Looking for a classic name for James' little sister to be.
Comments welcome. I like these two and underused I think?

Juliet. If you hate jules I would avoid Julia. Julia is a bit meh for me personally. I have a few Julia friends in our early 30s.

I love Juliet. I have a James too and his middle name is Sebastian. I like classic names. They can shorten it is they like too.

I should say Juliet, but I prefer Julia. Which sounds better with the surname?
I dislike the nn Jules though, and I know lots of Julias so I wouldn't use either. Both are ok though.

Both are nice. But since you don't like Jules... The Julias I know (all adults) all get shortened by some people to Jules. One of them finds it very annoying, and is forever correcting people. Whereas the Juliets I know (also adults) get called Juliet.

I love Julia. I've known children called Julia before and it suited them.
Not so keen on Juliet but then I think I am biased as have negative connotations due to negative experience with a Juliet..

Julia is a family name I would love to have used except my niece got it before my daughter was born. It’s beautiful, traditional and grown-up. Like some pp, Juliet looks like a diminutive to me, but it is pretty. Go for the one you like best.

I'm early 30s and know a Julia and a Juliet my age (both from my year at Uni). Julia felt quite old fashioned at the time, unlike Juliet. However, Julia really suits her and I've never met another Julia.

I prefer Juliet (it's on my non-Welsh list) but Julia is nice too, it's a very pretty sound. It does feel a bit old fashioned, but actually in a ripe for revival way.

The Juliet I know, and a Juliette I know are just Juliet/Juliette, not Jools if that helps?

DH prefers Juliette spelling so that Ettie or Etta could be pet names. You could shorten Juliet that way too I think, and Jet could work as a pet name.

I would pick Julia as it has a lovely sound, is classic yet fairly unusual, and suits all ages.

Juliet is lovely but I can't help mentally adding 'Romeo and' in front whenever I think of it. Forever a teenage romantic heroine, it might not be a name that fits right. Plus as a pp pointed out, it means 'little Julia'.

Julia is gorgeous.

justlooking1 · 24/05/2020 12:26

It will go with a pretty standard 2 syllable surname and either fit well.

I think Julia is lovely.

One of my best friends has a Lucia (pron. Looo-sia, ) and I love it. She gets called Lulu and Lou too.

Pygmyseahorse · 24/05/2020 12:42

Love them both and both on our list

They both work well with your sons name too, would you want to use a nickname? That's really the only thing I can think of that would sway it.. More nickname options with Juliet, if you hate nicknames then go with Julia

FeedMeSantiago · 24/05/2020 12:59

Both nice, prefer Juliet.

Lucia is lovely. My favourite pronunciation is the Italian one - Loo Chee Ah. Spanish is more like Loo See Ah.

sweetheartyparty · 26/05/2020 17:26

I'm a Julia and I love my name. My parents picked it because it was hard to shorten but I still got called Julie and Jules.
As a caveat, I am 43 so middle aged but I never knew any Julia's growing up, plenty of Julie's though

Julia Smile
