Amelia or Amelie

I love the name Amelie and my husband wants Amelia. I like Amelia a lot but love Amelie as much softer but is it too French? We're not French.

Amelia is my preference. In my experience, Amelie is often confused for Emily so she would spend forever correcting people. Especially given you aren't French.

Both are lovely but there are several amelias in my 2 year olds nursery (at least 3) so it depends if you mind it being a popular name

Electrical · 25/04/2020 13:07

Amelia is a medical term for missing a limb, but plenty of people don’t seem to care about that, it’s a hugely used name.
Amelie is fine, kind of just blends in to the ‘ee’ ending names that are everywhere-poppy/ruby/Effie/Ellie/lily/Evie/Emily/Sophie etc.

NameChange30 · 25/04/2020 13:11

If you're not French it would be a bit strange to use Amélie.

When Amélie is pronounced properly, it sounds quite different from Amelia.

How about Milly/Millie? In some ways it sounds similar to Amélie.

daisypond · 25/04/2020 13:23

Amelia has more class. Amelie only if you are French.

Chirpychirpy3 · 25/04/2020 13:26

I don’t like Amelia. Amelie is much nicer.

jaoler · 25/04/2020 13:45

Amelie is much nicer than Amelia to me, maybe because Amelia is much more common!

Whatsyourflava · 25/04/2020 14:16

Both such beautiful names- not much help sorry!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/04/2020 15:18

I prefer Amelie

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2020 15:23

I don't like Amelie nearly as much as Amelia. I think that if you aren't Frence, Amelie sounds really pretentious.

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2020 15:23

*French.

Peachbubble · 25/04/2020 15:43

I prefer Amelie.

Blursula · 25/04/2020 17:03

Amelie

Blursula · 25/04/2020 17:04

As a middle ground I also know an Amalia - pronounced a-MAR-lia

Blursula · 25/04/2020 17:04

Sorry pressed post too soon! She goes by Marley. I think it’s lovely

Chiyo666 · 25/04/2020 17:07

Amelie is much nicer. I only know old ladies called Amelia.
And using a foreign name doesn’t make you pretentious, what a stupid thing to say @bridgetreilly. Do you think that about Phoebe, Samuel and Chloe too?

Ditheringdooley · 25/04/2020 17:08

Milly/ Millie would be a nickname, not a given name, surely? Can’t imagine a grown up Milly.

Emilia is an alternative spelling I think - as in Fox? Less common than Amelia (which is lovely). People would assume you are French with Amelie and would be callling her Amelia anyway.

Ditheringdooley · 25/04/2020 17:08

Speaking as a French Amelie, who is always called Amelia in the UK!!!

3rdNamechange · 25/04/2020 17:09

Amelie , it's lovely, you don't have to be French to use it.

OhLaLlol · 25/04/2020 17:24

Amelie is gorgeous.

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2020 17:52

@Chiyo666 Since Phoebe is a Greek name and Samuel Hebrew, but both are biblical names, I don't think it's particularly pretentious to use them, no. Chloe in its anglicised form is fine, but people putting the accent on looks and sounds ridiculous, imo.

NameChange30 · 25/04/2020 17:59

"I only know old ladies called Amelia."

Ridiculous. It was the second most popular girl's name in England & Wales in 2018. It's been in the top 5 for years.

phoenixrosehere · 25/04/2020 18:02

Love Amelie!

It doesn’t matter that you’re not French nor is it pretentious. It’s about if you love the name and if looking at your baby you feel it fits. That’s it!

Many names come from one root name and different countries write and pronounce it in their own languages.

georgialondon · 25/04/2020 18:04

I love Amelie but really not keen on Amelia

Darcy224 · 25/04/2020 18:05

I like both, but swaying slightly more towards Amelie
