Benjamin or Rupert?

I love both names so much but loved Rupert first! Thought I’d see what others think. I feel like Rupert is more unusual but still traditional... also I don’t really like the idea of Benjamin being shortened to Ben which it inevitably will be but I like Benjy!

It’s really Ben vs Rupert or Benji vs Rupert because no one will call him Benjamin

SnowdropFox · 18/04/2020 20:17

Benjamin/Benji! Not a huge fan of Rupert myself.

KnobwithaK · 18/04/2020 20:21

Sorry to say this but to my ears Rupert sounds wet. Also the only one I've known was very "Tim nice but dim".

Benjamin on the other hand is one of the nicest boys' names Smile Love Benjy for a child, Ben for a teen and Benjamin for official documents.

Do you like Peter? Or Robert? To my mind they have a similar vibe.

Whatsyourflava · 18/04/2020 20:22

Love both!

Chinchinn · 18/04/2020 20:30

Yes that’s what I would be thinking for Benjamin... Benjamin/Benjy while he’s small, he’s very likely refer to himself as Ben as a teen and Benjamin for his official full name and perhaps as an adult.
I’m aware Rupert is a very marmite name but honestly I’ve always loved it and I struggle with boy names. I also love Casper/Caspar but I worry that’s a bit too “out there”!

I have a Benjamin. Everyone naturally calls him Ben. The full name is great to emphasise when he's being told off to the next level. He will also choose what he's called way earlier than a teen, more like when he's 2/3 years.

I like both but prefer (love) Rupert.

I also think you should reinstate the fabulous Caspar onto your list!

Otherrooms · 18/04/2020 21:36

Ben or Roo?
I'll vote for Roo.

Jossina · 18/04/2020 21:36

I love Rupert. I've known two and neither were "wet" or dim.

Windyatthebeach · 18/04/2020 21:37

Rupert.
Ben is wet and unimaginative..
Imo..

DramaAlpaca · 19/04/2020 00:16

Benjamin for me. I've always disliked Rupert.

JemSynergy · 19/04/2020 00:39

For me...A big no to Rupert.

Groovester · 19/04/2020 00:48

I have a Benjamin. His pals call him Benji. He refused to answer to Ben.

Groovester · 19/04/2020 00:48

Refuses*

iklboo · 19/04/2020 00:57

We have a Benjamin. I don't think we've ever called him by that though

Astronica · 19/04/2020 05:38

Rupert is a favourite name of mine, so easy winner there. So cool, and not over-used. Benjamin is a fine, solid name, but lacks the pizzazz.

Peppafrig · 19/04/2020 05:45

Neither

Enidcat5 · 19/04/2020 05:52

Mine is called Benjamin or Ben. I hate Benji and the one nursery person who started calling him that was told to stop instantly I heard it. I use both Ben and Benjamin interchangeably and he responds to both although calls himself Ben. I love the name and always have.

I'm not a fan of Rupert.

Roselilly36 · 19/04/2020 06:24

Benjamin is lovely, I really don’t like the name Rupert.

BrightonBB · 19/04/2020 06:28

Could you have Benjamin Rupert then you get both.

sneeuw · 19/04/2020 06:56

Benjamin! Not a Rupert.
I like Casper too.

Magicbabywaves · 19/04/2020 07:05

Benedict!

Puppybum · 19/04/2020 07:08

Rigsby in Rising Damp was a rupert and of course there's a little bear in checked trousers, neither are very cool

Anappleaday1 · 19/04/2020 07:17

I have a Benjamin and he always goes by this, or sometimes Benji/Benny at home. He is only 2 so I'm sure he will be a Ben at some point in the future, but right now he doesn't recognise Ben as his name and if anyone calls him this he will firmly reply "I'm Benjamin". I think if you introduce him how you want him to be called then that's what sticks, for small children at least. I also had reservations about the name because I wasn't sure on Ben - nothing wrong with it but it's hard to get excited about! But it's really grown on me and I think he'll grown into Ben as a teen.
It's a good solid choice!
