Hello,
I am new here and hoping you lovely people can help. Only 5 weeks to go till baby is due and he is still without a name at this rate he won't have one when he's born. We've been umming and ahhring over names for ages and just can't seem to find one we both like. OH likes Thomas which ticks all the boxes (classic, normal, not too linked to one particular famous person) but I think it's a bit dull. We also keep coming back to Isaac but it's niggling me that I don't like it enough. Another thought is Arthur but our surname is Wall, here's my question... if you heard Arthur Wall would you giggle and think '" 'alf-a-wall"? This sounds ridiculous as I write it but opinions please?

My immediate thought was not 'half a wall'.

It was 'off the wall'. Sorry Blush

Thomas and Isaac are great!

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 02/04/2020 08:17

Not keen on Arthur Wall, he sounds like a character in an Edwardian comic novel.

Thomas is nice. Or in the same vein...James? William?

Isaac is excellent. I'd use that.

Hepzibar · 02/04/2020 08:32

Isaac is my favourite out of those three. A good name, won't date, and not too popular.

Whatsyourflava · 02/04/2020 08:45

I like all your choices , Thomas Isaac and Arthur are all really lovely and I think work fine with your surname

Suggestions:
Peter
Christopher nn Kit
Sidney nn Sid
Barnaby nn Barns or Barney
Wilf

Astronica · 02/04/2020 08:53

I wouldn't have thought of the problem with Arthur but now you've said it I can't get ' alf a wall' out of my head, so I'd have to rule out Arthur. I like both Thomas and Isaac but Thomas is the easy winner for me.

Other ideas to fit your criteria:

Edmund
Nicholas/Nico
Angus
Oscar
Toby
Louis
Patrick
David
Alec
Joel
Jonathan
Rufus

Mummywall · 02/04/2020 09:06

Thanks for the replies, a friend said 'alf a wall' to us and I haven't been able to forget it. I really like Toby, William, Peter and James but the OH is not keen (I have vetoed plenty of his suggestions too). Glad Thomas and Isaac are going down well.

Thomas is a good solid name.

Alternatives:
Samuel
Daniel
Benjamin
Robert
Alexander
Frederick

Isadora2007 · 02/04/2020 09:14

Not Joel wall either @Astronica surely?

I would go for a double or triple syllable name with a single syllable surname.

Isaac is nice- and not very common but not an “out there” name. Go for that @mummywall

50but17inside · 02/04/2020 09:17

Marcus
Sebastian
Christopher (Kit)

PixieN · 02/04/2020 09:18

I wouldn’t be able to be stop hearing ‘Alf a wall’ either so definitely wouldn’t pick that. Our name choice for a boy was Adam James (we’re having a girl). I quite like AJ for short. Also like Adam Thomas.

Bloomburger · 02/04/2020 09:18

What about Elliot? I don't know any Elliots (it's DSs middle name as it rhymes with his sisters name so thought it would be stupid as a first name for our family).

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/04/2020 09:23

In a similar situation with our fourth baby. We had run out of names. We waiting until after she was born and after seeing her in person, we both knew exactly what name suited her. Just suggesting that you can wait until you meet him and have him in your arms.

emmathedilemma · 02/04/2020 09:51

Thomas or Isaac are good. I'm not sure Isaac would get shortened but Thomas could be Tom if you're happy with that?
I don't think you could use William or Wilfred as Will Wall or Wilf Wall aren't great!

Mummywall · 02/04/2020 09:57

Really like Frederick with Freddie for short but we have a close friend with a child called that, actually similar for several good names. It shouldn't put us off but does. Isaac is the front runner at the moment but I'm definitely open to other names when we see him. Just want a name in place before OH has to leave the hospital as the visiting restrictions are pretty tight at the moment (for good reason).

It doesn't matter if you haven't settled on a name before he is born, you have a short list, see what suits him when you meet him.

Mummywall · 02/04/2020 10:01

Lol yes that is another thing, love William but William Wall sounds very historical (can imagine a battle of William Wall in a history text book somewhere) and Will Wall sounds too much like Millwall. Probably putting too much thought into this.

NetballHoop · 02/04/2020 10:08

Not William for me. I bet he'd be known as Willie Wall at school.

Eddie Wall sounds pretty cool.

Charis1503 · 02/04/2020 10:10

Issac is the best of the 3. Thomas is nice but I fear a little boring.

Joshua, Ellis, Tobias, Oscar, Matthew, Daniel?

champagneandfromage50 · 02/04/2020 10:13

Wi ty a surname Wall I would opt for a slightly different first name-

Tobias
Henry
Lucas
Sebastian
Hugo
Ewan
Gregory

TobyeBella · 02/04/2020 10:14

I have a nearly 4 year old Thomas so I'm biased. Never meet another one his age, suits him as a baby into adult hood, unoffensive nicknames even though he's still Thomas now, everyone knows how to say and spell it.

I do like Issac, Arthur is ok but it would bother me if people couldn't say their 'th' and he'd been 'Arfur'.

Standrewsschool · 02/04/2020 10:14

Zachary has an alternative to Isaac?

Also
Jacob
Nathaniel
Luke
Oliver

Saladfingers95 · 02/04/2020 10:18

I think Isaac is lovely

Bienentrinkwasser · 02/04/2020 10:26

I was going to suggest Zachary too. I like Isaac though.

dottiedodah · 02/04/2020 10:26

I like Issac as well .Nathaniel or Alexander too ? what about Oliver or Dominic .My DS was born and we only decided there and then on his name!

Detectoristnotmetaldetector · 02/04/2020 10:28

How about Benedict, Douglas, Alexander or Cameron. Wall is a cool surname!
