Chic girls names

Looking for help with girls names. I'd describe the style name I like as quite chic sounding but not too frilly or flowery. Nothing too popular like Grace, Ava, Isla etc, prefer known but unusual/less used names.

Names I have so far in order of preference are:

Claudia (the 'lame' meaning doesn't bother me)
Felicity (I see this is rising in popularity though)
Bianca
Sylvie (DH's suggestion)

In addition, if anyone could think of any similar to this list that we could consider, fabulous x

It just has the word Pen in it. There is no i or s in Penelope.

How on earth is the word penis in the name Penelope?

PolloDePrimavera · 17/05/2020 18:32

There aren't many Sadies if that helps. I also like Stella.

@35andThriving and @Ohtherewearethen the PP is just trying to show off that she knows "penis" in Spanish. She could be bilingual or she may simply be especially fond of the word "penis".

florascotia2 · 17/05/2020 19:03

It all depends on what you mean by 'elegant'. I think of someone like the designer Jean Muir - strong shapes, pure lines, no frills, no fuss, no irony....

Following that, the sort of names that follow are plain, strong and simple.

Jean (as above) or Joan,or Jane, Mary, Honor, Faith, Agatha, Agnes, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anne/Anna, Helen, Judith, Bridget, Catherine, Emma....there are others.

Latin and ancient Greek names can be elegant, but not if they are fussy.

Absolutely no names ending in 'elle' or 'ella'. No supposedly 'unique' names (no name is unique unless freshly-minted) .

No European or other culture names names suddenly discovered and used out of context: Eloise, Ottilie etc. Brilliant if they are from your heritage, but otherwise...

Very very sorry if this sounds impolite.

whatausername, thanks. I didn't know that. Smile

Years ago when I was in my teens, a family on our street got a Spanish au pair. Since we were similar ages we eventually became friends and the girl she looked after was named Penelope, she pointed it out to me as she thought it was funny and it stuck with me. There's no bilingual showing off or penis obsession going on.

Toilenstripes · 17/05/2020 19:33

Hazel and Pearl are not chic!

Perhaps, but given this is forum is in English there's no reason to suppose the average reader knows Spanish. Might as well have just said 'pene' is Spanish for 'penis' so I find it amusing how MNers suggest 'Penelope' so often. Otherwise, it can seem like showing off or drip-feeding.

TazSyd · 17/05/2020 19:37

Bianca is a bit chavy. Same goes for Chelsea.

Chic - to me, would definitely be short and crisp rather than flowery, and grown-up, not cute or frilly. Bianca and Felicity would be the opposite of chic to me!

Anna
Blythe
Jean
Sylvie
Saskia
Honor
Hebe

all good

ShagMeRiggins · 17/05/2020 23:20

Absolutely no names ending in 'elle' or 'ella' Hmm

But by all means bring on Jane and Helen.

(Both lovely names. I have an aunt called Jane and my MD is a Helen. But what an arbitrary prejudice.)

MaMaMyCorona · 17/05/2020 23:25

Saskia, Sasha, Anna, Cordelia, Vivien, Giselle, Odette

ginandoreos · 17/05/2020 23:27

I have a Sylvie - we get so many compliments on her name. We don't know any other Sylvie's - apart from once I heard another parent call it at the swimming pool! It means 'of the forest'.
