“Strong”/ unisex girls names

aprilfools19 · 01/03/2020 11:49

Some that I like are

Alexandra shortened time Alex or Andi
Helena shortened to Lenny
Dylan
Juliet (obviously not unisex but I think it’s strong sounding)
Brynn
Theo
Edie
Ellen

I tend to shy away from frilly very “girly” names as they tend to only suit girly girls. Can you imagine Ellen Degeners or Cate Blanchett or evening someone like Michelle Obama being called Poppy or Daisy? (Nothing wrong with those names- lovely names but I want something that’s more adaptable to all personality types).

Alexandra shortened time Alex or Andi - fine but not Andi.
Helena shortened to Lenny - ok
Dylan - awful
Juliet - not strong-sounding
Brynn - misspelt somewhat dated boy's name
Theo - she'll be Theo Surname in a class of several Theo Surnames.
Edie - ok
Ellen - ok

You have mentioned Ellen and Helena, so I suggest Nell. Not too girly, nice and would suit a strong girl or woman.

I am the same with girls names. Tend to veer away from the frilly sounding ones with lots of syllables. Some of my favourites (not all unisex but with 'strong' vibes are:

Neve
Sylive
Vera
Mattie
Roma
Bay
Agnes
Pearl
Alba
Ionie
Mieke
Vita

I used to work with a doctor called Barbie.

She was a very strong female & although I suppose you could laugh at her 'frilly' name she owned it & was very well respected.

I don't like the idea that male names are 'strong' & female 'frilly' names are weak.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone asking for male names that could be unisex.

I have a "boys" name. I've never really thought much of it, and it doesn't get commented on at all really.

I was a brownie leader and one point we had a Dylan, a Cameron and a Finley - I think there was a fourth one with a boy’s unisex name but can’t remember now.

I have to disagree with a PP though, I have a DD with a -ie ending name and she’s STEM lead at her school and a footballer. There’s a Lily, an Evie, an Amy, an Izzy in her team too - and in most other teams of that age group in the league to be honest. She likes crafts and she likes coding. She’s definitely not, at this point in her life, limited by her name. I understand tastes are different though, and that our samples are completely different too Grin

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/03/2020 22:30

Since when has Ellen been a unisex name. Confused

Winifred (Freddie)
Charlotte (Charley)
Francesca (Frankie)
Georgina (Georgie)
Drew
Jaime
Leigh
Martha (Mattie)
Veronica (Ronnie)
Andrea Andi

Jossina · 03/03/2020 04:33
