Any thoughts on these names? Ideally I'd love to hear why you like or dislike them. Also, if there are 5 in your child's nursery approximately where in the country (or elsewhere) that is. Thank you!

Cora or Laura.

There are a million Sophie's and Sophia's around here at primary.
I know a 10 yr old Cora, and several adult Laura's.

SpendAPennyPenny · 13/04/2020 10:01

Is Cora the name of Lady Downton?

I love Laura, Cora is nice too, a bit vintage-chic.

Sophie is lovely but so popular that I don't really hear the nice name, just think it's standard.

87Callista · 13/04/2020 10:14

Fave to least fave:
Laura
Sophie
Cora.

I'm not keen on Cora I instantly thought of both sweetcorn and an apple core.

peperethecat · 13/04/2020 10:29

I think they are all nice names but Laura is my favourite. I think it's a classic name that stands the test of time but which is also quite unusual these days. It's not massively popular today like it was in the 1980s but it doesn't scream 1980s either.

Sophie is obviously very popular but if that doesn't bother you then why not?

One thing which puts me off about Cora is that is sounds a little bit like coronavirus, so if it is for a baby born or conceived during the pandemic it might sound like you've named her after it to be funny.

queenqueenqueen · 13/04/2020 11:41

I like laura, I think it would be very unique nowa days x

MrsClutterbucksbaby · 13/04/2020 11:45

I like Laura as it's a name which everyone will recognise and be able to spell but it will be really unusual in her age group and probably the only one at school whereas Sophie is very popular and Cora seems to be trendy at the moment.

CrocodileFondue · 13/04/2020 11:57

Not so keen on Cora.
Sophie is a nice name but there are so many of them at the moment, it's quite boring.
Laura is making a comeback, I know two small Lauras, it's a classic and quite refreshing these days.

Deadringer · 13/04/2020 12:01

I don't like Cora at all but i can't explain why, its the sound of it i don't like. I also know 2 women in their 60s called Cora, one of whom i dislike, so perhaps that's it. There are loads of Sophies in my dds school, Sophias too, so that would put me off that one. Laura is nice, but maybe just too ordinary? I prefer Lara.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 13/04/2020 12:02
  1. Cora- by a country mile
  2. Sophie
  3. Laura
Mrsjayy · 13/04/2020 12:07

I like Sophie it is a lovely name d2 was maybe going to be a Sophie but a school mum called her baby Sophie first 23 years later im still a bit miffed Blush

allaboardthesinkingship · 13/04/2020 12:09

Shocked that people don't think Cora is popular- I know quite a few little Coras! Sophie or Cora is my choice

cerropotosi · 13/04/2020 12:14

@allaboardthesinkingship whereabouts do you live (approximately) if you don't mind my asking? I've never met a Cora but then I don't know many children Smile

Cora is lovely! I recently found out that DH grandma was Clara (she went by her middle name!) and I LOVE it!

Marahute · 13/04/2020 12:36

I have always loved the name Sophie, but it is VERY popular. We discounted it for DD due to this. It is a beautiful name though. I grew up with a very popular name, so always tried to avoid top 100 names as a personal preference.

I love Cora, definitely not a made up name either. It makes me think of Downton Abbey, but in a good way.

I quite like Laura, but not a name I would personally use. It feels a bit dated to me (I was born in the 80s and went to school with loads of them).

What about Hannah, for a classic name?

missmouse101 · 13/04/2020 12:39

Cora is hideous. A geriatric name and same sound as the kitchen implement, a 'corer'. Laura is gorgeous though OP.

cerropotosi · 13/04/2020 12:41

Thank you all, I really appreciate the input.. not that it makes it any easier to make a decision!

@fifegirl75 do I take it you're in Scotland? I have heard that Cora is quite popular there - not sure why it's more popular in Scotland than England.. (we're in London but DP is Scottish).

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 13/04/2020 12:43

I am Scottish I don't know any Cora's old or young .

cerropotosi · 13/04/2020 12:44

@SE13Mummy interesting to know that there are so many Sophies in SE London.. we're east London and I had always assumed that the diversity around here would mean that "traditional English" names were less well used, but I guess Sophie is popular across a lot of cultures.

cerropotosi · 13/04/2020 12:49

@Typhoonmarie "twee and affected" it does worry me that people might think it comes across like that (personally I think it sounds simple and elegant Grin)

tiredanddangerous · 13/04/2020 12:51

If I had to choose one I’d go with Laura. Sophie is very popular and Cora is quite old lady I think.

AHintOfStyle · 13/04/2020 12:52

I like Laura. I have one, she's 16

I prefer Sophia to Sophie and prefer Cara to Cora

tiredanddangerous · 13/04/2020 12:52

What about Lauren or Lara?

fifegirl75 · 13/04/2020 12:52

@cerropotosi yes am in Scotland. The year my Cora was born there were only 16 born in Scotland that year (2013) but seems to be more popular now. She is at a big primary and there is one other Cora there.

Have seen it on many baby name lists recently so wonder if there might be lots of them soon.

ifowaa · 13/04/2020 12:55

Cora is lovely. Cara / Clara is quite common where I am, but Cora isn't.

cerropotosi · 13/04/2020 12:56

I'm not keen on Lauren (to my ears it sounds less classic and more dated than Laura). DP won't have Lara (he just says "Croft" Hmm).

Cara is nice but I am put off by Delvigne..
