Just wondering what you all think of the name Malina (please be as honest as possible, I won't be offended) I personally think it's lovely, but worried it is too out there.

Also, forgot to say, it would be pronounced Ma-lee-na

I know a Malina (adult now). She's lovely. It's a lovely name and def not overused.

Corndollie · 31/05/2020 16:57

Malaena, pronounced the same way is the medical term for a poo with old blood in it.

smiffypeabrain · 31/05/2020 16:58

Look up Maleana (different spelling same pronunciation though) you might change your mind. Sorry.

onalongsabbatical · 31/05/2020 16:58

I was going to say lovely but poo with old blood on it took the shine straight off.

Letseatgrandma · 31/05/2020 16:59

It sounds too much like melena to me, which is rather unpleasant (blood in faeces).

curlyhairdiva · 31/05/2020 16:59

Defo changed my mind now! This is why I love this website haha. Thanks @corndollie and @smiffypeabrain

I really like it!

Destroyedpeople · 31/05/2020 17:06

It's horrible it means raspberry in Polish or 'melina' would mean some kind of dirty squat or drinking den

Bonzabaybee · 31/05/2020 17:09

If I’m honest I don’t like it, makes me think of ‘malign’.

AndyMurraysCat · 31/05/2020 17:14

Malinda is better imo

Bonzabaybee · 31/05/2020 17:41

Or malingerer

crosser62 · 31/05/2020 17:44

It always make me smirk a bit when I hear it because it means blood in poo in medical terms.
I did wonder at first why someone would call their child after poo, but it’s an actual name apparently.

GarlicSoup · 31/05/2020 17:48

One of the Obamas daughters is called ‘Malia Ann’ which I think is lovely.

DramaAlpaca · 31/05/2020 17:56

No, because of the medical term. Also the prefix 'mal' in front of a word tends to be negative - malaise, malice, malign, malingering.

MrsEricBana · 31/05/2020 17:58

My parents were going to call me Melena till a doctor friend told them the above...

Skykavin · 31/05/2020 18:01

What about Marina instead? Smile

CoconutHead · 31/05/2020 18:02

@skykavin I have a Marina ❤️

Bonzabaybee · 31/05/2020 18:11

Marina’s lovely

Think it means mermaid in Italian?

Bonzabaybee · 31/05/2020 18:13

No hang on, I’m thinking Sirena Grin

Aquamarine1029 · 31/05/2020 18:15

First thing I thought of was some kind of medicine.

AlpineSnow · 31/05/2020 18:16

I like Malia and Marina

sourcreamnchives · 31/05/2020 18:16

Except moelena is the medical term for bloody stools 🙈 sorry just saying

Hopefulmidwife · 31/05/2020 18:20

It looked odd for a second written down, but when I said it out loud it sounded lovely Smile

Smerald0 · 31/05/2020 18:26

It’s becoming an increasingly small world, and the prefix “mal” means “bad” in Latin based languages, hence the medical references from some.

As an example, the adjective “bad” is “male” in Italian and “mala” or “malo” in Spanish.

Personally, I’d choose another name !
