Thoughts on the name Rupert? My husband loves it.

My DS was called Rupert for 2 days, then we changed it. Loved the name it just didn't suit him.

usernameusernames · 01/04/2020 09:35

I actually like Tarquin too - maybe it's posh names I'm into ha! Hugo gives me the opposite feeling now as it's so popular around here. But it is a beautiful name

Typical posh boy name

Almondsincake · 01/04/2020 11:06

I hate it, sorry. I find it drippy and wet.
"Ru" is not particularly nice sound and "pert" is even worse.

I knew one guy who called himself Ruru...possible one of the worst people I've ever met

OnABeachSomewhere · 01/04/2020 11:08

All the Ruperts I've met have been on the pretentious side.

bruffin · 01/04/2020 11:14

The only Rupert I know is a huge night club bouncer, no pretensions at all. Met him in the sauna at the gym

usernameusernames · 01/04/2020 11:18

For those that don't like Rupert, what would your suggestions be for an alternative that isn't wet sounding, just out of interest? Thanks for all your comments so far!

The Rupert I know is a mahoosive very down to earth rugby player, so I guess I don't associate it with wet or pretentious.

Rufus is the obvious alternative, and also a good name.

Whatsyourflava · 01/04/2020 11:32

@usernameusernames

I love love love Rupert
Here are some alternatives that I think are similar but I’d stick with Rupert

Barnaby nn Barns or Barney
Sidney nn Sid
Christopher nn Kit
Laurence nn Laurie
Clarence
Wilfred nn Wilf
Ellis
Rudi/Rudy
Miles
Marley

The only child Rupert I've met recently was when his mum was screeching his name across Poundland. She alternated Rupert with Rupops, which was amazing when she looked and sounded like she'd glass you in a Wetherspoons if she thought you'd looked at her funny.

Before that the only Ruperts I'd met were posh and a bit wet. This Rupops was straight out of Shameless. Amazing juxtaposition

WingingItSince1973 · 01/04/2020 17:10

My 4 year old grandson is called Rupert. We love it. Hated it years ago but he so suits it xx

Handbaghag · 01/04/2020 17:13

Depends on your age I reckon. You say Rupert, I complete the phrase by saying '..the bear'. Always has seemed posh and pretentious but that's just my experience if Ruperts...

usernameusernames · 01/04/2020 17:15

@Handbaghag I know what you mean! Rupert the bear was just slightly before our time so I wasn't familiar with it.

@CantStandMeow that's made me laugh! I usually hear names like "Diesel" being shouted around here Confused

This did make me laugh...

mindproject · 01/04/2020 17:20

It's ridiculous. Most people will make fun of it.

Whatsyourflava · 01/04/2020 17:25

@mindproject yeh sure 🤣

ProperVexed · 01/04/2020 17:36

Lovely name. Was in my list but vetoed by DH.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 01/04/2020 20:19

I love it.

It manages to be both cute for a little boy and a proper name for an adult.

Lots of lovely baby nicknames you could use when he's little: RooRoo, Roops, Roopydoopyloops. Roomoo, Moomoo, Rooschmoo...
But that's probably just me Blush I love the cute baby play with names when they're tiny!

percheron67 · 01/04/2020 20:24

Love it.

LetItGoHome · 01/04/2020 22:23

I like it. How about Wilbur? It has a similar feel but I prefer it.

MamaToAliandHar · 02/04/2020 01:40

Love it !!

HathorX · 02/04/2020 04:27

I love it. I've only ever had one friend called Rupert, at uni. He was really posh, but so attractive, outgoing, ace rugby player, extremely fit. Be aware the lads all called him Roop, it's an easy nickname and sticks.

Go for it.

Patsypie · 02/04/2020 04:41

I hate his trousers!

Jossina · 02/04/2020 04:43

Ever since Rupert Giles I've loved it.
