Expecting first baby late July, we know that we are having a boy. DH likes the name Ronnie, which I wasn't originally keen on but coming round to it.
We originally liked Oliver but decided against it because of how popular it is. We also like Alfie but I think I prefer Ronnie out of the two and is probably less popular... Thoughts please?

@Cissyandflora I judge people too (were all only human), but I actually like Ronnie Charlie and Alfie. I’d probably avoid all those names due to popularity though. The Charlie’s I know are very posh funnily enough

GrimmsFairytales · 25/04/2020 14:27

I actually know more Ronnies than I do Olivers. I appreciate that is quite unusual, but it's definitely getting more popular. 3 of the ones I know have been born in the last 2 years.

merryhouse · 25/04/2020 14:34

I'm another who is irresistibly reminded of the Krays.

I'm not keen on names like that myself, but I know an Alfie who was cute (family at my sons' primary school) and some friends from uni had an Archie; so I'm reasonably unconcerned by other people using the construction. Ronnie and Reggie, on the other hand, I would vehemently advise against.

therona · 25/04/2020 14:36

Awful. Mrs Hinch has a baby called Ronnie, and I just think it sounds ridiculous whenever she says it.

viques · 25/04/2020 14:37

Let's face it there are some names that are very unlikely to ever be popular/fashionable again

Ronnie is one of them

Derek

Vernon

Clive

Gordon

Norman

Darren

Are others. There are more.

They should be written on the back of a betting ticket using a bookmakers biro then place in a golden Virginia tobacco tin and buried under a shed in an allotment. Then forgotten for a few hundred years.

I agree with your list, but Ronnie is definitely becoming more popular again.

daisypond · 25/04/2020 14:57

I know a young, lovely and very posh Clive. Also Vernon. Gordon is very nice too.

emilybrontescorsett · 25/04/2020 15:01

This is making me laugh.
Sadly I agree with most of the posters.
I would not like to bump into Ronnie’s mum in a dark alley.

Whatsyourflava · 25/04/2020 15:46

@viques see what you’re saying. Ronnie is number 66 in the official 2018 charts though and on a huge upsurge so by the time the 2020 stats come out it will certainly be top 40-50.

All the other names you’ve listed are practically extinct- outside the top thousand type names

Whatsyourflava · 25/04/2020 15:50

By the way @Roo2020 Op , Im in the minority on mumsnet but I actually like the name Ronnie and the general public obviously do as the statistics speak for themselves! I only know one or two Ronnie’s but it is getting much more popular every year now. If you’re wanting something unusual I’d look outside the top 130+ names.

Maybe you’ll like some of the names I suggested upthread (or maybe you won’t!)

DramaAlpaca · 25/04/2020 16:56

Horrible name.

Mummytobe0920 · 25/04/2020 17:09

Love it!

DariaMorgendorffer · 25/04/2020 17:13

Terrible.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/04/2020 17:18

Awful. I once met twins called Ronnie and Reggie. And another baby called Kray.

lalafafa · 25/04/2020 17:20

Gangsta

BikeRunSki · 25/04/2020 17:24

It’sok, but not if your surname is Rennie! (I went to school with a Ronnie Rennie). The only Other one I know is French, his English wife uses Ronnie as a diminutive of Laurent, which has caught on across a much wider circle of friends and family.

Shayisgreat · 25/04/2020 17:24

I've never met anyone called Ronnie and it doesn't have any negative connotations for me (except that it is slang for moustache in Ireland).

I prefer it to Charlie and Alfie but I wouldn't choose it. If you like it then go for it.

babycakes1010 · 25/04/2020 17:25

I love it ...was on the list for ds2 but went with Frankie

Cissyandflora · 25/04/2020 18:00

@Whatsyourflava I’m glad you were not telling me off for being judgy! I know it’s not right but I really do judge names.
One thing more to say on this though- someone related to me is called Donnie. Donald. He has detested his name from the day he was aware of it. Absolutely hates it. So I don’t like Ronnie because it has the same horrible sound. Plus associations with gangsters. But mainly because it sounds so horrible.

user1493494961 · 25/04/2020 20:49

Awful, gangster connotations.

Lala241280 · 25/04/2020 21:18

Each to their own but Ronnie sounds a chavy name

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 25/04/2020 22:42

Dd has 2 in her class. Aged 7.
"Today, I played football with the 2 Ronnies "

FamilyOfAliens · 25/04/2020 22:46

How about Marley? Idris? Rex? Otis? Cole? Chester? Blake? Rudy/Rudi? Dexter? Casper? Barnaby? Tristan? Kit? Billy?

That’s a truly random selection of names - what makes you think the OP would like any of them?

And seriously - Idris?

Whatsyourflava · 25/04/2020 23:40

@FamilyOfAliens sorry if the selection was random. I’m one of the posters that likes all OPs name ideas - including both Ronnie and Alfie ...but OP said she’d like a name that’s not too popular so I was just suggesting other names I also liked that are much further down the charts than Ronnie and Alfie. Totally appreciate OP might not find my suggestions very helpful. Hope they haven’t annoyed or upset her. 🙏

ofwarren · 25/04/2020 23:44

I just can't get past the gangster connotations. I really don't like it sorry.
