I’ve seen the more common ones like Alberta, Roberta, Thomasina, Theodora etc.

Does anyone have rarer suggestions? I really like the style of these kinds of names.

I love Benjamina, Benedicta, Jacoba, Frederica, Gregoria, Jamesina and Adamina, but I’d love to see any of these used more tbh.

Before anyone panics that I’m considering these for a baby (though there are several I would definitely use!) they’re actually pet name inspiration until I’m ready to TTC in a couple of years.

Scotland is often cited as the historical queen of the "add an -a, -ine, -ina to any old male name" historical trend. Some of them - Angusina, Archibaldina, Donaldina, Hamishina, Hughina, Stewartina - are a bit of a mouthful. A lot of times they got shortened to Ina (or Mina, Dina, Lina, Shina, etc.)

One legit Scottish one I do really like is Jacobine/Jacobina. Also recently came across Malina as a Scottish feminine form of Malcolm (much better than Malcolmina!) - interesting as it's also a stand-alone girls' name here in Poland; it's the word for raspberry.

Other MTF favourites (not necessarily unusual):

  • Fernanda
  • Filipina - another Polish one - wouldn't use because it's a nationality in English, but it seems less awkward than Philippa to me
  • Joelle, Joely
  • Justine - love this - although I'm not crazy about Justin. The form Justyna is traditional in Polish, and still used
  • Paulina, Paolina - there's also Paula/Paola and Pauline - for some reason I like all of these better than poor old Paul!
  • Petra, Petrin, Petronella
  • Simone
  • Tamsin - preferable to Thomasina, IMO
  • Vinca - cheating; it's actually a French flower name (periwinkle) used as a girls' name, but in English it looks like a feminisation of Vince(nt)
AragornsManlyStubble · 10/05/2020 12:32

Now Archibaldina is definitely a showstopper!

Thomasina is a family middle name which I love, though until it was mentioned I forgot how much I love Benjamina.

Unfortunately, it's also pronounced very like 'melaena', which means blood in your poo. You'd have to really emphasise the 'a' - MALL-ina and not MUH-lina.
