Is Olivia too boring?

Hi,
Basically I’m trying to decide on a name and for as long as I can remember, Olivia has been my favourite name. I think it’s absolutely beautiful and I adore the nickname Liv! The only problem is it’s the most popular girls name and that’s all anyone says to me when I suggest it! So my question is, how much would the popularity of a name put you off? And do you think it’s a ‘boring’ name? as I’ve been told by a few people 🙄. I’m just torn weather to just go with it because I love it or choose something more unusual! Thankyou ☺️ (Sorry for the long message)

I think it’s a really pretty name. It’s very popular but that doesn’t mean boring - it just means lots of people recognise how lovely it is.

If you don’t mind that lots of people choose it (and there is no reason why you should mind!) then go for it. It’s pretty and classical and won’t age badly at all.

FireandFury · 26/04/2020 10:13

Olivia is one of my choices if we have another girl OP. One of my best friends is called Olivia, Liv for short and I just love it.

Blursula · 26/04/2020 10:16

I’m currently having this same debate with a boy’s name that has become very popular (Leo). I adore it, but I wonder if its popularity means that it has lost its ‘specialness’ a bit for me.

I think what you have to decide is whether ultimately you would regret NOT calling her your favourite name, and would anything else feel second best?

I would guess that Olivia is probably becoming less popular now (although haven’t checked the stats and also haven’t read the full thread so apologies if this has been mentioned!) and perhaps check the ONS stats on the name in your area.

I think it’s a lovely name with good nn options and I only know two grown-up Olivias!

DontRushSlowDownn · 26/04/2020 10:16

We have an Olivia and I love it. We call her Liv for short. Although it is quite popular she is the only Olivia in her class and there are only 2 in the whole school. She is 8 years.

MrsBungle · 26/04/2020 10:21

I’m amazed at all these posters who’ve never met or taught an Olivia! I know loads and loads. It’s a nice name and extremely popular. The thing that puts me off is that all the ones I know are referred to as Olivia P or Olivia M etc or by their full names to distinguish them from all the others in class or on the football team etc.

pinkpinecone · 26/04/2020 10:23

Given its enduring popularity it's logical to assume that most people posting on here will say that they wouldn't be put off using it because its popular. Only you know it's that a deal breaker.

Yester · 26/04/2020 10:51

My DD has a name that was about 300th on the popularity list, there is another in her class! Never met another elsewhere. But there is only one Olivia in the whole school.

LotusClover · 26/04/2020 11:17

In my DD's school of about 240 pupils there is only one Olivia. It's a lovely name and it has more substance than other popular names (Evie, Ava etc) so use it if you love it.

Ellmau · 26/04/2020 11:19

It's a very nice name.

Or as one pp said, you could go with Livia, which is more unusual and gives you the nn you want.

HarrietTheShy · 26/04/2020 11:21

How about just 'Liv'? Liv Tyler is just 'Liv'.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/04/2020 11:36

I think you'll regret it if you don't use it. It maybe be over done, but. It's not faddy either. It's the type of name that suits any age class or life style. It's also very el egant and feminine.

123Dancewithme · 26/04/2020 11:51

It’s a fine name but I do think it is a bit boring due to overuse. What about Lydia instead?

itsemily17 · 26/04/2020 11:55

Personally I do find it boring yes and there are a lot of them around. But that’s my opinion, it doesn’t help that names beginning with vowels are popular in general, I find them all pretty ‘samey’. I don’t think you necessarily have to go for something really unique/unpopular to avoid being bland either.

SionnachRua · 26/04/2020 12:03

I do think it's boring, yeah. I teach and every time I meet another one I just think "again?". They just blend together.

Having said that if you like it, go for it.

BabloHoney · 26/04/2020 14:20

Gorgeous name. I know lots of little ones called Mia, Isla, Amelia, Ava and Grace but don’t actually know any little Olivias!!

MikeUniformMike · 26/04/2020 14:33

It's a classic - use it.
Yes, it's very popular, but won't date too badly.

BillywilliamV · 26/04/2020 14:42

It is popular because it is beautiful. I have an Olivia, we only know one other. Shewill become

NameChange30 · 26/04/2020 14:53

If you really love the name, more than any others, I think you should go for it. Names are popular for a reason!

In 2018 it was the most popular name in England and Wales, but the actual number of Olivias depends on the region - for example, there were 756 in the South East, but only 254 in the North East.

20viona · 26/04/2020 14:57

Personal choice when it comes to
Names but I think olivia is gonna overused and so boring.

Veganella · 26/04/2020 14:58

Boring

emilybrontescorsett · 26/04/2020 15:01

Is use it. I don't know many baby/toddler Olivias.

BeTheHokeyMan · 26/04/2020 15:03

It's a beautiful name but is so so popular at the moment I can list at least 8 that I know of ! What about Livia ?

midsomermurderess · 26/04/2020 15:32

It's rather like Emily. Popular, very popular, for a reason, easy to spell, pronounce and firmly middle class but a bit, well, beige.

Crazyblonde000 · 26/04/2020 18:58

Thankyou SO much for all the responses! I think I’m just going to go for it! It’s been my favourite name since I was about 12 and I know I’ll regret it if I don’t choose it. ☺️ Next problem is middle names! I think I want to go for something with one syllable as Olivia is quite long... any suggestions? Cx
