What do you consider popular/overused names?

Just out of interest... I know there are official stats etc. but I find there’s a difference between something being popular and sounding overused. Currently weighing up options, it doesn’t bother me as much as DH but he keeps coming out with “Oh that’s too popular” to quite a lot of my ideas. TIA x

Names that I'd see and think that's really common:

ANYTHING HYPHENATED. No matter which names you use I just find hyphenated names common now 😂

Lily
Rosie
Isla
Ava
Amelia
Mia
Olivia

Also girls names that add a H on when it's not necessary! (Lilah, Miyah, Laylah)

And then...
Noah
Jacob
Lucas
are the ones I hear over and over again for boys!

paerol · 29/04/2020 09:28

I ALSO think it's right to point out though, that I generally hear more 'unusual' names than 'common' names now though.

A lot of the time I think you can no longer predict if there'll be no kids with the same name or 5, I think a lot of people are striving for a more individual name than one of 10.

Smellybluecheese · 29/04/2020 09:34

Ada is becoming super popular - I have 3 colleagues with an Ada just in my office of about 20 people (London). I also have a friend with a 5 year old Ada. My DD is 5 and the common names in her age group are:

Isla, Sophia, Ellie, Amelia
Charlie, Toby, Oscar, Freddie

teapotstorm · 29/04/2020 10:32

DS1 is Oliver which was number one in the UK and in our city the year he was born, he’s been at two schools and has been the only Oliver in his class each time strangely enough.!

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2020 10:44

Not all of them individually overused but vowel-heavy girls' names with L or V as the main consonants seem to sound so samey.

Lily, Lola, Lila, Luna, Lyra, Lyla etc
Myla, Mia, Mila, Milly, Maya, May
Amelia, Amelie, Emilia...

Olivia, Eva, Ava, Ivy, Evie...

Ellie, Eleanor, Elodie, Elsie, Eliza, Ella, Bella...

Tilly names - Matilda, Ottilie...
Milly names - Romilly, Amelia, Emilia...

Frilly A- names. Aurora, Aurelia, Arabella, Aaliya, Amaya, Annalisa...

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2020 10:49

I should have included Isla with Lila, Myla etc,
and Ada with Ava
and Edie with Evie etc.

Overused IMO are names that become dull when you hear them a lot.
One Freya and it's pretty but several and it seems meh. Shame.

CruCru · 29/04/2020 11:07

I agree with MikeUniformMike on most of those apart from Eleanor, which I really like and hardly ever hear.

One name that seems really popular near me is Beatrice - I know several.

For me, pretty much all names that end in "-bel" or "-bella" are too popular.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2020 11:38

I don't particularly hear Eleanor nowadays. I think I knew 3 Elinors and an Eleanor when at school.

It's the El- that makes it samey. Ditto Eloise, Elena, Helena.

It seems refreshing to hear a name with strong consonants. Something like Polly or Tamsin.

Many of the names are lovely, but they become bland.

CantKeepSecrets · 29/04/2020 11:50

Lilly (of many spellings) is very popular here and is usually -mae/May -rose. Also Aria.

Jack , Jackson , Jax , Jaxon as well as Mason are names that I hear all the time.

mayoral · 29/04/2020 11:58

No.

Seeing "Olivia Grace" on every second birth announcement is tiresome.

Hopefulhen · 29/04/2020 12:20

I know it’s not exactly what you’re asking but I do think a name can be overused and therefore really unappealing. Emily has been very popular for much of my life and although objectively it is a nice name I hate it because it’s everywhere.

mamablondie2 · 29/04/2020 13:05

@MikeUniformMike this is the exact point I was trying to make to my DH! That being popular isn’t as much of an issue as having a ‘samey’ name (ie one of that group you mentioned). He doesn’t agree though.

mamablondie2 · 29/04/2020 13:06

@Hopefulhen no no you’re right, I completely agree. I don’t really want to choose a random name simply because it’s ‘different’. I’m more worried about that really x

@fessmess oh god dont think like that.

I'm due in just over 7weeks & plan on calling my little girl Amelia-Grace.

Couldnt care less what people think, i choose that name from the day we knew her gender.
A childs name is what you like not others. I'd hate to think someone didnt choose a certain name because of what others would think.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2020 13:31

I used to think Emily as being a bit wet, but it's grown on me. I prefer Emma.

We gave the DC names we liked and that we knew we'd always like. They have names that were very popular in their age groups, but the names haven't dated badly.

@Zoey92, if you love it, fine, but it is quite a long name, and Amelia is very popular, as is Grace as a middle name. She may well be one of several Amelia Graces with or without a hyphen, and the others will be Amelia Rose. There are several threads on hyphenated names on here, and they are generally not liked.

cptartapp · 29/04/2020 13:44

Noah.
And anything ending in ie.

Zoey92 · 29/04/2020 13:51

Well its a good job i dont pick a name based on popularity or what is "generally not liked"

Mayhemmumma · 29/04/2020 15:39

Isla is so popular where I live it feels a bit dull when I hear it.

PlantPotting · 29/04/2020 16:06

I really love Noah @mamablondie2
Don’t know any
Hope you can persuade him

summersun7 · 29/04/2020 16:11

@mamablondie2 I also have a Noah. Never came on here when I had my son, I'm sure I'd have been told it was too common but I love his name. Only ever met one other.
Many years ago I chose Amelia for a girl. Never knew it was so common. Really debating still using it now. It came back to me in my quest for a name and can't stop thinking about it. I have a frightfully uncommon name myself and hated it.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2020 16:51

@Zoey92, My DC had very popular names, it's no problem. Names are popular because people like them.

Re. Hyphenated names - I suggest you look at the threads.

MamaAngela · 29/04/2020 16:57

For guys- Jason, Luis, Elijah and Ethan.
For girls- Abby, Katie, Jasmine, and hannah

But that's just over hear.

FakeFraudSquad · 29/04/2020 17:01

Here it’s definitely Ava, Evie/Evelyn, Sophia, Amelia

Almost every baby boy I’ve met in the last two years has been a Theodore/Theo/Teddy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/04/2020 17:05

I know five little boys born recently called Eli. That one is suddenly on the up around here...

LozEliza · 29/04/2020 17:15

Freya
