I really adore the name Luna but it was also the name of my in laws dog who passed away last week... Would you still use it?

No

DramaAlpaca · 21/03/2020 23:27

In those circumstances, no.

Dyra · 21/03/2020 23:39

Sorry but no. It would always seem you named your daughter after the dog.

Pinkypink · 21/03/2020 23:44

Another no, sorry

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 21/03/2020 23:46

Pity, nice name but no

OhTheRoses · 21/03/2020 23:49

No, don't be silly.

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2020 00:01

Yes, if it's your favourite name.

I'm sure the dead dog will always be remembered, but once the baby arrives and it's her name it will just be her name. That will be the association for everyone.

Stillamum3 · 22/03/2020 00:16

Just a suggestion "Lorena" the name of a girl in a beautiful song popular during the American Civil War. Apparently it was popular with both sides. It was in the film "The Beguiled" and I thought it was lovely.

Bezalelle · 22/03/2020 08:40

Even if if wasn't the dog's name, I wouldn't use it. Sounds like "loony". I've never understood the popularity of this name.

CalleighDoodle · 22/03/2020 08:41

No. And also it is a crap name. Lunatic.

AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings · 22/03/2020 09:20

I would. Only your PIL will think of the dog after a while

erised · 22/03/2020 09:42

Thank you to the people who responded with constructive comments.

To the others, learn some damn manners.

It depends on your relationship with them really. They might think it's really sweet, and that you are honouring the dogs memory? Were you very close to them/ the dog? You should probably ask them what they think, there's a chance they could find it bizarre you've chosen the name of their deceased dog when there are thousands of other lovely names to choose from.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/03/2020 09:51

Why would you even contemplate it?

userabcname · 22/03/2020 09:56

No I wouldn't. Had the same dilemma when naming DS1 - the IL's dog has my absolute favourite boys name ever! But just couldn't bring myself to use it.

Whatsyourflava · 22/03/2020 10:01

Yes I’d definitely still use it. I don’t see a problem? Maybe just warn your in laws and ask if it’s ok? I bet they’ll actually love that the name is being carried on- I would!

Luna is a lovely choice by the way

Whatsyourflava · 22/03/2020 10:02

I don’t understand why it’s a definite no from some people? If I had a family member use my old dogs name I’d actually be really touched and happy I get to still hear the name all the time

Eleanorrrelephant · 22/03/2020 10:32

I’d use it- in fact I did use the name of a family dog for my DS! Undoubtedly most people on this site would hate the name so I don’t want to say it but I would happily do it again! The child will (hopefully/presumably) outlive any dog by many many many many years so why not!

@CalleighDoodle you’re so fucking rude, good luck ever finding someone who wants to have a baby with you...

Eleanor How unbelievably childish. Honestly. What a stupid comment. Grin

ScarlettBlaize · 22/03/2020 10:54

It's a dog's name regardless of whether or not you know a particular dog with that name.

ThinkPinkStink · 22/03/2020 10:56

How about Nova?

Similar celestial nature and sound, means 'new', and I think most people would have forgotten their first boyfriend's Vauxhall Nova (circa 1996) by the time she is nursery age.

ThinkPinkStink · 22/03/2020 10:58

The shortening of DD's name is the same as DH's childhood dog. But 27 years had passed before we used it.

DuesToTheDirt · 22/03/2020 11:06

I know 2 children who have been named after favourite horses (who had normal people names). Don't see the problem really.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/03/2020 11:10

Eleanorrrelephant REALLY.

Is that the kind of example you want to set for your son, Rover? How rude Grin

FizzyGreenWater · 22/03/2020 11:11

Oh and OP -

To the others, learn some damn manners.

The very point of baby names is to get straight answers. Because when it comes to naming babies, people you actually know won't give you that.

Hence the very straight answers!

I'd probably find another name. I do quite like Luna though. How about Lola?
