Names that are too cutesy/weird for anyone living in the real world

I love love love babyish and cute girl names like:

  • Sissy
  • Kitty
  • Bunny

but the incredible teasing of being a child with a name like that, in your typical school, must be awful. What are names you know you could never use?

My parents used to know a couple whose daughter was named Smile. She had a popular classic name for her middle name. Think Smile Sophie. Her parents told my Mum the middle name was in case she sued them when she grew up!

I also know a family who re-used the same first name as a middle name - their children were Katie Katie, Lucy Lucy and Tommy Tommy*.

*names changed, but you get the idea.

I'm not a big fan of Maisie, Betsy etc. Elisabeth known as Betsy is different as she can be Elisabeth, Liz, Eliza, Lisa, Libby, Beth etc. when older.

‘Cutesy’ is culturally relative, too, to an extent — I know a ferociously driven, rather frightening Pinky, which I gather is a standard enough Hindi name.

@ellanwood - was that her real name though? I know the French don’t have to stick to saints’ names anymore, but they can’t use names which might be detrimental to the child, and I’d have thought “Framboise” might be a step too far.

@Ritascornershop - I'm not sure. She was an actress, so maybe she changed it to stand out.

@ellanwood My son goes to school with a Wolfie. Not short for anything, just Wolfie Smile

ellanwood · 26/03/2020 13:44

@Ohwhatbliss - that's quite out there. But I do secretly love it.

Loveday is a name that is used in Cornwall. Lowdy is supposed to be a form of it.
