Is this too much

After further debate we have finally decided on a name for DD2 due in in March.

Darcey.....DH would like to call her Darcey-Rose which is lovely but we had already decided on the middle name Jane after MIL. Her name wasn't due to have a hyphen as tbh I dont think people use them that much, they just use the 1st part.

I have suggested Darcey-Jane but DH likes Rose.

So do you think Darcey-Rose Jane Surname is too much?

Um, because you said this:

we had already decided on the middle name Jane after MIL. Her name wasn't due to have a hyphen as tbh I dont think people use them that much, they just use the 1st part.

She wasn't going to have a hyphen originally.
Your issue is that the whole name is too much of a mouthful.
The overwhelming response from everyone is 'Yes, with the hyphen it is, without the hyphen it's just three first names which is fine'

Darcey-Rose Jane is a mouthful. Heck, Darcey-Rose anything is a mouthful.

Darcey Rose Jane isn't because in everyday life she'll be Darcey which is lovely.

The hyphen is the issue not the number of names as these won't intrude on everyday use of the name.

That's why.

Darcey is a surname and a celebrity-inspired name. How many Darcey/Darcy/Darcies were there before the former ballerina and TV show star?
Rose is a colour as well as a flower.

If you like the names, go ahead but the opinion on here is not positive.
If you use the hyphen, the names will run into each other - a bit like Anne-Marie sounding like Ammary or Jean-Anne sounding like Ginanne.

Love all your names. Really don’t like hyphenated names so I would also say - don’t use the hyphen! Darcey Jane is my favourite.

Saltnpepperr · 28/02/2020 12:49

Sorry just saw your last comment about hyphens. I think if there’s a hyphen, people tend to say both names. I like just one name as a first name - that’s just my opinion. If you want to have two middle names without a hyphen, go for it. One of my children has two middle names and the other doesn’t.

Op
You do know that Mercedes is a name don’t you, it’s what the car was named after.
Darcey Busell uses her middle name I think. I’m almost sure her first name is something else.

emilybrontescorsett · 28/02/2020 12:54

Strangely enough she was born Marnie MERCEDES Darcey Pemberton Crittle.

Hereforthenamethreads · 28/02/2020 12:57

I think it is very pretty. Be careful of taking the opinions of others into account when namng your child. You will regret it. Give your child a name you love.

csmw · 28/02/2020 13:04

@emilybrontescorsett

No I didnt know, Mercedes and Chardonnay are just 2 names I constantly hear bellowed when I'm at my hospital appointments 😂

Wow well that makes DH choice sound rather short in comparison.

You’re asking about whether a name is a mouthful or not but many of us are saying that it’s not middle names that make a name a mouthful as they are rarely used. You even say earlier in this thread that your own middle names have “got lost” as they aren’t used.
6 middle names would be less of a mouthful day-to-day than a hyphenated first name!

You’ve answered your own question really with the “Darcey Busell” example- no one has any idea she has all those middle names as she just goes by 1 name day to day.

I would disagree that Darcey B’s full name “makes DH choice sound rather short by comparison” as she only goes by one name (Darcey). The fact she has loads of middle names is sort of irrelevant as no one knows or uses them. Whereas Darcey-Rose would be more of a mouthful than just Darcey

copperoliver · 28/02/2020 13:35

Personally I just like Darcey then I would just have Rose and Jane as middle names.
I really don't like hyphenated names. X

Quizeerascal · 28/02/2020 13:39

Is it too much of a curveball to say I love Aubrey Jane with or without a hyphen Grin

Quizeerascal · 28/02/2020 13:40

They're all lovely names though and Darcey will probably decide for herself whether she uses the-Rose or not

csmw · 28/02/2020 13:48

@hereforthenamethreads

Thank you, no definitely. My husband and I will ultimately be the ones deciding

csmw · 28/02/2020 13:50

@Quizeerascal Haha we lived that name too but our entire families hated it, some of the comments were quite awful 🙈

Aubrey-Jane makes me think of Aubergine.

kenandbarbie · 28/02/2020 14:19

Darcey as a stand alone name is far nicer than Darcey hyphenated with anything else.

This^

With Jane for a middle name.

Paddington68 · 28/02/2020 15:56

Can you imagine yourself shouting it across a crowded park or beach?
If you can manage it, I'm sure everyone else will think it's lovely.
