Full name - too long? Help!

Hi all!

I posted the other day asking opinions on the name Sebastian James Livingstone. We still like this name, however OH is now doubting it as he thinks it could be too long. I also know of a few Sebastian's born over the last few years...

So, what do you think of our other option:

Austin James Livingstone

(not an option to change middle name as it has huge sentimental family value)

Which do you prefer?

Sebastian Livingstone
Or
Austin Livingstone

Thank you! x

I like Cian. I think there might be lots who don’t know how to pronounce it, though.

Alexander (Alex, Xander)
Tristan
Vincent
Raymond (Ray)
Wilfred (Freddie)
Peter
Edwin
Thomas
Marius

Aw I love both names. Great choices! Slight preference for Sebastian as I know a lovely Seb. My DS has a long name too which we shorten but we chose it so he can be flexible about what he wants to be called when he's older.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/05/2020 10:09

I don't mind Sebastian but not a Seb fan. I like Austin. I prefer Ciar to Cian.

I like Sylvester too but again not great for shortening.

diddlediddle · 25/05/2020 10:10

Max Livingstone is cool. And Arthur Livingstone sounds very smart!

finallychangedmyusername · 25/05/2020 11:32

I much prefer Sebastian

LockdownLoon · 25/05/2020 12:47

@diddlediddle thank you, I agree with Max Livingstone! Sounds like a cool name 😇 too much choice!

@WaxOnFeckOff I agree, I'm not 100% sold on Seb but love Sebastian. However he would undoubtedly get "Seb" most of the time..

I've heard people using Bastian but I think that would take more work to embed and is also a bit close to Bastard.

HollyBen · 25/05/2020 13:15

Sebastian is much nicer

LockdownLoon · 25/05/2020 22:15

@WaxOnFeckOff Bastian is okay, I like the nickname Bash! Just not 100% on Seb for short..

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 25/05/2020 22:21

You can't really control the nick name as he might choose Seb for himself. Though my DS2 ended up with a name based on the picture on his jumper when he was a baby that stuck!

probably just as well waiting now. DS1 didn't suit any of the names we had for him so he didn't have a name for 4 days. We didn't even bother thinking before DS2 was born, hence he was a week and a half with no name.

LockdownLoon · 26/05/2020 20:15

OH has just made a very rare suggestion.

Reuben Livingstone

Thoughts??

♥️

It's lovely. Too biblical for our atheist household but not everyone is us :o

It goes well, no issues with initials, Roo/Ru is nice for short (those are also generally short for Ruaridh). If you both like it it sounds like a contender :)

daisypond · 26/05/2020 21:11

Not for me. Old Testament boys’ names are dated in general. Robert or Rupert are better. Or Rudolph.

LockdownLoon · 26/05/2020 21:49

@WaxOnFeckOff @daisypond thank you for your opinions!

I think deep down my heart is set on Austin. At least we have a top two to choose from!

OP posts:
kahronah · 26/05/2020 21:52

I love both. I actually can't decide. Keep in mind that Sebastian will likely be shortened to Seb.

kahronah · 26/05/2020 21:53

I'll add that to me Sebastian has more of a posh sound. Austin sounds more trendy.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/05/2020 21:57

Lockdownloon, I may happen to be married to someone with your favourite...

LockdownLoon · 26/05/2020 22:03

@kahronah thank you! (I love your username 😂)

@WaxOnFeckOff oh really? It's a great name and I've loved it for years! ♥️

It's obviously not that common especially in his demographic (late 50s). Interstingly DS2 had one in his class at primary (so late teens now) and also had another 2 DC in his class with the other two of the 3 final names we had for him and 1 with the other name we decided between for DS1. Apart from 1 (Ciaran) the others are all relatively uncommon. I know Ozzy is a common nickname but he's never been that. Usually Aust or other names unrelated to his name.

It's a shortened version of Augustus so if you wanted to go posher, you could have Augustus Livingstone with Austin for short.

LockdownLoon · 27/05/2020 17:47

@WaxOnFeckOff thank you so much for all of your comments, you've really helped me!xx

I like them both, where I am Austin is often nicknamed to Augie.
Best of Luck 🍀

Fishfingersandwichplease · 27/05/2020 17:55

I think it is a really grand sounding name - go for it!
