Boy’s name to go with difficult surname

Hi, I need help! Confused
We are due in around 10 weeks and are really struggling to agree on any boys’ names. DH is extremely sensitive about how names sound with the first syllable of our surname, COCHRANE.

DD is Charley - Charlotte - so it kind of needs to compliment that too.
We both liked Rafferty for a while before feeling that it is too ‘brave’ compared to Charlotte. We can’t have Jack, Jacob or Alexander, all of which we both like.
We would both really like a name that can be shortened to a nn.

Example names DH likes:
Thomas
Arthur
Raphael

Example names I like:
Maxwell
Joseph
Zachary
Finley (DH thinks could sound like ‘thin ck’)
Isaac (I agree with DH that this is inappropriate with our surname)
Oliver (DH thinks could sound like ‘I love a c
k’)

What other names are there that could compliment Charlotte but don’t have any remote phallic connotation and go ok with Cochrane??!

If it is a girl we have narrowed it to either Jessica or Megan.

Thanks for your opinions! Smile

Grin at “I love a cock.”

I like Joseph Cochrane.

Tbh, until you mentioned it I wouldn’t have made the connection with cocks etc, I think it’s a good strong surname.

DoctorBambino · 23/04/2020 13:26

Haha Isaac Cochrane made me giggle Grin
I think Rafferty and Charlotte are lovely together... as are Charley and Raff

NewAccountForCorona · 23/04/2020 13:33

Combine Rafferty and Raphael and go for Rafe.

Don't have anything ending in a hard c/k. It doesn't really work having the same consonant ending first name and beginning second name - you would end up with Za-cock or Ja-cock or Mar-cock ...

Lorddenning1 · 23/04/2020 13:43

What about Jesse for a boy or Jessie for a girl 😊

Whatsyourflava · 23/04/2020 13:53

Ah Charlotte and Jessica are lovely names!! Megan is nice but prefer Jessica 🥰

Boys names:

Christopher nn Kit
Wilf(red) nn Wilf
Barnaby nn Barns or Barney
Nathan/Nathaniel nn Nate
Sidney or Stanley
Laurence nn Laurie
Vincent nn Vinnie
Marley
Eli
Ellis
Miles / Milo
Seth
Otis
Casper
Blake
Angus
Dominic
Idris
Chester
Caleb
Austin
Tristan

I've known people with the surname - but never made that connection! Embrace it, own it - call the baby Richard or William.

DarkDarkNight · 23/04/2020 14:00

Maybe not Max Cock Grin sorry...

I think your husband is very sensitive about it. Isaac doesn’t work well though because of the c at the end. Sebastian is nice and can be shortened.

I like Rafferty and if you both like it I wouldn’t worry about it being a different type of name to Charlotte. Raphael is similar in that you can have the same nicknames.

Lordfrontpaw · 23/04/2020 14:04

He may be sensitive because he got teased as a child - I can respect that!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/04/2020 14:06

George Cochrane
James Cochrane
Leo Cochrane
Gabriel Cochrane
Matthew Cochrane
Toby Cochrane
Francis Cochrane
Sean Cochrane
Daniel Cochrane
Paul Cochrane
Alfie Cochrane

Ellmau · 23/04/2020 14:22

I suspect he's sensitive because he endured bullying himself.

Gabriel
Lawrence
Fergus
David

Prefer Jessica to Megan - with Megan the n at the end of both names is a bit repetitive.

Windyatthebeach · 23/04/2020 14:26

Worried about cock would rule Gabriel out. Gay cock.
Just saying
(and I have a Gabriel!)

bridgetreilly · 23/04/2020 14:27

If you love Rafferty, go for it. Rafferty and Charlotte is a perfectly good set of names for siblings.

PennineLEC · 23/04/2020 14:29

This made me giggle but I think you are really smart to be thinking ahead like this. My sister worked with a Gaye Butt, Dick Malt and Dickie Blewer!!!

So from your list I love:
Raphael Cochrane - Raph/Raff is a lovely shortened version. I also don't think it's super popular.
Rafferty is lovely too and I don't think too way out at all.

Safer bets that I think work well are Thomas and Jack but I think you should be brave :)

Arthur is one of my favs but could sound like 'half a...'

x

87Callista · 23/04/2020 14:33

😂😂😭 this is brilliant. And yes for the love of God, do not use Isaac!

How about:
Benjamin / Benji / Ben
Riley
Peter / Pete
Michael / Mike
Maximilian / Max
Solomon/ Sol
Danny
Godfrey
Richard / Dick - ok don't use that one
Joshua / Josh

Lordfrontpaw · 23/04/2020 14:34

(or Ivor)

autumnkate · 23/04/2020 19:07

Rafe is a great suggestion and much nicer than Rafferty imo.

I love Joseph and Joe as well.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/04/2020 19:10

Hudson Cochrane

user1471592953 · 23/04/2020 19:56

Not Benji because someone will ‘change’ it to Bendy.

NameChange30 · 23/04/2020 20:01

Is it too late to use your surname as the family name?
If your DH is so worried about a child being teased for having his surname, he should have suggested your keep yours and considered taking it himself.

Careylisa · 23/04/2020 20:45

James
Elliott
William
Christian

TheVanguardSix · 23/04/2020 20:51

Joseph was mentioned above and I think that sounds fantastic with your surname. It's a great name.

Jethro
Henry
Ellis/Elias
Hector
Andrew
Laurence
Michael
Simon

whatausername · 23/04/2020 21:07

Omg @Whatsyourflava Milo! Cannot have Milo Cochrane 😂

whatausername · 23/04/2020 21:08

Although it could be a very successful Tinder account when he is older Grin

OP, any suggestions you like so far?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/04/2020 21:10

Completely missing the point, but I wonder why, way back, somebody didn't start insisting that the name was pronounced 'Coran' or 'Coren', like apparently happened with the even more unfortunate Cockburn becoming 'Coburn'.

No need to change the spelling - it just enables you to turn it straight back on to the would-be jesters and make them sound like the fools for not knowing the proper standard pronunciation Grin

PinkSquash · 23/04/2020 21:14

I know someone with the same surname as has one of the male names you said to be awkward as his name, it's never been an issue.

if you're concerned I would double check the nn too, so no to Michael etc.

Rafferty is a great name though
