Boy’s name to go with difficult surname

Hi, I need help! Confused
We are due in around 10 weeks and are really struggling to agree on any boys’ names. DH is extremely sensitive about how names sound with the first syllable of our surname, COCHRANE.

DD is Charley - Charlotte - so it kind of needs to compliment that too.
We both liked Rafferty for a while before feeling that it is too ‘brave’ compared to Charlotte. We can’t have Jack, Jacob or Alexander, all of which we both like.
We would both really like a name that can be shortened to a nn.

Example names DH likes:
Thomas
Arthur
Raphael

Example names I like:
Maxwell
Joseph
Zachary
Finley (DH thinks could sound like ‘thin ck’)
Isaac (I agree with DH that this is inappropriate with our surname)
Oliver (DH thinks could sound like ‘I love a c
k’)

What other names are there that could compliment Charlotte but don’t have any remote phallic connotation and go ok with Cochrane??!

If it is a girl we have narrowed it to either Jessica or Megan.

Thanks for your opinions! Smile

This has reminded me of the Dave Gorman programme where he rigged up a baby-name recommender bot website, pretended that he'd just serendipitously discovered it himself and convinced his soon-to-be-father colleague James Fiddler to give it a try.

He didn't go for any the obvious and hilarious suggestions like Dick or Willy, which would have been spotted a mile off, but he did manage to make him seriously consider naming his new son after comedian Adil Ray Grin

Can I suggest you avoid Arthur (half-a) and Benji (bendy)? Megan could also sound a bit like ‘Mega-cock’ 😬

Itsabitmessy · 23/04/2020 22:01

I love Rafferty and Raphael

Bubbletrouble43 · 23/04/2020 22:14

Sorry but I laughed at your post... Yep definitely don't go for Oliver! I like maxwell out of your choices, I think it goes with your surname. Joseph is great too.

Bubbletrouble43 · 23/04/2020 22:16

Just got why isaac is a bad choice 🤣

Bubbletrouble43 · 23/04/2020 22:18

Maybe max not great either. It's Joseph for me then! Nothing wrong with Raphael or rafferty though

bellinisurge · 23/04/2020 22:21

Zephraim. But only if you are a Star Trek nerd and know who that is.

pallasathena · 23/04/2020 22:24

You need a short name to go with your surname.
Tom (Thomas)
Sam (Samuel)
Alex
Caleb
Tim (Timothy)
Jay (James)

123Dancewithme · 23/04/2020 23:52

I would rule out Max, Megan (mega) and Zachary (Zac has the same problem as Isaac!)

Thomas sounds good.

JustAnotherMumTho · 23/04/2020 23:58

I thought Joseph before I'd finished reading your post and then saw it on your list. Goes really well your DD's name, too.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/04/2020 00:05

Hugh Cochrane
Harry Cochrane
Moe Cochrane
Neil Cochrane
Ruben Cochrane
Seymour Cochrane
Watson Cochrane
William Cochrane

donquixotedelamancha · 24/04/2020 00:06

See, lots of names go fine. Not sure what your husband is worried about.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/04/2020 00:13

If it is a girl we have narrowed it to either Jessica or Megan.

Those are quite conservative. How about:

Annie Cochrane
Frieda Cochrane
Helda Cochrane
Iva Cochrane
Ivanna Cochrane
Norma Cochrane
Ophelia Cochrane
Rhoda Cochrane
Shara Cochrane
Tara Cochrane

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/04/2020 04:09

donquixotedelamancha - really, some of those?!?!

Hugh - easily adapted to huge or you
Harry - could sound like hairy, especially in an American accent
Ruben - rubbing
Seymour - self-explanatory!
William - shortened to Willy to give the double-whammy

ALittleBirdhouse · 24/04/2020 04:27

Barrnaby?

ALittleBirdhouse · 24/04/2020 04:28

Or even Barnaby! Grin

POP7777777 · 24/04/2020 04:38

Isaac Cook (I suck cock)
Finn Cook (thin cock)
Thomas Cook (travel agent)
Jack Cook (too many 'CK' sounds)
Joseph (Joe) Cook (Joke)
Eli Cook (He like cock)

How about:

Charlotte and Adam/Charley and Adam
Charlotte and Elliott/Charley and Elliott
Charlotte and Harvey/Charley and Harvey
Charlotte and Leo/Charley and Leo
Charlotte and Daniel/Charley and Danny

POP7777777 · 24/04/2020 04:41

Sorry! I meant Cochrane, not Cook. Same difference when it comes to the names though!

POP7777777 · 24/04/2020 04:43

Zachary would possibly be shortened to Zach. This has too much emphasis on the 'CK' sound when put with Cochrane.

BelfastNonBlonde · 24/04/2020 04:45

Joseph Cochrane goes really well. Or Daniel and it’s nns

babynamelover · 24/04/2020 05:32

Charlotte &

Quentin
Walter
Matthew
Albert
George
Benjamin

donquixotedelamancha · 24/04/2020 07:13

donquixotedelamancha - really, some of those?

Oh gosh, I didn't see any of those. I guess I just don't have that kind of mind. At least the girls ones are ok.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/04/2020 10:22

I guess I just don't have that kind of mind.

And just what are you implying by that?! Grin

IckleBear · 24/04/2020 10:57

I love Rafferty with Charlotte!

ArtichokeAardvark · 24/04/2020 11:01

Robert (Robbie)?
Henry?
