What do you consider popular/overused names?

Just out of interest... I know there are official stats etc. but I find there’s a difference between something being popular and sounding overused. Currently weighing up options, it doesn’t bother me as much as DH but he keeps coming out with “Oh that’s too popular” to quite a lot of my ideas. TIA x

It depends on the current trend.

Right now I feel like the girls name I hear constantly is Ava.

A few years ago Amelia

Before that Olivia

Boys names recently Noah

Before that Harry and Jack

Without outing myself too much when I was expecting dc1 I refused to consider any names in the top 100 as they were too popular so I ruled out a lot of favourites. When dd started school there was only one name with 2 children called the same thing - hers. Even with super popular names there was one Isabella, one Harriet, one Charlotte but double of dd’s Name.
With my sons his name is mega popular but has always been my top boys name so I said didn’t care how popular it was and I don’t.

Where I live, the most common boys names are Leo, Logan and Max. There’s two of each in the school nursery class. The three women in my office who had their babies before I had my first all called them Logan. For girls, Isla seems to be very popular.

Whatsyourflava · 28/04/2020 19:11

Me personally- I avoid top 20 names but far more than that I’ve avoid the fastest rising names within the top 100/150. So for boys I’d avoid Roman and Hunter for example.

Does your DH have a popular name and not like it then? Would you mind telling us what names you’re considering

Cbeebiesrehab · 28/04/2020 19:25

I think names like Jack, Olivia, Isabelle/a etc are popular and could be deemed as ‘overused’ but they are relatively timeless and won’t date. I would be much more inclined to avoid ‘trendy’ names that might date. Such as Arlo, Willow, Hunter etc. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with those names though and it’s purely my opinion.

userabcname · 28/04/2020 19:26

It varies by area I think. In my area there are a lot of little girls called Mia and Holly and lots of little boys called Archie and Thomas. In terms of babies, I know of a few Arthurs, Florences and Arabellas. I know that George is very popular nationally but I don't actually know many and no babies of that name. Meanwhile I thought Felix was quite rare yet know 3 pre-schoolers with that name.

FTMF30 · 28/04/2020 19:26

Poppy

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 28/04/2020 19:29

I know 3 Elsies whose parents all thought they'd be the only one!

Clevererthanyou · 28/04/2020 19:30

Mae, May, Mai, Grace, Rose as hyphenations was incredibly popular. There aren’t many children in my local school who don’t have hyphenated names now.

popcorndiva · 28/04/2020 19:30

Evie, Amelia, Isabella, Mia, Isla, Ivy for Girls

Harry, Oliver, George and Thomas for boys

popcorndiva · 28/04/2020 19:31

Oh and giving your DD Rose or Grace as a middle name

Its always prefixed with "it was my grandma's name"

maa1992 · 28/04/2020 19:34

Names with "-Lilly" attached or "-Grace" I have two of them in my family and I find them so overused.

Amelia is becoming really common now

I can't think of many boys names that are common

rosieposies · 28/04/2020 19:34

I gave my daughter what I thought was an original name, after the main character one of my favourite books. Then 6 months later they did a film of the book and it was really popular sooooo I don't think it's going to be very original when she's older.

LotusClover · 28/04/2020 19:34

Amelia, Evie, Ellie and Lucy are ones that I get tired of hearing. They're all nice names though.

MrsBungle · 28/04/2020 19:35

Jack, Harry, Ben, Jacob, Oliver

Evie, Olivia, Millie, Isabelle, Gracie

Bluebooby · 28/04/2020 19:35

It seems very popular in my dd's age bracket at least for girls name to end in an "a" sound. Like Sophia, Orla, Lilah, Emma, Lia, Mila, etc. Our dd has an "a" at the end of her name too.

Bluebooby · 28/04/2020 19:35

Sorry it's probably spelt Leah not Lia.

Blursula · 28/04/2020 19:42

Isla, Evie, Ava for girls.

Agree Rose seems to be almost every little girl’s middle name!

And Theo, Arlo, Milo and Miles seem to be very popular right now.

Russellbrandshair · 28/04/2020 19:43

Noah, Finlay, Oscar, Oliver, Jayden, Harry,
Sophia Mia Ella Jessica rose poppy lily Isabella

Nothing wrong with any of those names but they are SO common now they’ve lost all uniqueness and specialness. Just merges into a generic blur

Clevererthanyou · 28/04/2020 19:50

Bluebooby, I’m a Leah and I’ve met others with the same name but who have spelt it Lea and Lia so you’re not wrong Smile

mamablondie2 · 28/04/2020 20:03

@Whatsyourflava DH didn’t like Lily or Noah because they’re too popular. I love Noah! Baby is a girl but if we ever had a boy I would really like to name him Noah so it does bother me.
