My husband and I are Welsh (South Wales) and live in the east of England.

We are keen to use Welsh names...we are not concerned about making a Welsh name anglicised.
What are your favourite girl/boy names? I need a bit of inspiration.

Thank you all x

I love Mabli for a girl

Mamabear88 · 19/02/2020 09:53

I absolutely love Carys / Cerys. It sounds so pretty to me. My friend just names her daughter Ffion which is also really lovely.

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/02/2020 09:56

@cinders15

Justine is the feminine version of Justin and it's English.

Rueben is a Hebrew name.

I know someone who’s middle name is ‘Hedd’ meaning peace.

ConsiderTheCentre · 19/02/2020 10:05

It actually makes a much nicer sound than it looks written down!

Nia and Elis are fine.

Most of the names get mangled.
Hâf will be Haff
Efa with be Effuh, which is too close to heifer.
Eirianwen will be Erry-Anwen
Llinos will be Clee-nose etc.

Choose carefully.

PixieN · 19/02/2020 10:32

I really like Anwen, Elin and Seren. We were married by a Delyth so I quite like that one too.

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2020 10:39

Hedd is lovely but will be too difficult. It will be Heth (th as in thanks), or Hed.

Delyth is terribly dated. 1950s/1960s name. Not too hard to live with though and quite nice.

HexagonsHecateAndHecuba · 19/02/2020 10:40

most of the names get mangled.....choose carefully

That properly pisses me off. Why should Welsh people have to chose a Welsh name carefully, just because some other people chose not to pronounce a name properly or think it's funny to mispronounce?

Plenty of people get their heads round Greek, French, Spanish, Polish, Russian names etc, so why not Welsh?

OwlBeThere · 19/02/2020 11:36

@HexagonsHecateAndHecuba I agree, and I have to say most people manage my kids names fine once they have it explained to them. The only thing I purposely avoided was ‘ll’ sounds as so many people struggle with it. My Hâf is at an English university and it’s fine.

Mumma4262 · 19/02/2020 12:05

I love Ellis, I have an Ellis.

Cerys is gorgeous for a girl.

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2020 12:10

Do you think I am saying it for nothing?

Dale Carnegie “Remember that a person's name is to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language”.

Your name mangled is horrible.

Little Geraint will have a lifetime of being called Grant, Guh-rant, G'r-aint, Jeraint etc and every one of them will jar.

People can be very rude.

It is not you who has to live with the name.

Milicentbystander72 · 19/02/2020 12:17

Mali
Catrin
Rhian
Nia
Gwenno, Gwennan (Gwen)

Huw
Idris
Emerys
Gryffydd (Gryff)
Alyn

Lojoh · 19/02/2020 12:19

Caradoc - always loved that name.

SoupDragon · 19/02/2020 12:22

Anyone choosing a name in a different language to the one used where they are living needs to chose a name carefully. They need to balance pronunciation issues with how much constant corrections would bother them. They also need to consider whether it sounds like something rude or amusing in the local language.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 19/02/2020 12:28

My family is Welsh, I loved Myfanwy, Carys, Nia, Nerys, Sian and Seren.

BUT living in England a long way from Wales, in an area with a large Eastern European population we decided that welsh names would end up mangled as has already been said. Plus hubby and his family found spelling them strangely difficult.

so sadly didn't use them at all. I do look back though and wish I had used a couple of them as middle names.

missmouse101 · 19/02/2020 12:30

Teleri, Lowri, Mali and Celyn for a girl
