Is Olivia too boring?

Hi,
Basically I’m trying to decide on a name and for as long as I can remember, Olivia has been my favourite name. I think it’s absolutely beautiful and I adore the nickname Liv! The only problem is it’s the most popular girls name and that’s all anyone says to me when I suggest it! So my question is, how much would the popularity of a name put you off? And do you think it’s a ‘boring’ name? as I’ve been told by a few people 🙄. I’m just torn weather to just go with it because I love it or choose something more unusual! Thankyou ☺️ (Sorry for the long message)

Not same name btw, just similar

peperethecat · 28/04/2020 10:48

I think he still thinks every baby is called Jane or John.

Ironically if you actually called your baby Jane or John that would be considered pretty unusual and "out there" in 2020.

MsTSwift · 28/04/2020 12:33

If you chose Jane or Mary that would be actually pretty out there. Would be very refreshing choice in a world of Olivias Eves and Graces!

BeautyinAutumn · 28/04/2020 13:40

I'm in my mid 30s and called Charlotte literally my hairdresser, beautician , work with about 3 colleagues, girls I know called Charlotte. It drives me a bit mad tbh
I wish I had a less common name.
However it's popular because it's pretty.
You can't win but personally I'd choose a far less common name.

Whatsyourflava · 28/04/2020 13:51

@BeautyinAutumn yes I’m an 80s baby with a “top 10” 80s name and it can be a bit annoying. However I’d still pick olivia in 2020 because far few people pick top 10 names these days than they did in the 1980s. If you look at the stats (google the newspaper articles) something like 60% of all babies now have a name outside the top 100 whereas it used to be that only about 30% of names were given names outside the top 100 in the 1980s
I actually don’t know any toddlers called Olivia

Whatsyourflava · 28/04/2020 13:55

Ps @BeautyinAutumn - I love the name Charlotte

Lllot5 · 28/04/2020 13:59

I love Olivia one of my favourites.
What’s boring is people racking their brains to try to think of a word they could use in place of a name. Preferably spelt wrong with a added hyphen.

BeautyinAutumn · 28/04/2020 14:18

Yes, well on the flip side I've always had compliments about my name. Like Olivia it does work for a person of all ages.

Whatsyourflava · 28/04/2020 14:36

@BeautyinAutumn it is a beautiful name, not surprised you get compliments 💐

Serintyjo · 28/04/2020 14:40

Yes its a simple name but definitely not Steven, David, or like Anne simple/boring. Olivia is a beautiful simple name. I'm looking for A names and even thought of Alivia.

MsTSwift · 28/04/2020 17:38

Steven David or Anne would be cool and original these days!

Archie Finlay Eve etc are the boring ones!

SionnachRua · 29/04/2020 01:53

Absolutely - want to be unique? Call the kid Geraldine!

I taught a Linda a couple of years ago, it was so unusual among the hordes of Ellas and Olivias.

user3274826 · 29/04/2020 02:16

OP, if you are going to go for it, and I think you should if you love it so much, please don't give her the middle name Belle, Grace or Rose (or Lily or May). If she wants to be found on the future equivalents of Facebook/Instagram/Linkedin etc then don't lumber her with the same middle name as every other girl too because no-one will find her. I think Olivia Elizabeth flows really well but if not that, at least something different.

MsTSwift · 29/04/2020 06:33

Funny that these days John would be more original and way out choice than Oscar 😁

Looking forward to shift in names my eldest now 13 and heartily bored of the top 10 names of majority of both girls friends. Eve Olivia Grace Lily Isabel/ la - enough already.

User1775564212 · 29/04/2020 07:49

Yes, as is Oliver.

Gtugccbjb · 29/04/2020 08:08

I don’t get everyone saying there was non in your kids school etc. It wasn’t the most popular name then so of course not. Olivias been most popular name for about 3 years so those kids won’t filter through for a while. So ultimately it will be very popular and the equivalent of Sarah.

MsTSwift · 29/04/2020 08:13

Olivia was the most popular girls name in 2006 not sure it’s left the top 10 since. If popularity doesn’t bother you its a good choice if it does then one to avoid

MIgZig · 29/04/2020 08:14

How about the Scandinavian 'Liva' ? And for a middle name 'Constance' . so Liva Constance.

Nannewnannew · 29/04/2020 08:15

I love it! Pretty and feminine, much better than a ‘made up’ name.

Whatsyourflava · 29/04/2020 09:10

@Gtugccbjb well I don’t get what you’ve said as it’s actually incorrect. If you look at the official statistics, the numbers of Olivia’s peaked in 1999 !!!
Each and every year since 1999 there has been fewer Olivia’s born than there were in 1999. The name has peaked and is actually far less used now. Again, look at the stats and look at the thousands more Sarah’s there were in 1980 than Olivia’s in 2015 for example.
Hint: Look at the actual numbers of Olivia’s , not just its place in the chart.

Whatsyourflava · 29/04/2020 09:11

And I have different age children by the way (nursery and school) and I actually don’t know anyone called Olivia. Of course I know it’s not a rare name but I’m yet to meet one.
