The only names I like for a girl are Harlow and Everly. Even then, I’m not blown away.

For a boy, Chester is ok.

The kids like Max, but I’m not keen.

Please throw suggestions my way, I am completely sick of searching through websites now.

If you like Chester how about Cole? Caleb?

Flymetothestars · 25/05/2020 15:50

Barnaby or Tristan?

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 15:59

I think Harlow, Everly and Chester are all pretty awful and will date badly. Sorry.

I'm with your kids on this one, Max is a good name.

What are your kids called?

My older two are Caleb and Faith. I am bothered about how names date, so that’s a good point.

Jared
Lucas

Devon
Rudie

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 16:32

Caleb and Faith are both nice names and they have a similar feel to them, with one being a Biblical name and the other a virtue name, and the same number of letters. They're also quite "old" names but have quite a modern feel to them at the moment. I would try to pick a name which goes well with those two.

Some ideas for a boy:

Jonah
Seth
Noah
Reuben
Isaac
Joel
Micah
Elias
Aaron
Gabriel
Jacob
Ethan
Raphael

For a girl:

Leah
Naomi
Joy
Grace
Amity
Eve
Tamar
Zoe

Oh fgs the 'dating badly' thing again 🙄

I like Chester. Harlow is lovely. I think we have similar tastes. How about:

Marlowe
Brooke
Jensen
Phoebe
Scarlett
Evan
Teaghan
Terryn
Madison

Wolfgirrl · 25/05/2020 17:51

Oooh I like Devon for a girl! Also like Demi

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 18:10

@Wolfgirrl Literally every name on that list except Phoebe is going to make teachers groan and assume the child will be a delinquent with chavvy parents.

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 18:11

Actually Evan is OK. But the rest are dreadful.

Wolfgirrl · 25/05/2020 18:29

@peperethecat my sister, a teacher, has chosen a similar name for her son. So...

Those 'classic' (aka dull) ones make me groan imagining a kid with a Hyacinth Bucket style mother. Someone who envisages their child being an accountant with no personality, who collects stamps or something.

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 18:32

You sound like a teenager (which might explain your taste in names).

Wolfgirrl · 25/05/2020 18:33

@peperethecat

You sound about 93.

Might explain yours.

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 18:34

The names I've suggested aren't names a 93 year old would pick, FFS.

They aren't even names I would pick. They're names I think the OP might like which aren't toe curlingly awful.

Starsandglitter · 25/05/2020 19:17

So many nasty comments on this thread! I like Everly but there are quite a lot of Evie names around if that bothers you. Harlow seems a very different style to Faith. What about a nature name like Skye? Chester and Max are both great names!

Wolfgirrl · 25/05/2020 19:29

@peperethecat I find your snobbery toe curlingly awful

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 19:32

Maybe you do, but my "snobbery" is shared by lots of people including people who might be sifting through these children's CVs in the future. Most of your names will be a terrible, dated millstone round any child's neck in 20 years time.

Wolfgirrl · 25/05/2020 20:11

😂😂

I think they'll be too busy looking at their qualifications to worry too much about the name, unless its Cherryade or something.

Parents like you give your kids names that embody how you want them to be - sensible, professional job etc

You forget that they won't want to be seen this way, they will want to be seen as fun, attractive and exciting.

I have a so called 'classic' name often cited on here as 'strong and timeless' and I absolutely hate it. I used to cringe telling boys what my name was. It certainly hasn't opened doors and I've been massively out-achieved by girls at school named Chantelle and Gemma. The only thing it has done for me is made people say 'Oh I was expecting you to be older' if they read my name before meeting me.

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 20:14

Being called "Teaghan" doesn't say "I am fun, attractive and exciting", I'm afraid. It says, "my parents aren't very well educated and have tacky taste in names, and so I'm probably not very bright".

Wolfgirrl · 25/05/2020 20:15

Go on then peper tell us your mythical names that guarantee CV success and extremely intelligent parents!

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 20:16

I have a so called 'classic' name often cited on here as 'strong and timeless' and I absolutely hate it.

And unfortunately your kids will probably grow up resenting you for lumbering them with something stupid when you had a perfectly normal name.

It certainly hasn't opened doors and I've been massively out-achieved by girls at school named Chantelle and Gemma.

This part doesn't surprise me. Gemma is a fine name though. The rest of the girls' names you listed apart from Phoebe are definitely Chardonnay names though.

pinkpinecone · 25/05/2020 20:20

Wow @peperethecat that is unbelievably classist. An unusual variety of names have become pretty normal. It's ability, education, confidence etc that lead to success not being called William.

Maybe someone looking through the CVs in 20 years time will be called one of these 'chavvy' names? Shock horror!
