Hello,
I am new here and hoping you lovely people can help. Only 5 weeks to go till baby is due and he is still without a name at this rate he won't have one when he's born. We've been umming and ahhring over names for ages and just can't seem to find one we both like. OH likes Thomas which ticks all the boxes (classic, normal, not too linked to one particular famous person) but I think it's a bit dull. We also keep coming back to Isaac but it's niggling me that I don't like it enough. Another thought is Arthur but our surname is Wall, here's my question... if you heard Arthur Wall would you giggle and think '" 'alf-a-wall"? This sounds ridiculous as I write it but opinions please?

Love thomas and Isaac
William Wall actually sounds so cool!

Mummywall · 02/04/2020 10:37

champagneandfromage50 Henry was always my first choice for a boy and we used it with our first, along with our second favourite name of George. Also love Toby and Hugo but (Hugo is another close family friend same age as Henry) and OH thinks a Toby would be nicknamed 'Toby jug', I did tell him that nobody knows what toby hugs even are anymore but he won't budge. I do think we're both being a bit silly over our reasoning!

We chose Thomas for our little boy. But we call him Tommy, Tom or Tom Tom. Classic name.
We also liked Leo, River, Joseph, Arlo. Bit of a mixture Smile

Max Wall was a comedian.

I'd go for a shortish name with quite a strong vibe. Max would be a good one but older relatives might disagree.
I prefer Tom to Isaac.

Onthehamsterwheel · 02/04/2020 19:16

Love Thomas, but with Wall the associations with sausages would make me unsure.

peajotter · 02/04/2020 19:20

We picked all of ours from a shortlist at the hospital. I found it easier that way.

Good call on Arthur. One of my rules is to imagine a 7yo wanting to tease or wind up the child. We rejected a favourite name for this reason.

BrooHaHa · 02/04/2020 19:25

Don't panic. Mine didn't have a name for two weeks after birth and it was all fine. The name we eventually settled on wasn't even on our shortlist. Nothing wrong with waiting until after birth to see what you think fits.

speakout · 02/04/2020 19:30

I could not imagine choosing a name for my baby before birth.
I wanted to meet, get to know their little characters before choosing.
I had lists for sure, but the eventual names were not even on the lists when we chose.
My DD was 2 weeks old before we decided- an name we had not even thought of but suited her character.

You have plenty time.

I wouldn't want to choose a name for a little person I had not even met yet.

Strongly dislike Isaac, always have as I hate the way it sounds. I-Sack. Thomas is a great name, very lovely. Arthur is lovely as well, though there seems to be a lot of people using this name now? Know a couple babies this year with this name already.

Other names:
Theodore Hall >Theo Hall
Frederick Hall >Fred Hall (not a fan of this nick)
Steven Hall > Steve Hall

Mummywall · 02/04/2020 22:14

Thanks for the suggestions it definitely helps. Happy to see a lot of positive reactions to the names we're already considering. OH is reconsidering some of the ones he vetoed already too so hopefully baby will have a name before or not long after he arrives. Smile

Slow down, OP. You have until you register him! We didn’t finally decide till we were on the Overground to the registry office when he was six weeks or more. I think it always takes weeks to stop calling them by whatever name you used during the pregnancy, anyway.

CruCru · 02/04/2020 22:25

Both Thomas and Isaac are really nice names.
