Long rant - can't pick boy name

SisterCellophane · 23/05/2020 17:22

Hi, can anyone help me and my boyfriend name our baby? I just found out yesterday that it's a boy and we can't seem to agree on any names. My favourites are Tom (Thomas on bc), Jack, Harry, Sean, Sam(uel on bc), Daniel, Matthew...all shut down instantly as were the second tier choices Oliver, Charlie, Peter, Joseph, Michael and Callum. He knows/knew someone called Jack he doesn't like, he says Sean and Callum are "chavvy"(!), Harry is vetoed because it's a pet he had/because of Harry Potter...the rest he just says are too boring, or he just doesn't like them.
He's also blanket-vetoed anything featuted in the Bible, which I don't really follow as this is most normal names and I don't think it implies you're religious to use one?
The problem is, I only seem to LIKE "boring" names. I grew up with probably a top-5 name for the year and it wasn't that bad, I always knew a couple of other people with the same name and...so what??? Everyone develops their own individual personality, so I don't actually think anyone needs to have individuality thrust on them. I also really don't want a name that's pretentious or people will have preconceptions about, and I feel like the best way to avoid preconceptions is to have a name that's quite common? Like surely the fact people know 5 Toms or Matts mean they're less likely to have a set picture of what someone with that name is like.
Boyfriend also says he wants a name that "looks good on a CV", which is surely these generic white guy type of names, or else picking an overtly "posh" name, which I don't want to do because we're a modest middle-income couple and I feel like it just looks stupid/try-hard if our son has a name like Tarquin when he'll be going to state schools and living in a 2-bed flat etc (also my family would absolutely rip the piss out of me...)
We're English living in London. Extended family in the North East (Newcastle area/County Durham) and South Wales (no Welsh heritage ethnically, all Welsh names vetoed. Of Irish heritage. Would use Irish names (in fact boyfriend said he liked them so I built hopes around "Sean" which were then sunk) but nothing difficult for English speakers to pronounce (don't mind a counter-intuitive spelling as any Irish-language derived name will have one, just want to be able to spell it).
Boyfriend doesn't really have any suggestions. We looked through the popular baby names and he liked Arlo, which I initially shot down. Now I think it's growing on me? But I'm not convinced. I've never heard this name before and it doesn't have a clear origin, so it doesn't feel like a proper name to me? Also it's just come up out of nowhere which to me comes off like it's kind of a fad/tacky/will date badly, and I'm generally not keen on "O" endings.
TL;DR I have three questions:
1.) Is there a name I'm overlooking that we might both like? (Names we like but can't use for personal reasons are Conor, Rory and Laurie)
2.) There are three names we both deemed "acceptable" although I think that's as warm as it gets and I like but don't love - Fred(erick on bc...), George and Alfred (bc only would be Alfie or Fred IRL). How do you rate these? All likely to enrage my older relatives with their overt Englishness but they emigrated here so they can suck it up.
3.) Can you convince me on Arlo, or even better, convince my boyfriend on Tom/Jack/Harry/Sean? Or are these names terrible?

I know three baby Arlos (yes, really) so I don't think it's as unique anymore.

CaffiSaliMali · 24/05/2020 11:24

Loads of baby Arlos round here (South East).

Avoiding biblical names can be tricky. Tbf, most biblical names I wouldn't associate with religion, especially ones common when I was a child - James, Matthew, Daniel, Rachel, Abigail, Sarah etc.

Names like Abraham or Jebediah would make me think 'oh maybe they're religious' for all of about 5 seconds.

What about Alistair, Edmund, Patrick, Owen, Richard, Christopher (Kit), Edward, Henry?

If he likes Irish names, then go for a Celtic theme? Might he accept something like Jago which is Cornish (albeit for James).

It sounds like he is quick to say he doesn't like a lot of names, but has only suggested one name so far (Arlo)?

He needs to start saying what he does like!

What names does your boyfriend like other than Arlo?

Arlo is awful and will date badly. Your choices are all much more classic and will look much "better on a CV".

SisterCellophane · 24/05/2020 12:17

I quite like Theo but he doesn't!

Thanks everyone - sorry, I don't have the hang of how to reply on here yet at all so I'll just leave this here!

What about Felix or Louis?

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2020 12:24

@HaveAtEm what's wrong with the name Clarence? It's classic and very underused. Perfectly respectable name- I don't follow your horror that a child would be named this? Maybe I've misunderstood?

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2020 12:24

If not Arlo how about Milo or Hugo or Otto?

peperethecat · 24/05/2020 12:26

Or what about Arthur? You could sell that as a compromise between Arlo and a classic name that won't date badly (which seems to be what you're after).

peperethecat · 24/05/2020 12:26

I also think Milo will date badly (and possibly to a lesser extent Otto), but Hugo is a good suggestion.

SisterCellophane · 24/05/2020 12:35

#Aclh13 do you know adult Arlos? I've just never heard of if before except Arlo Guthrie! Obviously it's not something someone's randomly made up, but I just thought it was really unusual? Like it wouldn't have occurred to me. But it now seems to be a totally normal and no-one blinks twice at it!

OP posts:
peperethecat · 24/05/2020 12:38

I think it existed before but it's experiencing a sudden surge in popularity. I think it'll be this generation's Gary or Lee.

PixieN · 24/05/2020 12:40

What about Robert (Rob/Robbie/Bertie for short)

Other suggestions:
Edward (Eddie for short)
Owen
Oscar
Robin
Lucas
Tommy

There is an app like Tinder for baby names, where you each download and swipe what you do and don't like. The list your left with is what you have both liked. Might be an idea before you end up cross with him for being negative while not offering many suggestions.

CaffiSaliMali · 24/05/2020 12:52

OP Arlo is currently the 36th most popular boys name in England and Wales (2018 stars, 2019 stars will be released around September time). 1,715 babies were named Arlo in 2018.

You can see how it has shot up in popularity on Dark Greener:

British Baby Names also featured Arlo as one of their 'names of the week' which discusses possible origins for the name.

HaveAtEm · 24/05/2020 12:54

@flymetothestars are you sure that you ‘don’t understand’ why the name ‘Clarence’ is ‘so underused’? Really sure? 🤷‍♀️

I think you do understand and your faux misunderstanding disingenuous! Nobody with an ounce of compassion would saddle a young baby with the name Clarence...it isn’t a name that would go down well in some secondary schools, poor kid! And you know this...but will probably continue to argue just for the sake of it 🤷‍♀️

daisypond · 24/05/2020 12:56

@Sk1nnyB1tch

Daniel is very biblical and one of the more famous characters - Daniel and the lions’ den?

peperethecat · 24/05/2020 13:01

@daisypond If the OP's partner is so dead set against any Biblical names then odds are he hasn't actually read the Bible from cover to cover and she might as well keep suggesting names whether they are biblical or not. Unless of course he's dead set against it because he was traumatised by hours of Bible study during his strict religious upbringing. But that's probably not the case. If he decides he likes a name she suggests and he doesn't realise it appears in the Bible, well what he doesn't know won't hurt him. Wink

daisypond · 24/05/2020 13:13

@peperethecat

That’s very true!

MikeUniformMike · 24/05/2020 13:19

Of Fred, George and Alfred I only like George.

Arlo is too trendy.
Theo is so overused and I don't like Theodore at all.

Give the baby your surname.
