Just throwing this one out there, what do you think of Pip for a boy? (Not Phillip)

I think it may not be a name he wants after the age of 10. You could just use it as a family nick name substitute for any other name though.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 06/04/2020 09:40

I don't think it works as a whole name, makes me think of apple pips. It could plausibly be short for any name starting with P though, if you don't like Philip.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 06/04/2020 09:48

Did you notice you had to write "(not Philip)" after it, OP?

He'll be doing that for the rest of his life.

Apart from that - you're naming a potential adult human, not a pet. It sounds so inconsequential, as if you never expect him to take up any space in the world, even on his own birth certificate.

I can only think of two I've heard of: the male protagonist of Great Expectations and a major female character in The Archers. Their proper names are respectively Philip and Philippa.

nameaholic · 06/04/2020 09:53

@perditaprovokesenmity I have to agree with you! I do love both Phillip and Philippa and would opt for the full names if using. Was curious to hear people's views having heard the name mentioned on TV this morning

Love it (but only as a derivation of Philip or Phillipa)
I wouldn't hesitate

KateF · 06/04/2020 09:59

I have one but she's a Philippa. I wouldn't have used Pip as her full name. I also know a Philip who was Pip as a little boy but has dropped it as an older teen.

miccymaccy · 06/04/2020 10:09

Cute on a kid, cringe on an adult

ps1991 · 06/04/2020 10:12

I like it. My husband is a Ben not Benjamin and he spends a lot of time saying ‘not Benjamin’ wen dealing with businesses etc. But it’s not a huge problem.

Shockers · 06/04/2020 10:16

Cute on a kid, cringe on an adult

It’s my name - nobody calls me by my full name... 😬

Whatsyourflava · 06/04/2020 11:35

I like it - prefer a P name like Percy though

PretzelVanderspling · 06/04/2020 11:37

I know a Pip. It’s short for Pippin.

OuterMongolia · 06/04/2020 11:39

I love Pip but would expect it to be for a girl (as an alternative to Pippa).

Almondsincake · 06/04/2020 13:45

Pip is something you take out of fruit.
Of all the names out there this is pretty unimaginative and dull.

HavenDilemma · 06/04/2020 15:26

Just makes me think of PIP - Personal Independence Payment which has replaced DLA

daffodilrosedaisy · 06/04/2020 15:30

Pip was my childhood best friends hamster’s name in primary school!

Shockers · 06/04/2020 15:31

Perspective is a funny thing- I’d see it as what the fruit grew from... but I’m biased Wink.

LargeGinOnTap · 06/04/2020 16:16

There's a Philippa in my family and she was always Philippa until recently as an adult that she's started to go by Pippa or Pip but even then not all the time

SoleBizzz · 06/04/2020 16:34

I preferred DLA much easier

Jossina · 06/04/2020 17:32

Only as a nickname. It doesn't even need to be a nickname for Philip/a. It can really be for anything.

Bezalelle · 06/04/2020 18:01

Pip is great.

Both Philip and Philippa sound like a wet fish flopping around on a wet wharf.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 06/04/2020 18:04

When I saw the title I immediately thought of personal Independant payment.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/04/2020 18:08

No sounds like a benefit.

NoLongerAnEasyTarget · 06/04/2020 18:10

Oooh I love Pipin.

heanix · 06/04/2020 18:10

I once worked on a cruise in France and another girl who worked alongside me was called Pippa. This caused a lot of sniggering amongst the French crew as ‘pipe’ (pronounced ‘pip’) is slang for oral sex in French. Just so you know...

Lllot5 · 06/04/2020 18:12

I like it. But then great expectations is one of my favourite books
