Whatsyourflava I wasn’t asking about Matilda I think that was a different poster on this thread! 😊

All names seem to start with A or E.

Adelais · 20/07/2020 11:26

A lot of the old favourites like Ava, Evie, Isabelle etc are still popular for babies. Other names I’m hearing a lot for baby girls are Ada, Margot, Elsie, Arabella, Willow, Adeline, Cora.

threeduckslittle · 20/07/2020 11:53

Just look on namesdarkgreener for the latest stats!

TempsPerdu · 20/07/2020 17:30

I’m in London.

Mainstream popular would be:
Ava
Isla
Olivia
Grace
Sophia/Sofia

Florence
Violet
Ivy
Any of the ‘Eve’ names
Any of the Lila/Layla/Lily/Lyra type names
Still a fair few Chloes about

‘Trendy popular’ (so will be mainstream popular soon):
Mabel
Juno
Olive
Ottilie
Margot
Elodie
Edith/Edie

I think the general trend is away from cutesy, straightforwardly pretty and vowel heavy names towards ‘harsher’, more solid sounding ones - but it’s quite a gradual change.

SweatyAndyFromWoking · 20/07/2020 21:41

Chloe has been going down in popularity but I've come across 3 born within the past year and know two others born within the last 5 years all in the same county.

foxtiger · 21/07/2020 21:08

I only know two baby girls at the moment (well, technically toddlers now) - they are Luna and Ivy, both names that have been mentioned on here already.
