Camilla or Effie?

DH and I have a list of 4 names, one is my favourite (Jemima) but he isn't keen, one is his favourite but I'm not keen (it's Alexa...poor kid living in a technological future with a name that will spark up home automation everywhere she goes!! Hmm) and then we have 2 that we both like and probably will end up going for one or the other.

So which of them do you prefer - Camilla (nicknames either Cami or Millie) or Effie?

If Effie would you use Effie as the full name or as a nickname and if a nickname any ideas on what the full name could be (not keen on Elizabeth or Euphemia)?

Middle names Violet Alice after family members if that makes a difference Smile

Love Effie and would use that as full name. Don't like Camilla at all but really like Cami and Millie.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 23/03/2020 16:13

The double f in Effie reminds me of swearwords.

Camilla reminds me of "calm" (as well as Parker-Bowles)and it is pretty.

Have you thought about Beth?

maa1992 · 23/03/2020 16:15

I like camilla, not so keen on Effie

Peachbubble · 23/03/2020 16:16

I'd choose Camilla

bb2605 · 23/03/2020 16:19

Thanks everyone - @Wheresthebiffer2 not keen on Beth and have a friend called Beth as well so wouldn't use that but thanks for the suggestion!

I was thinking about Evette or Evelyn as a longer version of Effie - does that work or not really? Evelyn is sooooo common at the moment though it really puts me off even though I love the name :-(

Camilla.

Toolonglurking · 23/03/2020 16:37

Effie! I've got one. It can be short for anything you like, we picked a more formal name for her official first name but as she gets older and we get to know her better she a total 'effie'

FrownPrincess · 23/03/2020 16:45

Camilla is lovely.

Not keen on Effie, but if you do choose that, FGS don’t use Nell as a middle name ... Wink

Prepenultimate · 23/03/2020 16:45

Prefer Camilla

bonboncherrybon · 23/03/2020 16:46

Camilla is better than Effie
Evelyn vs Camilla- Evelyn wins every time

Lynda07 · 23/03/2020 16:50

Effie is a diminutive of Euphemia. Effie is horrible!

Camilla is good. So is Cosima.

Agree with you about Alexa, a manufactured name from many years ago. I do know a couple who called their daughter, "Alexa", she must be pushing forty now. Alexandra is nice, Alex for short.

'Beth' is short for Elizabeth and, I suppose, Bethany. I like both those names.

Jemima puts me in mind of a duck or a fictional female detective, I don't care for it.

Up to you though.

RaininSummer · 23/03/2020 17:02

Like Maa, I think f word when I hear Effie. Or someone saying f-ing this and f-ing that.

LexiM · 23/03/2020 17:28

I like Effie more but I think they are very different names so people will have a preference between the two.

My name is Alexa, it is annoying that they named the device it, although doesn’t affect me day to day as we don’t have one. I can however see why it’s put people off using it!

bb2605 · 23/03/2020 17:31

@FrownPrincess hahaha we won't use Nell as a middle name I promise - chatting with DH just now and he isn't keen on any of the longer versions for Effie and I think we made a decision that if we use it we need to just accept that she will go through life with people asking 'what is that short for?' - leaning towards Camilla as a result, I know a lovely Camille whose name was always shortened to Cami and I love that, not fussed about her being referred to as Millie either that's quite cute and both Cami and Millie go nicely with our surname which is a single syllable name. Camilla Violet Alice all seem to go well together too - they seem to be from a similar group of names whereas Effie appears to be a bit more out there and I'm not sure goes as well with the middle names. Hmmmm some deciding to do!! Thanks everyone for the input though!

@LexiM I don't have anything against the name in itself in fact if it weren't for Amazon Alexa I think I would be fine with it and I especially like the possible nickname Ally (I'm a bit of a fan of A Star is Born haha) and Lexi it's just I can't get it out of my head and my friend's husband is called Alex and they have a home device and she says even with his name it does often get confused.

You're definitely right about them being totally different names - Effie is a 'cool girl' name I think because I associate it with the character from Skins whereas Camilla is more traditional so totally agree that people will likely have strong preferences towards one or the other.

Camilla! I love Jemima and Alexa too. Both are on my list but DH doesn’t like either.

strawberry2017 · 23/03/2020 17:41

Effie doesn't sound like a full name it sounds more of a nickname to me.
I think I prefer Camilla

villainousbroodmare · 23/03/2020 17:43

Camilla for sure. Elegant. Effie is just... anything but.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 23/03/2020 17:43

No to Effie. It immediately made me think of Mrs Doubtfire: "Winston's idea of foreplay was "Effie, brace yourself. " Shock

MikeUniformMike · 23/03/2020 18:11

Effie could be short for Effinelle. Beautiful name that is an expression of admiration or surprise.

Cami will be Cami-knickers. The Camillas I know are Cam or Camel, and hate Cammy.

DramaAlpaca · 23/03/2020 18:14

Grin at Mike & Effinelle.

I like Camilla.

Effie sounds like the sound my dog makes when she sneezes.

Wineislifex · 23/03/2020 18:18

Love Effie
I prefer cami to milly as that name is really common now!

PussyWillowPeach · 23/03/2020 18:18

Effie Violet Alice is very sweet.

Not a fan of Camilla personally, sounds like an old persons name.

MikeUniformMike · 23/03/2020 18:19

Grin Bless you DramaDog.
