Names that are too cutesy/weird for anyone living in the real world

I love love love babyish and cute girl names like:

  • Sissy
  • Kitty
  • Bunny

but the incredible teasing of being a child with a name like that, in your typical school, must be awful. What are names you know you could never use?

I knew a Loveday. Don't know if she was teased but her brother in my class was bullied really badly by the other boys because of her name.

I love the Anglo-Saxon name Wulfric which would be Wolfie for short but you just couldn't.

TheWitchCirce · 24/03/2020 10:39

Cupcake Brown is an absolutely extraordinary woman, a lawyer and a writer.

Allthebears · 24/03/2020 10:45

Nicole Appleton has just named her daughter Skipper. I'm torn between thinking it's ridiculous and secretly really liking it! (childhood Barbie fan!). Think only a celeb child could get away with it though irl.

Whydoesit · 24/03/2020 10:45

Oh I love the name Kitty!

It would absolutely be a nickname for Catherine for me. A fantastic name to have.

Whydoesit · 24/03/2020 10:48

@Allthebears I know but she’s not even that famous is she? We know who she is but she’s hardly going to be someone our kids know about. Also I imagine she’s fairly wealthy but not rich enough a la Beckhams for her children never to worry about working which is often the justification for having a weird name.
Also like you though I can’t help but find the name quite cute! I like Skipper, Sailor and Scout but would never use them.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 24/03/2020 10:54

Teddy - I like it but could never use it.

DoctorBambino · 24/03/2020 11:33

Blossom, Blousey (as in Brown... Bugsy Malone), Alfalfa

PNomintrude · 24/03/2020 11:34

Lettice. I love it, but just couldn't do that to a child.

ICouldHaveDancedAllNight · 24/03/2020 11:56

@DoctorBambino BLOUSEY!! Yes!

TotesGodsWill · 24/03/2020 18:36

Buddy
Sonny
Junior
Teddy (As a stand alone name)

Pixie
Tinkerbell
Blossom
Honey

I do quite like Kitty as a nickname for Catherine but not on its own

I've met a Topsy, Tallulah, Raspberry, Dolly, Mimi and Tiggy. I really love Tiggy. The others are not for me but I rather prefer them to samey trendy names.

AvonBarksdale99 · 24/03/2020 18:49

I think Daisy is fine

I love the name Glisten Grin

OhTheRoses · 24/03/2020 18:57

Plum. I have never fully recovered from hearing a child called that in the park.

Have never been a Flora fan but oddly I like Poppy.

BetelgeuseIsOrionsArmpit · 24/03/2020 19:36

A family member named their DD Misty. To me that sounds like a name for a pet.
I did have a Great Aunt Fanny, which my Dbro and I thought was hilarious

HowIrresponsible · 24/03/2020 19:36

Teddy

Micah · 24/03/2020 19:41

That's you though @Awwlookatmybabyspider*.
Mean kids and bullies will not hold back*

Ime kids don’t bat an eyelid.

It’s when they go home, talk about their friend dotty, the adults take the piss, and the child carries that back into school.

If adults held their tongues there wouldn’t be half as much bullying.

SallyWD · 24/03/2020 19:43

I'm really sorry if I offend anyone but I find Betsy far too cutesy. Also Maisy.

What's wrong with Daisy ? I like Poppy too. And love love love Tabby, short for Tabitha

CastleSalem · 25/03/2020 02:06

@OhTheRoses, the (extremely posh) Plum I know is Mirabelle on her birth certificate (ie. a plum variety), but known as Plum to the family.

Honestly, I’d prefer half the names mentioned over the ploddingly inevitable Oliver, Olivia, Sophie etc.

I met a very impressive adult Rivendell the other day.

Standrewsschool · 25/03/2020 02:26

Met a Tulip once, a tv correspondent.

Wulfric is ultra cool.

TorchesTorches · 25/03/2020 02:39

My MP is Tulip! I dont think of it as cutesy!

I think of names like Ella, Amy, Mia as cutesy, but this is just a matter of taste.

Ritascornershop · 25/03/2020 02:44

Daisy and Juniper don’t seem cutesy to me. Tinkerbell is a step too far and Cupcake is just weird. Ditto Sailor, Skipper - I do not get the appeal. I do love Plum, the sound of it, but raspberry is a no from me (partly because “blowing a raspberry” is not great, innuendo-wise and because it’s not very elegant and germy).

ellanwood · 25/03/2020 19:39

@Standrewsschool
Wulfric is ultra cool.

I made the mistake of telling DS that was a name I loved for him but didn't have the guts to give him. He was gutted and loves it and has told me more than once he's changing his name when he leaves home! Grin

ellanwood · 25/03/2020 19:41

@Ritascornershop - I knew a French woman called Framboise (raspberry). She was super-cool.
