From reading MN posts we seem to be drawn to posh, pretentious and snobby names (as called by users), I like them personally. Looking for some more suggestions for DS/DD please x

Clemmie83 · 25/05/2020 16:32

Rafferty is always a favourite of mine!

BlusteryLake · 25/05/2020 16:34

Anything ending in the "-uh" sound for girls - Araminta, Perdita etc. Anything ending in "-us" or "-o" for boys.

daisypond · 25/05/2020 16:38

Some of these names aren’t posh at all - most are ordinary, some are positively downmarket.

Edenember · 25/05/2020 16:57

@victorianbombshelter think for me the quintessential ones which spring to mind are Arabella for a girl and Tarquin / Quentin / Rupert for a boy. Cressida is cool. Apparently Xanthe is a posh name although I‘ve never had that association. Charmian, Hermione, Tabitha, Pippa, Romilly.

victorianbombshelter · 25/05/2020 19:24

@flappingflamingo I really like Cuthbert! Montgomery, Magnus, Wilbur, Miles... so many!

Girls I love Ottilie, Felicity, Cressida, Beatrice!

Haven't run any by DH yet but anymore suggestions would be great, I'm writing up a list xx

Trouble is if you give your kid a really pompous name and you are quite obviously a fairly normal person it just makes you look daft. Grin

I absolutely love araminta and minty for short. But it would be comedic with our last name, my DD's name and our very normal working class backgrounds.

I like the idea of twins called Araminta and Sebastian / Minty and Seb, in some kind of alternative universe.

HairyToity · 25/05/2020 22:32

I met a little boy called Otto recently, with very posh parents.

victorianbombshelter · 26/05/2020 22:47

You guys are amazing. So fond of many of your suggestions, should you think of more, please do update this thread x

I stayed in a huge country house for New Years and sneakily peeped in some of their Christmas cards (the kind of posh where they had a senders address on the card for “something manor” and also the town house in Chelsea”) and the biggest recurring name was, interestingly, Olympia, which wasn’t really on my radar at all. These were mostly daughters aged 10-18 judging by the photos on the cards (which is another super posh trend I wasn’t aware of - my friend who went to public school confirmed that apparently once you get to a certain level of posh the done thing is for your Christmas card to consist of a photo of your children. Not Christmassy, no props or outfits or anything, normally taken outside, normally without the parents in it, and this is done up until the children have children of their own...).

Grufallosfriends · 27/05/2020 17:25

the done thing is for your Christmas card to consist of a photo of your children.

No need for any poshness. That's done in most countries from my experience, at least until the kids are teens. I honestly don't get this 'posh' labelling in the UK.

And I love most names on this thread btw.
