Thoughts on Frances nn Francie for DD please? I'd probably team with a slightly frillier middle name as we have a hard sounding surname.

Looking for a timeless underused name for DD that is feminine and strong, no longer than three syllables at an absolute maximum please.

This is the only name I have in mind at the moment, reeeeeally struggling for anything else. I feel it's a classic that hasn't revived yet. Help please MN?

I love it.
I also love Norah, Maud, Faye and Esme.

StavrosFlatley · 20/05/2020 21:35

I really like this name 😀

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 20/05/2020 21:44

Princess Diana's middle name was Frances after her mother. Beautiful and will never date I don"t think.

Frarnces · 20/05/2020 21:45

It’s an awesome name and the best nickname. There’s a chance I’m biased. I was surprised how many people call her Francis though - even a teacher at one point.

nevergoingoutagain · 20/05/2020 21:46

Yes yes yes!!! Frances is my big girls name. She has chosen to be Frankie as a nickname but at home she is usually Frances. Except I call her dood short for Frankie doodles lol. Her middle name is Isabel.

It suits her so much, she's the strong silent type lol

nevergoingoutagain · 20/05/2020 21:47

Yes the male female spelling misunderstanding is a bit annoying!

singswithitsfingers · 20/05/2020 21:47

Could you have Francesca?

arickitupyourpompom · 20/05/2020 21:48

Horrible sorry

june2007 · 20/05/2020 23:05

Also love Francesca.

Mucklowe · 20/05/2020 23:28

Such an ugly name. Don't do it!

DramaAlpaca · 20/05/2020 23:33

Nice name. I like it. It's so much more classy and elegant than the
fussy Francesca.

I like Francie as a diminutive, again it's classier than Frankie.

midsomermurderess · 20/05/2020 23:35

I like it. Jayne with a 'y' is awful.

RickOShay · 20/05/2020 23:44

Lovely.
What about

Beatrice

Honor

Ines

Greta

Marianne

Nina

Rose

Lois

lottiegarbanzo · 20/05/2020 23:52

Yes and I like some of the other suggestions too. How about:

Esther
Miriam
Deborah
Ruth
Bryony
Eleanor
Laura
Rosa
Cleo
Diana

Ellmau · 21/05/2020 00:40

Feminine yet strong:

Miranda
Rosalind
Alexandra
Rachel

Wheresthebiffer2 · 21/05/2020 01:12

I pronounce Francis and Frances exactly the same.

If it's a girl Frances, she's likely to be Fran (which I'm not keen on). You don't choose her nickname, either she does, or her friends do.

BeBesideTheSea · 21/05/2020 01:39

It will be forever mis-spelt as Francis (even by teachers). And it is an old fashioned name (but that will fit in at the moment - 40 years ago ... not so much!)

How I long to be Francesca ...

Ihaveamind · 21/05/2020 02:07

I had an Auntie Frankie who was lovely, so I'm biased to like it. Her middle name was Rosaria if that helps ☺️

FagashJackie · 21/05/2020 02:11

Frances is such a beautiful name.

mathanxiety · 21/05/2020 06:27

Surely you want France iss? Therefore Francis?
@fallfallfall
No, Francis is the masculine version.

Frances is pronounced Fran-sez or Fran-sess.
Francis is pronounced Fran-sis.

wizzler · 21/05/2020 06:35

I for im and e for er
Think that's cleared up the spelling issue

Roselilly36 · 21/05/2020 06:37

Lovely name, great choice.

GrannyGoo · 21/05/2020 06:40

I know 3. One in her 70s known as Frankie. One in her 30s also Frankie and one in her 20s always called Frances. Timeless classic name, lovely. Did you ever read 'a tree grows in Brooklyn'? The heroine is called Francie. Great book.

mathanxiety · 21/05/2020 06:58

I love the name Frances. It's a classic.
I like both Francie and Frankie as diminutives/ NNs.

For a MN, I think one beginning with a vowel would flow best:
Olivia
Alicia
Abigail
Eloise
Emmeline
Evelyn
Eva
Adelaide
Ivy
Eirene
Amabel
Elfrieda
Opal

I also think names that are a little old fashioned would go well:
Rosemary
Rosamund
Beatrix
Hope
Ruth

Or something equally soft and elegant:
Willow
Marceline
Paloma
Wren
Rowen
Winter
Hazel
Dove
Haven
Rue

NameChange84 · 21/05/2020 07:23

Love Frances! Definitely classic and underused.

I love the name Frances Elizabeth.

The siblings I know with a Frances (who is known as Fran) are Ruth and Beatrice.

It’s also my sister’s middle name.

I’d never have thought of it but it’s such a classy name!
