Sterling or Steen?

Bottom choices have come down to these two that we absolutely adore yet we can't quite pick one of them and also having trouble with middle names so even considering not using any.

What do you think?
Do you think these could work as stand-alone names or any middle ideas?

Thanks everyone xx

I've never heard of the second, the first reminds me of cowboys. What other names were on your list? 😊

debrasmith · 01/05/2020 05:32

I think none of them. Sterling is an eagle from Animal Crossing (a game that my daughter plays) and Steen... You don't even need an explanation as to why that's a horrible choice. Might I suggest something much better, such as Frank, Gerard, Mikey or Ray

All the best, Debra

I like Sterling the best from your list. Sterling Moss was one of Britain's greatest racing drivers, he died last month. Good name.

AllyBamma · 01/05/2020 06:04

Honestly not a fan of either of them. I like Lachlan from your second list

TKAAHUARTG · 01/05/2020 06:07

Steen sounds too much like Dean. Which I hate, it’s a 70s name for a rough boy.

Carrie7469 · 01/05/2020 06:11

I'm really sorry, but none of them. Fraser and Lachlan are just about passable. The rest are just really dreadful. Sorry.

I honestly don't think that Holland, Race, Flint and Bingham are even names. If they are they shouldn't be.

ArriettyJones · 01/05/2020 06:15

Lachlan is lovely.

BrooHaHa · 01/05/2020 06:16

Sterling

samandpoppysmummy · 01/05/2020 06:24

I think Stirling (like Stirling Moss and the Scottish city) is better than Sterling (which makes me think of Pound Sterling and Sterling Silver)

daisypond · 01/05/2020 07:07

Steen is awful. Sterling marginally better but I would spell it Stirling automatically. From your second list, Fraser is good.

Cyberworrier · 01/05/2020 07:21

Fraser and Lachlan are nice. Steen far too much like spleen I’m afraid. Race... surely you get that would be an uncomfortable and weird word to have as a name? Same for Holland. The rest sound like surnames to me. Agree with pp Stirling not Sterling.

BadApe · 01/05/2020 07:24

I don’t think you can call your child Race, can you?!

MaccaPacca81 · 01/05/2020 07:25

Always try and think "what will his teenage mates call him".

Steenis the penis

User1775564212 · 01/05/2020 07:29

Stirling, not Sterling.

helpmum2003 · 01/05/2020 07:29

Lachlan, Fraser or Campbell

Sittinonthefloor · 01/05/2020 07:31

Fraser. Maybe sterling. Steen would be very, very unkind if you are English - it looks made up or like Steven with a typo, it sounds ugly, it rhymes with peen, it sounds like stain. It is a naughty boy name. Maybe it is a nice name in other parts of the world!

MrsBungle · 01/05/2020 07:31

Lachlan and Fraser are both nice. I also like Campbell. All the others are truly awful.

Ontheblackhill · 01/05/2020 07:33

Are you American? I understand that naming traditions are very different there. I assume those names are family names? From your list lachlan and Fraser are lovely Scottish names that are used as first names. The others are really not first names in the UK and might make life difficult for your child who would be constantly explaining his strange name. If in the UK I would choose between lachlan or Fraser for the childs sake.

babynamelover · 01/05/2020 07:56

I really like Campbell :) I taught one a number of years ago Cam for short.
Lachlan is quite popular here in NZ it is lovely though.
Fraser is good too I met one years ago.
Callahan seems more like a surname what about Kellen or Callum.
Are you looking for suggestions too or just people's impressions?

ohthepigeons · 01/05/2020 07:58

Fraser is lovely.

user1480880826 · 01/05/2020 07:59

I know a middle aged woman who calls herself steen short for Christina. I think it’s a horrible sounding name. It’s also not a name.

Race has many uncomfortable connotations. Your son will have a lifetime of being taunted about what race he is. Again, it’s not a name.

Holland is a country, not a name. The rest are either not names or they are surnames.

I get that you want to be quirky and different but giving your kids totally made up names is not big and it’s not clever. Especially when they are random words or horrible sounding words. Give your kid a break.

Beenjuice · 01/05/2020 07:59

I was on a Facebook game with an American woman who’s relative had a baby that they called Braxton Hicks. Being terribly British I said how lovely 🙈

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/05/2020 08:04

They are all surnames to me, I'm not keen on any. Steen is particularly awful.

saraclara · 01/05/2020 08:09

Steen just sounds horrible. If you go for Stirling, it needs that spelling, not with an e. Fraser is bearable as is Lachlan. Sorry, I don't like that others at all.
