Hi, what do you think of the name Floris? It’s a very common name in the Netherlands, but we are now living for at least a few years in America. Thanks!

If you plan to live in the Netherlands.
If he’d been called that in the UK, his teen nickname would have been Doris.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 10/04/2020 09:22

How old will your son be when you return to the Netherlands OP? If he'll still be pre-school age then go for it as you'll get away wit the name for a baby/toddler but once he's in school he may possibly get teased as it sounds a bit feminine.

IHeartKingThistle · 10/04/2020 09:26

As a teacher I will tell you it's actually really rare to hear of a kid being teased for their name. Kids have no idea whether names are weird or not!

That said, I don't love Floris. Fabian, maybe?

milienhaus · 10/04/2020 09:27

I know a really lovely male French Floris and his name suits him well.

Violet25 · 10/04/2020 09:28

My pain specialist is called Florrie. He’s Irish but is working in Australia. I really like it as a name. I don’t like Floris - a bit too much like florist

ButterflyBitch · 10/04/2020 09:31

Why do people get so turned off and “disgusted” by names from other countries?
The op is asking a predominately British site? I know there are people from different countries on here but it’s mainly British. So that’s the opinion that’s gonna come up most. In the U.K. it isn’t a good name.

bitheby · 10/04/2020 09:42

I think the Brits, of which I am one, are inherently racist and prejudiced. This thread has made me angry.

OP, call your baby what you like. And ignore all the judgmental buggers.

VenusClapTrap · 10/04/2020 11:23

What @bitheby said.

There are children with an array of international names at my dc’s state school and none of them get bullied for their names, no matter how apparently feminine Hmm. Even Oberon - nobody has ever mentioned the king of the fairies to him. It just doesn’t happen.

It didn’t happen when I was growing up in an unenlightened northern industrial town either - occasionally Marcus would get called Mucus, but it was very much occasionally and certainly wasn’t bullying. Mild teasing maybe.

tiredanddangerous · 10/04/2020 11:44

I actually think it’s lovely. I think it’s quite a feminine sounding name though and probably would be to most in the U.K.

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 10/04/2020 13:04

@bitheby Karol is a Polish name, the equivalent in English is Charles. I’m guessing both of his parents were Polish.

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 10/04/2020 13:05

Oh and @bitheby, just because someone doesn’t like a name, it doesn’t make them racist. I’m of Polish descent but think Karol for a boy if born and raised in England is a silly choice.

Charlieiscool · 10/04/2020 13:06

It will be useful if he wants to trans. He might prefer Florence.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/04/2020 13:15

Floris is the name of one of my favourite perfumes.

mummmy2017 · 10/04/2020 13:15

I read is as Florist. And was wondering why you would call a child a Florist, as in flower shop.

Buttercup54321 · 12/04/2020 00:40

Sounds pretty and girly.

Pawsin · 14/04/2020 14:00

I know a little boy called Floris (in the UK), and I love it. He's a very "cool" little boy and so carries it off well! Not had any problems from what I know
