I think it has a really pretty sound. It’s classic, quite international and has a nice meaning, but is it too dated? Could you imagine it on a baby born in 2020?

It's a lovely classic name. It would be refreshing to meet a baby Sarah!

VerbenaGirl · 23/05/2020 12:05

I like it, definitely a timeless one with a lovely sound to it.

custodiandiscount · 23/05/2020 12:08

A lovely classic name. my colleague's daughter is sarah and when he told us the name, lots of people said what a nice timeless name it is, also used in lots of other languages and cultures

LotusClover · 23/05/2020 12:09

Yes, I find it dated - very 80s/90s. I prefer Sara, but with that comes pronunciation issues.

worstwitch18 · 23/05/2020 12:09

I know two young Sarahs (teenagers) but no babies. It's a beautiful, classic name. I can imagine it suiting a young child very well and it ages nicely, i.e. it suits little girls and women.

EveryoneLoves09876 · 23/05/2020 12:09

I know too many, but it's not offensive at all.

Loyaultemelie · 23/05/2020 12:10

I have a 2010 Sarah (dd1) and my 2015 dd2 has 2 in her p1 year

NuffSaidSam · 23/05/2020 12:11

It's nice and I don't think it's dated, but it's just too popular for me. I know it's not popular now, but because it was sooo popular for a time, I must know about 40 Sarah's. They're all adults, but still a no from me.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/05/2020 12:11

I'm one and when I was at school there were loads (80s kid) but it not used now so I'd say go for it if you like it.

OnlyToWin · 23/05/2020 12:12

Lovely name with lovely meaning.

Whatsyourflava · 23/05/2020 12:20

I think it is a nice name and it would be refreshing for our generation to hear it on a baby.

But putting yourself in the position of the next generation, it might sound very uncool and mumsy as all their mates "uncool" mums, aunties dinner ladies are all called Sarah and Becky. Do you know what I mean? She'll be the only sarah in the school probably but will share her name with half the mums. I remember at my school in the 80s there was a Colin, a Philip and a Sue. All rare names for our age group but I felt sorry for them as they all had the names of our parents

Whatsyourflava · 23/05/2020 12:21

Everyone will be like "that's my 45 year old mums name" 🙈
Whereas a name like Emma or Sophie (and I appreciate you may not want a name so popular) will be the names of other people their own age as well as the name of some parents

OnlyToWin · 23/05/2020 13:01

Think Colin and Sue are dated but Philip is quite a classic name.
I see Sarah as more like Elizabeth or James type names - classic rather than dated. It was top 100 for years and years so there must be some in each generation.

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2020 13:02

I think people these days would be pleasantly surprised to hear of a baby Sarah. It's an underused classic and must be due a revival. Lovely name.

Singingatmidnight · 23/05/2020 13:07

Nice, go for it. Although more popular in a previous generation, it fits in with lots of currently fashionable names (short, two syllables, ends in A), so I don't think it will sound too dated.

needasleep · 23/05/2020 13:08

I have a 16 year old Sarah, she loves her name and doesn't think it is old fashioned.

formerbabe · 23/05/2020 13:11

Nice but bland

NameChange84 · 23/05/2020 13:17

It does sound dated to me OP. Sara less so. Agree that it would be a bit like calling a child Sue or Linda when I was a child at school. I remember there being a Beverley at school in the 90’s/00’s and none of us could understand why she had such an old fashioned name. Sarah isn’t quite in that league but it’s not far off either.

Classic/timeless to me would be Elizabeth, Helen, Beatrice

Sarah sounds in the same bracket as Angela, Joanne, Becky, Karen etc

Pajamagirl · 23/05/2020 13:17

My dd name , I love it obviously
She is 32 . She had a few classroom friends with the same name but I have t heard it in younger children lately .
It doesn’t date imo , it’s both a girls and a woman’s name . It’s not cutesy , it’s beautiful and classy .

35andThriving · 23/05/2020 13:21

According to the Office of National Statistics, the name Sarah ranked 103rd most popular girls' name, in 2018 - Most recent statistics available. This is in England and Wales. Sara ranked 98th. Just over 1,000 babies were called Sara/ Sarah altogether.

All that makes me think a child now wouldn't suffer too much from having a "mum name" if they were called Sarah. I do know an 18 year old Jacqueline that hated having a mum name through secondary school, but I think Sarah is more timeless than that.

I think a little kid now would just associate it with Sarah and Duck.

It's a decent name which I think works at all stages of life. Nice choice. Smile

ThomasHardyPerennial · 23/05/2020 13:27

It is a lovely name.

Northernsoullover · 23/05/2020 13:27

I think its beautiful. When I had my son 17 years ago I met a mum with a newborn Sarah and I remember thinking how lovely it was in sea of Freyas and Olivias.

Bertucci · 23/05/2020 13:30

I went to school with a dozen Sarahs. It's an OK name but utterly bland.

I think it belongs in the 60s/70s along with Clare, Anne and Lynne.

daisypond · 23/05/2020 13:35

It’s lovely. Sarah is a name I associate with my generation, mid-1960s - there were loads at school. That’s the era I associate it with. But I know Sarahs of all ages. It’s a classic, so timeless.

seriousandloyal · 23/05/2020 13:39

A beautiful name.
