I really adore the name Luna but it was also the name of my in laws dog who passed away last week... Would you still use it?

No I wouldn't use it.

You asked people for their opinion and then told them to learn some damn manners when they expressed it Confused

FizzyGreenWater · 22/03/2020 11:12

Or Rovetta of course Grin

playthestation · 22/03/2020 11:12

Definitely not. I find it more bizarre that you would have used it if the dog were alive though.

playthestation · 22/03/2020 11:14

I don’t understand why it’s a definite no from some people?

Because we all hold different opinions

If I had a family member use my old dogs name I’d actually be really touched and happy I get to still hear the name all the time

Again, not everyone feels the same. It's ok for people to think differently.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 22/03/2020 11:20

I love when people come to the BABY NAME board and ask for opinions and then get ratty when said opinions aren’t the right ones.

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2020 11:25

The OP didn't ask for opinions of the name itself.

She asked re. the dead dog.

So comments like 'it's a crap name' are uncalled for. It was a yes/no on the dead dog. Not 'do you like the name Luna?'

TerribleCustomerCervix · 22/03/2020 11:50

Again, it’s the baby name board. The whole premise of this part of the site is to discuss baby names. People will give their opinions whether they’re asked for or not.

I’m sure most of us on here have seen at least one post knocking one of their dc’s names over the time they’ve been posting, I know I have.

user1493494961 · 22/03/2020 11:52

Awful name anyway but no.

user1493494961 · 22/03/2020 11:53

:-)

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2020 12:08

Sure, people will give their opinions asked for or not.

And other people will object to those opinions for being too mean/uncalled for.

If we have to accept that nasty comments are inevitable (which we don't btw! It is actually possible to be polite even on a baby name board!) then we also have to accept the people objecting to the nasty comments. One follows the other!

Lalotai47 · 22/03/2020 13:47

I love the name but I have met ALOT of dogs named Luna in recent years. And many were quite naughty!

Whatsyourflava · 22/03/2020 15:09

Luna is a great name. I’d definitely use it still

CaffiSaliMali · 22/03/2020 15:21

I wouldn't OP, especially as the dog has only just died, and is a close family member's dog. Also, would you use it if the dog wasn't dead?

If you like Luna how about Lyra, Nova, Mara or Seren?

RollerCoasterProteinSpill · 22/03/2020 15:29

I wouldnt.
How about Lana?
Layna, Lena, Lula?

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 22/03/2020 15:32

Not sure how pregnant you are, or even if you are, but could you wait a respectful amount of time and speak to in laws about it if it would upset them?

Spied · 22/03/2020 15:35

I'd use it.
If a close family member wanted to name their child a dead pets name I'd have no issue.

sunshinemachine · 22/03/2020 15:36

i wouldnt use it

Whatsyourflava · 22/03/2020 16:11

I think you should run the idea past them. I bet they won’t mind at all and infact might be really touched and pleased you’ve picked the name Luna

MikeUniformMike · 22/03/2020 17:37

If you like the name, use it, but it is a bit too close to loony, and very HP.

The comments on here will be what people will be thinking while they say "Oh that's lovely!" to your face.

The fact that your PIL named their dog by that name should tell you something.

Mumtoaterribletwo · 22/03/2020 17:40

People still comment that my mum was named after a family dog and she's 60! So I would say probably a no.

Staffori · 22/03/2020 17:41

I'd start by asking myself how I'd feel if it were my pet that had died and MY answer would be that I wouldn't mind at all. Of course, everyone's different but if you give your pet a human name rather than Rover or Tiddles, I honestly don't see why you'd object if someone close to you chooses to give that name to a baby human.
